Whatever deep the emotional sensations at the Russian folklore may be, they are certainly emphasized by a magnificent interior of the Palace. It is a fine specimen of architecture of the 19th century built to the design of the famous German born Russian architect Andrey Stakenshneider for Emperor Nikolay I't son, Grand Duke Nikolay. Due to this fact, the current name of the former Grand Duke's residence is the Nikolayevsky Palace.

The Palace-is unique not only by its architectural design. It remarkably combines the memories of more than century's history of the city existence. The walls of the Palace remember daily life events of the Grand Duke's family as well as vigorous activities of the new political class representatives roused by the communists to rule the New State.

Public Transportation in St. Petersburg

The network of public transportation in St. Petersburg is quite extensive. The resources of public transportation are quite over-stretched, and most public transport is not particularly user-friendly. Nonetheless, the metro is a very reliable and cost-effective way of medium and long-distance transportation. It is also good for journeys within the downtown area. For the shorter trips you are more likely to use trams, buses and trolleybuses, or taxis (if you have money to spare). If you come on business or with a large family, you might also consider renting a car or a van (with driver or without).

Fare to ground municipal transport is 21 rubles, 25 rubles on the subway. The fares on commercial routes range from 25 to 30 rubles

Metro Although not as extensive or extravagant as Moscow's Metro, the St. Petersburg Metro leaves most other metro systems in the dust, and is a very popular form of transport in the

Northern Capital. The system's four lines and more than 50 stations are open from about 05.30 to 01.00, and are relatively cheap.

Entering Metro

Unless you buy a monthly pass (called kartochka or proyezdnoy) you pay by tokens, which can be purchased at special counters or booths located at every station. These booths also sell monthly metro passes and passes which allow you to use all forms of public transport (yediny or yedinaya kartochka). 22-24 January 2014

Trams

St. Petersburg has a relatively extensive system of trams, which are relatively inexpensive. Tram stops have a sign with the letter "T" which hangs over the road. Most trams run in the

Northern Capital from about 06.00 to 01.00.

A ll trams have conductors on board. You should pay in cash to a conductor, unless you have a monthly pass. Conductors normally wear special uniform (and/or red arm bands). They check whether everybody has paid and sell tickets to those who need them. Don't be surprised to see an occasional kontrolyor - inspector, who might ask you to show your ticket.

Buses

St. Petersburg has a relatively extensive and growing system of buses. Commercial buses, which are somewhat more expensive but nevertheless relatively inexpensive and less-

crowded are distinguished by the letter "K". Bus stops have yellow signs with dark lettering which are distinguished by the letter "A". Regular buses now have conductors on board. You should pay for your ticket in cash to a conductor or show him/her your monthly pass.

Trolleybuses

St. Petersburg has a relatively extensive system of trolley buses, which are relatively

inexpensive. Most trolley bus stops have yellow signs with dark lettering which are distinguished by a "T". Trolley buses generally run from 06.00 to 01.00. Show your monthly pass to a conductor otherwise pay in cash for your ticket.

Marshrutka

A marshrutka is a private minibus running a fixed route through St. Petersburg and its suburbs. Marshrutkas are fast and cheap, although confusing for first-time users. They also often provide the only feasible transport to the further reaches of the city. Fares on marshrutki are slightly more expensive than on public buses, but are always less than a dollar within the city, and only slightly more for suburban trips. In St. Petersburg, although

not everywhere in Russia, it is the norm to pay as soon as you have sat down, passing your money to the driver through the passengers in front of you. For this reason, it is best to avoid the seats at the very front of the cabin, otherwise you will find yourself passing money backwards and forwards throughout your journey. Unless you are traveling to the end of the route, you will need to request the driver to stop at your destination. If you have the language skills, then explain exactly where you wish to be dropped. Otherwise, just shout 22-24 January 2014

PARTICIPANT MANUAL

"as-to-na-VI-tye, pa-ZHA-lu-i-sta" - "stop, please!" - when your stop comes into view.

Taxis

There is an abundance of taxis in the Northern Capital, especially along the major

thoroughfares. You can flag a taxi, which is usually distinguished by a checkered bar on the

rooftop, but you'll likely have to negotiate a fare.

How to Phone in St. Petersburg

International calls from St. Petersburg. Dial 8, wait for a tone, then dial 10 (international access), then the code of the country, the area and the phone number. The price of a phonecall to Europe will be around 20 roubles ($0.7) a minute in the daytime. In the nighttime and weekends the tariffs are 30 to 50% less.

St. Petersburg - Russia. If you're phoning from St. Petersburg to some other Russian city, dial 8, wait for a tone, then dial the code of the city (e.g. Moscow - 495, Novgorod - 8162), and then the local city number you need. The price of a phonecall to Moscow will be around 4 roubles a minute ($0.15).

Inside St. Petersburg. If you're in St.Petersburg and calling inside St.Petersburg, you should dial the 7- digit number without any codes. The local phonecalls are free.

Calling Russian mobile phones. Russian mobiles have either direct (cities they were registred in) numbers, or indirect numbers. The indirect number is of this form: 8 tone *** *******. If you use mobile phone, you can dial +7 instead of 8.

Public phones. The "phone" in Russian is "telefon". The public phones are called "taxofon" ("таксофон"). The public phones in St. Petersburg work with chip cards, some pay phones in the metro work with coins. There are two systems of public phones in St. Petersburg, each requires a different type of card.

Church of the Savior-on-the-Blood (duration 30 min, recommended with city tour).

One of the most beautiful cathedrals of Saint Petersburg, the Savior-on-the-Blood was erected on the place where Russian Emperor Alexander II was murdered on the 1st of March, 1881. According to the legend, the archimandrite saw in his dream the Virgin who showed him what the cathedral should look like. The cathedral was constructed in the style of the 16th-17th century Russian architecture and has a lot in common with the Church of St. Basil the Blessed that stands on the Red Square in Moscow. The Cathedral of Our Savior on the Spilled Blood stands out for its complicated and picturesque outline, as well as rich and multicolored decoration on the background of the austere Petersburg church architecture. The rich mosaics that cover the walls of the cathedral both inside and outside are of a great value. The total area of the mosaic is impressive 7,050 square meters. The height of the tallest dome is 81 meters.

The Mikhailovsky Castle (duration 1,5 hour)

The Mikhailovsky Castle was constructed in 1797-1801 by order of Paul I. The Mikhailovsky Castle was built to the south of the Summer Garden and replaced the small wooden palace of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna. From four sides the castle was surrounded by waters of the Moika River, the River and two canals, which were specially dug. To leave the palace and depart for the city, one should use the hanging bridges, which were raised in the nights. The new royal residence, that was isolated from the city and looked like a fortified medieval castle encompassed with a deep moat, stroke fear into the hearts of people. The Mikhailovsky Castle was designed by architects Vincenzo Brenna and Vasily Bajenov. The castle looks different from each side, as the architects used the motifs of various architectural styles - French Classicism, Italian Renaissance and even Gothic. Emperor Paul I spent only 40 nights in the castle. On the night of the 12th of March 1801 he was murdered in his own bedroom by a group of officers. The plot was inspired by Paul's son Alexander. After the death of the Emperor the castle was abandoned as none of the members of the royal family dared to live in such an ominous house. In 1819 the castle was given over to the Main Engineering School that bestowed the castle second name - the Engineers' Castle. Among the most well-known graduates of the school one can remember the famous Russian writer Fyodor Dostoevsky.
