Parlo di punto fermo perché, in un momento come l’attuale, do - 2 ve da anni il mondo musicale e dello spettacolo sembra sempre più ripiegarsi fra le pieghe dello star system, questo festival risponde credendo fermamente ai progetti e alla qualità. Personalmente ho sempre creduto che un’autentica politica cul- turale non possa prescindere dalla qualità, se occorre anche a costo di non badare ai meri numeri. In realtà, Vicenza Jazz ha senza dubbio le spalle forti da potersi permettere il lusso di rad- doppiare i progetti speciali e le produzioni, e il programma 2012 lo mostra in maniera del tutto evidente. Questa edizione mi sembra anche, infine, quasi una piccola con- clusione dell’arco dell’ultimo quadriennio, da quando cioè ci siamo ritrovati con Riccardo Brazzale, Luca Trivellato e Luca Ber - ton per programmare un ciclo che potesse ridare linfa e vitalità a una grande idea nata tanti anni prima; linfa e vitalità che oggi - grazie anche all’apporto del gruppo Aim e di Fondazione Cari - ve rona - siamo felici di poter dire di aver dato. -

Art and Technology Meet in St. Petersburg: An Interview with Five Female Artists of the CYLAND Media Art Laboratory DARIA CHERKASHINA CYLAND Media Art Lab St. Petersburg Abstract: New media art is an extensive concept, which unites a number of different art forms made with the help of media technologies such as digital art, computer graphics, com- puter animation, virtual art, internet art, interactive art, video games, computer robotics, 3D printing, cyborg art and art as biotechnology. Media art has existed in Russia for more than twenty years and female artists were the core developers of media art in St. Petersburg. Tak- ing the CYLAND media art laboratory as its vantage point, this interview with five artists aims to give an account of the history, key works, exhibitions and ideas in St. Petersburg media art. The artists participating in this interview are Anna Frants, Ludmila Belova, Alexandra Dementieva, Victoria Ilyushkina and Elena Gubanova. They all have exhibited their works extensively both in Russia and abroad and contributed significantly to the devel- opment of Russian media art and CYLAND’s development as one of the leading media art institutions in Russia. It focuses on four of the most representative political youth groups present in the city of St. Petersburg – the Young Guard, the National Bolsheviks, the Movement Against Illegal Immigration (DPNI), and Oborona [Defence] – and describes their conceptualisation of post-Soviet Russianness, as captured through an analysis of their lyrics. The main contribution of this empirical study is the detection of convergences and divergences with regard to the national identity issue characterising youth organisations that position themselves diff erently in the Russian political spectrum. Sergei Borisov. Studio 50А 19 November – 6 December “Borisov’s works need no commentary. They could be expanded to other dimensions with poetry, music and paintings”. Viktor Erofeev. November 18, RuArts Gallery of contemporary art with the support of Harper’s Bazaar Art, Mondoro and Prime concierge service will present Sergei Borisov’s personal exhibition, dedicated to the presentation of his album Studio 50A. Borisov is one of the most famous and honored Russian photographers. Project Studio 50A gathers photographs that show the unique place of Sergei Borisov on the Russian art scene. The exhibition includes both classic and new works. In 1979 Sergei Borisov settled at Znamenka, since 1983 known as Studio 50A. There he worked on an illustration assignment for “Le Monde” article on Soviet rock music that recently became a subject in the West. As the piece’s central figure Borisov suggested ‘the tsar of Russian rock’ Boris Grebenshchikov and his band Aquarium with their brand new album “Radio Africa”. That’s how the journey to the world of Leningrad underground music started. As new music and art forms gained momentum, Studio 50 A quickly became a communication centre for artists between Moscow and Leningrad, as well as a stepping stone for modern culture and art movement. Borisov showed another side of Soviet life with his photo stories starring underground artists. The first Soviet rock diva Zhanna Aguzarova, World Champions art group, Roman Viktyuk, Viktor Tsoi, Vladislav Monroe, Georgy Guryanov and Timur Novikov – all were natural and spontaneous during photoshoots and performance shows, climbing city monuments and undressing in the studio as well as on the street. -

Heroes of Russian Rock: Friends, Lovers, and Husbands By Stingray Despite what American society tried to teach me growing up - the wedding costumes, kitchen sets, and indelible Disney movies - I have always believed that it is better to be one of the guys than be with one of the guys. I have my mother to thank. In Russia from early 1984 to 1996, she was just one of the dudes. No distinctions, no divides. Coming from Los Angeles, a land of cookie-cutter stereotypes and assumed gender norms, she loved emulating these gorgeous, witty, and artistic men – singing their harmonies instead of cooking them dinner and breaking bottles instead of hearts. The atmosphere was euphoric, the company divine. Too many people assume that being the only girl in a guy’s group overwhelms a woman with too much masculinity. Quite the contrary, Joanna Stingray never looked or felt more feminine than when she was sharing song lyrics and dirty jokes between them. She had so much more freedom to feel soft and gentle; gone were the stiff walls she’d built to hide her emotions and protect herself. None of the guys tried to impress her or put on pretenses, so she didn’t have to either. It was something that was pure and in the moment, never restrained and never unsatisfactory. As she always tells it, men are at their best when they’re in no position to disappoint you. Being able to collaborate creatively with these guys fostered a relationship between my mom and these Russians where the interactions were not guided by confusion or subtlety that permeates societal expectations. -

Dott.ssa Alessia Cavallaro Laureando Marta Arzuffi Matricola 865800 Anno Accademico 2017 / 2018 Sommario La presente ricerca si pone come obiettivo la ricostruzione di una linea temporale, attraverso l’analisi dei vari eventi che portarono alla nascita della video arte, un linguaggio artistico moderno basato sulla creazione e riproduzione di immagini animate mediante tecnologia video, in Russia. Il primo capitolo intende ricostruire la suddetta linea temporale attraverso l’analisi degli aspetti storici, politici e culturali della Russia e presenta i protagonisti di questa evoluzione, in primis Andrei Monastyrski, seguito da Sabine Haensgen e il gruppo Azioni Collettive, Boris Yukhananov, Bulat Galeev fondatore dell'istituto "Prometheus" di Kazan, Timur Novikov e molti altri. Nelle due sezioni successive vengono presentate le figure di Vladislav Mamyshev Monroe e il collettivo Aes+F, composto da Tatiana Arzamasova, Lev Evzovich, Evgeny Svytatsky nel 1987 e completato dall’arrivo di Vladimir Fridkes nel 1995. Due casi particolari che conquistano l’attenzione internazionale. Ne è conseguita una presentazione quanto più possibile completa della storia della video arte in Russia, in lingua italiana, corredata dalla presentazione dei due casi precedentemente citati al fine di arricchire maggiormente il panorama presentato nel primo capitolo. i ii Abstract The present research aims to reconstruct a timeline, through the analysis of the various events that led to the birth of video art, a modern artistic language based on the creation and reproduction of animated images using video technology, in Russia. -
