RESEARCH ACTIVITY Field Mass customization with a special focus on housing site planning The goal is to develop computer aided design and production systems to enable a new housing provision process leading to increased customization and customer satifaction. The idea is to develop rule-based design systems that can generate solutions within a given language based on household profiles. The design system can be coded into a computer program for enabling the interactive exploration of solutions. It may be also coordinated with an automated production system for producing affordable homes. This paradigm can be applied to other design fields. Recent research has focused on its application to urban design, in order to conceive flexible plans, that is, plans that permit the generation of design alternatives in response to variations in the context.

Projects Sustainable responsive architecture: embedding intelligent Submitted in Dec. behavior in buildings 2009 The proposed research intends to enquire into how new technologies can affect the building process, by making it more efficient, enabling customization, and allowing for the emergence of performative strategies that take site and user conditions into account. It follows two concurrent research approaches. One explores passive, static solutions and the other kinetic ones. The first is concerned with the development of a sustainable building system, that is, a system that draws on local resources and requires low energy consumption for its fabrication, for the construction of its buildings, and for their use. The second is concerned with the development of responsive, kinetic mechanisms for adjusting the building to internal and external demands. At the end, the result of both approaches should be merged into a single solution that incorporates both static and kinetic principles. Research will be based on a set of case studies concerned with the development of kinetic structures for small exhibition pavilions with decreasing levels of abstraction, from small scale models to real scale mockups. The lessons learnt from both approaches will be used as a basis for setting guidelines for the design of sustainable reconfigurable housing. The installations will be built on the university campus and then demounted and mounted at Óbidos Tech Park for display. Future work will be concerned with the design of a housing prototype. Funding: FCT, Portugal. Team: José P. Duarte (coordinator), Duarte C. de Melo, Isa C. Neves, Gonçalo C. Henriques (FA/TU Lisbon); João Ramôa Correia, Vasco Granadeiro, Luis Marques (IST/UTL); Amorim Faria, Joaquim Fonseca, Manuel R. Barbosa, Joaquim G. Mendes, António C. de Brito (FE/UPorto). Consultants: William J. Mitchell, Kent Larson, Federico Casalegno (Design Lab/MIT); Vitor Leal, José Soeiro Ferreira, Augusto de Sousa (INESC Porto). Industry Participant: Filipe Montargil (Obidos Tech Park). Customized Ceramics: towards a model for the mass Submitted Nov 09 customization of home ceramic products The goal is to explore the possibility of developing mass customized products with increased added-value. Mass customization is a new paradigm that contains elements of both craft and mass production. The project takes as its case study the home ceramics industry and, more specifically, the company SPAL Porcelain S.A. With craft production, the ceramics industry provided uniquely designed tableware and dinnerware to a restricted set of wealthy clients. With mass production, it was possible to provide such goods at a lower cost to a wider sector of the population, but at the expense of customization. Mass customization might enable the industry to offer customized designs to a wider sector of the population. This requires: (1) a design system that permits clients to generate their own home ceramics products online; (2) a production system to materialize the customized designs according to some mechanism of production; and (3) an organizational system to enable the factory to operate in this scenario effectively. Transversal to these three systems is the use of information and communication systems and technology (ICT). The project will address the design, technical, and organization problems involved to create the prototype of the intended system at SPAL and then derive guidelines for implementing similar strategies in other industries.

Casaflex: improving the architecture of residencial Submitted Oct 09 neighborhoods The goal is to improve the quality of housing targeted at low and middle income households using design and building systems supported by the new technologies and based on ecological principles. The idea is to test in practice previous research results to make high quality customized housing affordable to people who lack the resources to hire an architect. The project foresees the development of design and building systems adapted to the Mexicam reality and of a computer system to explore solutions and generate information for production. The combined use of such systems will enable quality control and greater efficiency in design and constuction. Mass customization will permit to provide for more diverse urban environments, thereby avoiding the monotony associated with large scale construction. Funding: UTL, Portugal; Ucalli, México. Team: Portugal: José P. Duarte (coordinator), research assistant. México: Maria Elosua, research assistant. Digital Alberti: Tradition and innovation in architectural theory Mar 10 – Feb 13 and practice in Portugal The goal of the project is to use the opportunity provided by M. Kruger and A. E. Santo’s translation of Alberti's treatise from Latin into Portuguese (forthcoming 2009) to trace the influence of this treatise on Portuguese classical architecture, by combining cultural and computational approaches. The idea is to use grammars to decode the treatise, originally published in 1485 without illustrations, and map the transformations between the treatise and the buildings designed and built in the , using a particular building type as a case study. This will be accomplish by converting the algorithms described in the book into shape and description grammars, and then into computer programs, and finally into physical and virtual reality models. The first are constrained by prefab requirements, while the second is limited by the need to minimize energy consumption in the lifecycle of buildings. Research will be concerned with the development of a low energy consumption building system but also with the methodology for creating such systems for particular contexts. Advisee: Vasco Granadeiro Role: Advisor.Co- advisor: João Ramôa Correia, TU Lisbon IST Program: MIT-Portugal Program, Sustainable Energy Systems PhD Program Situation: coursework completed in July 2009, thesis in progress Funding: Ph.D. Scholarship from FCT, Portugal The life-cycle of graphic objects: the poster as a cultural resource Oct. 11 Research will focus on posters as graphical objects presented in urban environments and on their decontextualization and use after fulfilling their divulging function. Research will concentrate on defining the concept of poster, identifying its function, and characterizing its relation with pedestrians as a basis for creating the project of a virtual museum for such type of objects. The museum will include a system for classifying such objects both in terms of content and form. The idea is that posters will loose its primary function of conveying messages to become objects of aesthetic fruition. Advisee: Sílvia Maria Rala dos Santos Role: Co- advisor. “Reflection in Action” as an Optimizing Factor of Time and Jun. 10 Quality Dimensions in Product Design Processes

48 The product design process has ineficiencies that lead to a bad performance of design products. The study elects as significant dimensions in the product design process time and product quality management. Using Donald Schon’s “reflection in action” theory, it proposes to develop a working design methodology that optimizes these two dimensions, hoping to obtain as final result an effective increase in quality and a decrease in time. Research is based on ethnographic studies undertaken through a series ox experiments with samples of three kinds of subjects: 1st year design students, 5th year design students, and professional designers.
