Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 Ricardo Agarez | Abstract Abstract This thesis looks at the contribution of real and constructed local traditions to modern building practices and discourses in a specific region, focusing on the case of Algarve, southern Portugal, between 1925 and 1965. By shifting the main research focus from the centre to the region, and by placing a strong emphasis on fieldwork and previously overlooked sources (the archives of provincial bodies, municipalities and architects), the thesis scrutinises canonical accounts of the interaction of regionalism with modernism. It examines how architectural ‘regionalism’, often discussed at a central level through the work of acknowledged metropolitan architects, was interpreted by local practices in everyday building activity. Was there a real local concern with vernacular traditions, or was this essentially a construct of educated metropolitan circles, both at the time and retrospectively? Circuits and agents of influence and dissemination are traced, the careers of locally relevant designers come to light, and a more comprehensive view of architectural production is offered. Departing from conventional narratives that present pre-war regionalism in Portugal as a stereotype-driven, one-way central construct, the creation of a regional built identity for Algarve emerges here as the result of combined local, regional and central agencies, mediated both through concrete building practice and discourses outside architecture. Post-war regionalism appears as more than a sophisticated re-appropriation of vernacular features by cultured architects to overcome the shortcomings of both modernist orthodoxy and official stylistic conservatism: the thesis shows how Algarve’s traditional features allowed modernism to be pragmatically restyled as locally sensitive and keep its fundamentals unquestioned; and the architects’ authority to be reasserted where non-architects dominated. Tradition became the key to architecture’s future. Regionalism, a consistent undercurrent of twentieth-century architecture, resurfaced and was morphed by modernism, with mutual benefit.     A REVOLTA MENDES NORTON DE 1935 LUÍS MIGUEL PULIDO GARCIA CARDOSO DE MENEZES INTRODUÇÃO Manuel Peixoto Martins Mendes Norton (1875-1967), natural de Via- na do Castelo, teve um percurso militar - profissional brilhante, com provas dadas. Foi o caso da organização do serviço de socorro ao nau- frágio do paquete inglês “Veronese” (1913); o grande impulso que deu à obra de farolagem, deixando a costa portuguesa de chamar-se a “costa negra” (1918-1929); a participação e colaboração na revolta monárquica de Monsanto (1919) e na revolução de 28-5-1926; a organização da Con- ferência Internacional de Farolagem em Lisboa (1930), etc. etc. Activista político empenhado, foi o principal chefe operacional das revoltas de 20-5-1935 e da revolta «Mendes Norton» de 10-9-1935, esta última considerada por Medeiros Ferreira, uma das mais importantes revoltas militares entre 1933-1961, que ousaram agitar o Estado Novo. Foi também, uma das figuras de maior relevo do governo dos ge- nerais António Óscar Fragoso Carmona-Sinel Cordes (de 9-7-1926 a 18-4-1928), e a este propósito George Guyomard, considerava Mendes Norton, então Capitão de Fragata, um dos quatro homens que deti- nham o verdadeiro poder político em Portugal. Até 1934, Mendes Norton está com o regime, tendo aliás sido amiúde nomeado para diversos cargos e comissões de serviço; a partir de então e à medida que se acentua o autoritarismo politico, demarca-se da situação e revela-se um opositor feroz ao regime de Oliveira Salazar, tendo sido consequentemente exonerado dos inúmeros cargos e comissões que deti- nha, bem como lhe foi negado o requerimento em que pedia para fazer o tirocínio para o posto de Contra-Almirante.

Queiroz Art Historians - Portugal [email protected] ABSTRACT The purpose of this paper is to present a synoptic view of the evolution of Portuguese architectural ceramics, particularly focusing on the 19th and 20th centuries, because the origins of current uses of ceramic tiles in Portuguese architecture stem from those periods. Thus, the paper begins with the background to the use of ceramics in Portuguese architecture, between the 16th and 18th centuries, through some duly illustrated paradigmatic examples. The study then presents examples of the 19th century, in a period of transition between art and industry, demonstrating the diversity and excellence of Portuguese production, as well as the identifying character of the phenomenon of façade tiling in the Portuguese urban image. The study concludes with a section on the causes of the decline in the use of ceramic materials in Portuguese architecture in the first decades of the 20th century, and the appropriation of ceramic tiling by the popular classes in their vernacular architecture. Parallel to this, the paper shows how the most erudite route for ceramic tilings lay in author works, often in public buildings and at the service of the nationalistic propaganda of the dictatorial regime. This section also explains how an industrial upgrading occurred that led to the closing of many of the most important Portuguese industrial units of ceramic products for architecture, foreshadowing the current ceramic tiling scenario in Portugal. 1 CASTELLÓN (SPAIN) 1. Formal aspects and initial costs are the primary design concerns, using current long lifespan construction, with little consideration given to future maintenance or future needs. This situation represents a tremendous waste of resources (present and future), and there is a growing perception of the need to address these issues. One of the possible change trends lies in a revision of current design practices to increase building adaptability accommodating current construction logics, but there is a lack of examples bridging the gap between current (international) theory and (Portuguese) practice. The Lisbon EXPO 98 World Exhibition was the largest example of urban regeneration in Portugal, in which several buildings addressed the need for adaptability according to different design logics, since their original uses would cease or change upon the exhibition’s closure. This paper will present the case study of an EXPO 98 building, Portugal’s Pavilion by Pritzker Winner Architect Álvaro Siza, as an example of the use of design strategies to provide adaptability (at structural, spatial and material levels) within an institutional building, using current Portuguese construction possibilities.

It is not the implied territorial divide that interest Frampton. At issue is how architecture could or should define the periphery in contrast to the hegemonic architecture unfolding in the centre. Frampton’s take is centred on the ways that technological apparatus, under the auspices of capitalism, transform the cities one- dimensionally. From China to wherever else that capital today finds a home for fast accumulation, we witness “the mediagenic impact of spectacular form which is,” Frampton observes, “as much due to the capacity of ‘superstar architects’ to come up with sensational, novel images as to their organizational competence and technical abilities.”[i] For a better understanding of Frampton’s position we need to give attention to the change in the title of his text. Since the rise of postmodernism, Frampton has constantly searched for alternative(s) in the work of architects who sidetrack the post-sixties turn to historical eclecticism and the drive for formal autonomy, to mention two dominant tendencies of the time. It was argued that the specificity of the Portuguese system was, on the one hand, a late but intense urbanization process, exerting strong constructive pressures on cities (especially since the 1960s), combined with an insufficient supply of housing, both private and public. On the other hand, a late and fragile development of a welfare state, in counter cycle, in the context of a general questioning of its sustainability.
