5211 SCHLUTER ROAD MONONA, WI 53716-2598 CITY HALL (608) 222-2525 FAX (608) 222-9225 http://www.mymonona.com For Immediate Release Contact: Bryan Gadow, City Administrator [email protected] Monona Reaches Agreement with St. Norbert Abbey to Purchase nearly 10 Acres on Lake Monona The City of Monona has reached agreement with St. Norbert Abbey of De Pere to purchase the historic San Damiano property at 4123 Monona Drive. The purchase agreement, in the amount of $8.6M, was unanimously approved by the Monona City Council at the September 8th meeting. Pending approval by the Vatican as required by canon law, if all goes as planned Monona will take ownership of the property in June 2021. “We are very excited to have reached an agreement with St. Norbert Abbey to purchase the San Damiano property. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Monona to significantly increase public access to the lakefront and waters of Lake Monona in addition to increasing our public open space. While Monona enjoys more than four miles of shoreline, over eighty percent of Monona residents would not have lake access were it not for our smaller parks and launches. It will be a tremendous asset for the City,” said Monona Mayor Mary O’Connor. At just under ten acres, San Damiano includes over 1,000 feet of frontage on Lake Monona. Much of the grounds are wooded. The house and property are part of the original farm developed by Allis-Chalmers heir Frank Allis in the 1880’s. The land, as is true of much of the area, was originally inhabited by Native Americans, including ancestors of the Ho- Chunk Nation. -

MONTE CASSINO, METTEN, AND MINNESOTA' In following the development of civilization through early flLopean history it is necessary to dwell at some length upon the Rule of St. Benedict. This rule, better described as a wn- stitution for the government of men living under certaih condi- tions, is known as one of the great governmetltal documents of history. It came into being during the critical years when the old Roman Empire of the West was breaking down and western Europe was coming under the rule of those vigorous but untaught tribesmen from the North known as the Teutons. Among the Romans at that time there was an intense interest & the Christian religion. For some time hundreds, and even thousands, of people, persons of wealth, of prominence, and of social position, as well as persons of the humbler walks of life, had renounced the affairs of the world and had turned their thoughts exclusively to the attainment of eternal salva- tion, which they hoped more certainly to deserve through a life of self-denial. This spirit of 2-If -denial is one which all ages have lauded. Asceticism had begun in the East and was already a century old when the West took it up.. Even in the East the thought had arisen that this practice required some organization and should be made of some service to society. It remained, however, for the ,West to realize this thought in its fullest form This was the work of Benedict of Nut&, a Roman, to whom suc- ceeding centuries have reverently paid their respect under the title of St. -

Entrance into Novitiate (Titus and Dunstan) January 14, 2018 Abbot Mark Cooper, O.S.B. Our readings at Mass just a few hours ago, as Fr. Anselm has suggested, could hardly be more appropriate for two men taking a further step to search out the Lord, to approach more closely this God who calls us to Himself, and to His way. The gospel of this Sunday relates the story of two of John the Baptist’s disciples hearing the dramatic words, “Behold the Lamb of God,” spoken by the Baptist, upon his seeing Jesus. Immediately John’s two disciples followed after Jesus to learn more, to see and hear more, prepared to accept and follow the one for whom John had come to prepare the way. Michael and Douglas, we hope that you have in different ways and circumstances already found the Lamb of God, Christ, in this community. As you enter novitiate, may you move with greater determination, and even stronger purpose to follow Him. We know from the Rule of Benedict that the would-be monastic disciple is first instructed to “Listen with the ear of your heart.” And so it was in our Old Testament reading at Mass this morning, when Eli finally understood that it was the Lord who was calling the youth Samuel. Eli instructed Samuel: “If you are called, reply, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’ ” It is to listen, in the fullest sense of that word, that we come to the cloister. We are meant to set aside everything at the entrance to the monastery, our self-will, our plans of self-determination, our old ways, our improper ways of loving and choosing. -

If you are discerning a vocation and wish to ask something about becoming a nun here at Howton Grove Priory that is not on the list, or are not clear about our answer, please ask the Novice Mistress. The directives given in 'Cor Orans', published in May , take immediate effect, so we shall be revising what we say here in the light of its requirements. Please note in particular that the formation period now required is nine years and may be extended to twelve. If you want help with something like a school project, or more general information, please use the general contact form. As we said on the previous page, for a Benedictine, a vocation is always to a specific community. What are the requirements for becoming a nun? Champagnat INTRODUCTION Dear Brothers, In presenting our Formation Guide to you, my thoughts go first of all to the many Brothers who have contributed directly to this work. My sincere thanks to them in the name of the Institute for this service they have rendered us. What a great distance has been covered since the General Council, in 1982, nominated a commission to prepare a Formation Guide to submit to the 18th General Chapter. The General Council, in June 1986, published a text «ad experimentum». Brother Charles Howard in introducing this commented: «It is now incumbent on all of us to give it life by implementing its directives in all our Provinces and Districts and in each of our personal lives.» The text, finalized during the 19th General Chapter, received the approval of that Chapter on 23rd October 1993. With this appro- bation the Formation Guide became, from that moment, part of our «Proper Law» (cf. Proper Law and the Formation Guide, in the Acts of the 19th General Chapter). Our Guide aims at providing the basic ideas and necessary re- sources, for our aspirants, enabling them to become «men capa- ble of vowing their entire lives to God in an apostolic Marist community» (C 95), and for the Brothers, that they may «grow towards adulthood in Christ» (C 110). -

Yet, there are resources within the Buddhist canon that people can draw from to justify violence in defense of the religion and of a Buddhist-based polity. When those resources are exploited in the context of particular Theravada¯ Buddhist practices and the history of Buddhism and Buddhist identity in Burma from ancient times through its colonial and contemporary periods, it perpetuates an ongoing tragedy that is less about religion than about ethno-nationalism. Keywords: nationalism; Buddhism; Theravada;¯ non-violence; asceticism; polytheism; Burma; Myanmar What accounts for a non-violent religion’s turn to nationalist violence? This question is prompted by persistent and shocking genocidal violence by Buddhist groups in Myanmar (Burma) against minority Muslim Rohingya over the past decade. In the West, the virulence with which religion and nationalism converge is associated primarily with the fervor of Abrahamic religions, which only heightens the incongruence of Buddhism’s teachings of and reputation for non-violence with grotesque uses of force in its name. I argue that Buddhist nationalist1 violence in Myanmar should be both more and less surprising than it is, and address two major elements of Buddhist philosophy at the root of this incongruity: non-violence and asceticism. -

Thomas Merton's life was one of lived paradoxes: he wrote exten sively, yet desired the life of silence; wanted to travel, yet intensely desired solitude and the life of a hermit; affected millions of Catholic, Protestant and Jewish consciences during the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Move ment and the testing and use of atomic weaponry, yet seldom stepped outside the monastery. He vowed obedience to his abbots, yet frequently challenged their authority; fell in love with and visited a young nurse in Louisville, yet desired a monastic life; possessed tremendous independ ence, while he submitted himself to the discipline of the strictest religious order in the Roman Catholic Church.
