5211 SCHLUTER ROAD MONONA, WI 53716-2598 CITY HALL (608) 222-2525 FAX (608) 222-9225 http://www.mymonona.com For Immediate Release Contact: Bryan Gadow, City Administrator [email protected] Monona Reaches Agreement with St. Norbert Abbey to Purchase nearly 10 Acres on Lake Monona The City of Monona has reached agreement with St. Norbert Abbey of De Pere to purchase the historic San Damiano property at 4123 Monona Drive. The purchase agreement, in the amount of $8.6M, was unanimously approved by the Monona City Council at the September 8th meeting. Pending approval by the Vatican as required by canon law, if all goes as planned Monona will take ownership of the property in June 2021. “We are very excited to have reached an agreement with St. Norbert Abbey to purchase the San Damiano property. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Monona to significantly increase public access to the lakefront and waters of Lake Monona in addition to increasing our public open space. While Monona enjoys more than four miles of shoreline, over eighty percent of Monona residents would not have lake access were it not for our smaller parks and launches. It will be a tremendous asset for the City,” said Monona Mayor Mary O’Connor. At just under ten acres, San Damiano includes over 1,000 feet of frontage on Lake Monona. Much of the grounds are wooded. The house and property are part of the original farm developed by Allis-Chalmers heir Frank Allis in the 1880’s. The land, as is true of much of the area, was originally inhabited by Native Americans, including ancestors of the Ho- Chunk Nation. -

Lyon (Department of History, University of Chicago)Published on H- German (May, 2007) A New Theory on the Campaign that Ended the Hungarian Invasions In 955 Otto I, the ruler of the East Frankish kingdom, led an army comprised predominantly of Bavarians, Swabians, Franconians, and Bohemians against a Magyar (Hungarian) military force that had launched a raid into the south of the kingdom from the Carpathian basin. The two armies first came into contact with one another near the Lech River, in the region around Augsburg, in what is today the German state of Bavaria. Though few extant sources provide details about how the battle unfolded, it is clear that the encounter between the two sides eventually resulted in a decisive victory for Otto I. After approximately a half-century of raids into Italy and the East Frankish kingdom, the Magyars would never seriously threaten the Latin West again. Indeed, in subsequent centuries they would convert to Christianity and emerge as an important buffer between western Europe and other nomadic peoples from the steppes of Asia. For Otto I, the victory set the stage for his emergence as the dominant ruler in Latin Christendom. -

McWeeny Dean, College of Fine Arts 3 ABSTRACT GUSTAFSON, ADAM R., Ph.D., June 2011, Interdisciplinary Arts The Artistic Patronage of Albrecht V and the Creation of Catholic Identity in Sixteenth- Century Bavaria Director of Dissertation: Dora Wilson Drawing from a number of artistic media, this dissertation is an interdisciplinary approach for understanding how artworks created under the patronage of Albrecht V were used to shape Catholic identity in Bavaria during the establishment of confessional boundaries in late sixteenth-century Europe. This study presents a methodological framework for understanding early modern patronage in which the arts are necessarily viewed as interconnected, and patronage is understood as a complex and often contradictory process that involved all elements of society. First, this study examines the legacy of arts patronage that Albrecht V inherited from his Wittelsbach predecessors and developed during his reign, from 1550-1579. Albrecht V‟s patronage is then divided into three areas: northern princely humanism, traditional religion and sociological propaganda. -

6 The Foundations of Feminization EN AND WOMEN, as far as we can tell, participated equally in Christianity until about the thirteenth century. If anything, men were more prominent in the Church not Monly in clerical positions, which were restricted to men, but in religious life, which was open to both men and women. Only around the time of Bernard, Dominic, and Francis did gender differences emerge, and these differences can be seen both in demographics and in the quality of spirituality. Because these changes occurred rapidly and only in the Latin church, innate or quasi- innate differences between the sexes cannot by themselves account for the increase in women’s interest in Christian- ity or the decrease in men’s interest. In fact, the medieval feminization of Christianity followed on three movements in the Church which had just begun at the time: the preaching of a new affective spirituality and bridal mysticism by Bernard of Clairvaux;1 a Frauenbewegung, a kind of women’s movement; and Scholasticism, a school of theology. This concurrence of trends caused the Western church to become a difficult place for men. ROOTED IN THE DARK OF THE EARTH: BAVARIA’S PEASANT-FARMERS AND THE PROFIT OF A MANUFACTURED PARADISE by MICHAEL F. HOWELL (Under the Direction of John H. Morrow, Jr.) ABSTRACT Pre-modern, agrarian communities typified Bavaria until the late-19th century. Technological innovations, the railroad being perhaps the most important, offered new possibilities for a people who had for generations identified themselves in part through their local communities and also by their labor and status as independent peasant-farmers. These exciting changes, however, increasingly undermined traditional identities with self and community through agricultural labor. In other words, by changing how or what they farmed to increasingly meet the needs of urban markets, Bavarian peasant-farmers also changed the way that they viewed the land and ultimately, how they viewed themselves ― and one another. Nineteenth- century Bavarian peasant-farmers and their changing relationship with urban markets therefore serve as a case study for the earth-shattering dangers that possibly follow when modern societies (and individuals) lose their sense of community by sacrificing their relationship with the land. Benedictines in Peru
85 BENEDICTINES IN PERU N 1968 the Abbot and monks of Worth Abbey in south-west England decided to make a foundation in Peru. Fr Bede Hill, who was to be ~ the superior, had been sent out beforehand and, as a result of his report, it was decided to go to the Valley of the River Apurimac. There the Peruvian Government had put at our disposal the site of a farm from which it was hoped to help the people of the Valley. The situation was very isolated, and the monastery only approachable by boat or raft. For six years the four monks worked at building a simple monastery, clearing some land and in assisting the local people to improve their farming. They also helped to create a local Co-operative, which got the farmers out of the hands of entrepreneurs. In 1975, the monks returned to Worth, in order to evaluate the founda- tion and its work and to plan for the future. At this meeting, it was decided to move the foundation to Lima and to ask the Archbishop for a poor parish on the outskirts of the city. There were a number of factors leading to this decision; but two important ones were that the site on the Apurimac was so isolated that it was unlikely that peruvian novices would join the small community; and further, that the population of Lima had almost doubled in the previous six years, so that there was a desperate need for priests to serve the poor who were crowding in from the Sierra and Selva.
