And for those who have found this publication in your hands for the very first time, here’s to a celebration of Asian American culture and the hope that you’d pass it on. Asian Eye began in 1990 as a publication dedicated to promoting awareness of cultural, social, economic and political issues that affect Asians and Asian Americans. The magazine evolved into ALINE as the expressive voice for these students on the Syracuse University/SUNY-ESF campus. Every issue of ALINE is a collection of work from dedicated writers and artists willing to share their individual perspec- tives. Contributors of all ethnicities are welcome to submit their works as well. Our main goal is to bring these perspectives to the entire campus, and to educate the SU community and beyond on issues pertaining to race and diversity. Syracuse University emphasizes diversity as one of its main assets and ALINE is an integral part of that ideal. This publication is an outlet for Asian and Asian American stu- dents to express their views on culture and society with creative freedom. It is also an opportunity for students to understand the issues that affect Asian communities in the U.S. and overseas. ALINE Magazine is an affliate of, but is not restricted to the members of the campus organization Asian Students in America (ASIA). 4 ALINE FALL 2011 FALL 2011 ALINE 5 WIRED CANDID ASIAN AMERICAN POLITICS Pastor and social A TIMELINE media guru, Bruce Reyes-Chow Text by BENJAMIN FANG TO SAY ASIAN AMERICAN INVOLVEMENT IN House. While the dissertation itself is an overwhelming feat, this acknowledgements section feels equally heavy. Expressing my gratitude and thanks for every person who has made this possiBle feels quite impossiBle. And as someone who once detested both school and writing, there’s a lot of people I am thankful for. It is a fact that I could not completed a PhD, let alone a dissertation, on my own. Graduate school wears you down, and especially one framed By the 2016 presidential election and 2020 uprisings, rise of white supremacy, and a gloBal pandemic, graduate school is really hard and writing is the last thing you want to do. While I’ve spent days going through mental lists of people and groups who’ve helped me, this is not a complete list and my sincere apologies to anyone I’ve forgotten. First and foremost, this dissertation would not be where it is today without the guidance and support of my advisors Jo Lee and Elliott Powell. The hours of advice and words of wisdom I received from you both not only shaped my project and affirmed its direction, but they also reminded me of the realistic expectations we should have for ourselves.

It’s great to be a student again—the preparation for class, the butterflies if you get asked a question, the intellectual exchange of ideas—but, wait, I am the teacher! And I am not teaching one of my comfortable legal writing courses; I am teaching professional responsibility. Although being a student again and teaching a “casebook” course are two perspectives of legal education different from mine as a legal writing professor, I learned much about teaching legal writing from both. To teach professional responsibility for the first provide quality care to patients, law professors time, I had to become a student again—relearning should become students occasionally to remind old rules and studying new ones. • Machine Learning (Ml) for Tracking the Geo-Temporality of a Trend: Documenting the Frequency of the Baseball-Trucker Hat on Social Media and the Runway
MACHINE LEARNING (ML) FOR TRACKING THE GEO-TEMPORALITY OF A TREND: DOCUMENTING THE FREQUENCY OF THE BASEBALL-TRUCKER HAT ON SOCIAL MEDIA AND THE RUNWAY A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts by Rachel Rose Getman May 2019 © 2019 Rachel Rose Getman ABSTRACT This study applied fine-grained Machine Learning (ML) to document the frequency of baseball-trucker hats on social media with images populated from the Matzen et al. (2017) StreetStyle-27k Instagram dataset (2013-2016) and as produced in runway shows for the luxury market with images populated from the Vogue Runway database (2000-2018). The results show a low frequency of baseball-trucker hats on social media from 2013-2016 with little annual fluctuation. The Vogue Runway plots showed that baseball-hats appeared on the runway before 2008 with a slow but steady annual increase from 2008 through 2018 with a spike in 2016 to 2017. The trend is discussed within the context of social, cultural, and economic factors. Although ML requires refinement, its use as a tool to document and analyze increasingly complex trends is promising for scholars. The study shows one implementation of high-level concept recognition to map the geo-temporality of a fashion trend. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Rachel R. Getman holds a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). Her interests lie in the intersection of arts and sciences through interdisciplinary collaboration. The diversification of her professional experience from the service industry, education, wardrobe styling, apparel production, commercial vocals, and organic agriculture influence her advocacy for holistic thinking and non-linear problem solving.
