On the one hand, I was drawn toward works that focused on questions of participatory democracy and co- production of meaning with “non-experts” in architectural and planning practice.1 On the other hand, I was intrigued by propositions that provoked architectural debate and functioned as strategic counterpoints to the political status quo.2 It soon became apparent that a heterogeneous set of architects from both developments impacted the field during this time, and that the anti- authoritarian “events” of May 1968 in France constituted an important moment when questions of space through participatory activism coincided with those in avant-garde experimentation. I elected to structure my study of these developments around writings of Henri Lefebvre, a common denominator in theories of space. I first encountered Lefebvre’s writings in his preface to Philippe Boudon’s pioneering study of Le Corbusier’s Pessac Housing (1969, 1972 tr.).3 A comparative study on the participatory works of Lucien Kroll and the program-oriented strategies of Bernard Tschumi offered an opportunity to test how architects interested in new spatial paradigms and new attitudes to the city shared or did not share objectives with their 1 The earliest points of reference for me were: Giancarlo de Carlo, “Architecture’s Public” (1969) in Peter Blundell Jones, Doina Petrescu, and Jeremy Till, Architecture and Participation (New York: Spon Press, 2005), 3–22; C. Is this continent already in the line 17 of vision? Many European architects are currently building significant complexes: 2/20 the ARPT by Mario Cucinella, the new hospital in Tangiers by Architecture Studio or the future urban development in Oran by Massimiliano Fuksas, among other projects. But the African architectural approach also reveals real dynamics. This is the idea which seem to express the international exhibitions on African architecture during these last years, on the cultural side and architectural and archi-news archi-news city-panning approach, as well as in relation to the experimental means proposed by numerous sub-Saharan countries after their independence in the sixties, as a way to show their national identity. Not the least of contradictions, this architecture was often imported from foreign countries, sometimes from former colonial powers. The demographic explosion and the galloping city planning have contributed to this situation. The recent exhibition « African Capitals » in La Villette (Paris) proposes a new view on the constantly changing African city, whilst rethinking the evolution of the African city and more largely the modern city. As the contemporary African art is rich and varied – the Paris Louis Vuitton Foundation is presently organizing three remarkable exhibitions – the African architecture can’t be reduced to a single generalized label, because of the originality of the different nations and their socio-historical background. The challenges imply to take account and to control many parameters in relation with the urbanistic pressure and the population.

    Deconstructivism: Richness or Chaos to Postmodern Architecture Olivier Clement Gatwaza1, Xin CAO1 1School of Landscape Architecture, Beijing Forestry University, 35 Qinghua East Road Beijing, 100083 China Abstract: In this paper, we examine the involvement of deconstructivism in the evolvement of postmodern architecture and ascertain its public acceptance dimensions as it progressively conquers postmodern architecture. To achieve this, we used internet search engines such as Google, Yahoo, Wikipedia and Web of Science, we also used knowledge repositories such as Google Scholar and the world’s largest travel site TripAdvisor to gather information and data about origin, evolution, characteristics and relationship between postmodernism and deconstructivism. We’ve based our judgment on concepts from famous architects, political leaders and public opinion to access the suitability of architectural style. The result of this research shows that postmodernism architecture buildings have an average 96.8% of visitor’s satisfaction ranking; while deconstructivism architecture buildings when taken alone, a decrease of 2% in visitor’s satisfaction ranking is perceived. In addition, strong comments against the upcoming architectural style confirm that deconstructivism still has ingredients to endorse in order to impose its trajectory towards the top of modern architecture.     Christian de Portzamparc 1994 Laureate Acceptance Speech Today is a great day in my life, and I am an extremely happy man. To join the list of architects this prize has honored, when only yesterday I still felt personally that every project was for me a new experiment, has brought me a strange mixture of excitement and serenity, while at the same time facing me with a great responsibility: I can no longer afford to make any mistakes. I have a duty of excellence towards you, and as we never know where that lies, I shall never be able to stop. I see the concern already on the face of Elizabeth, my wife, who, as well as designing her own furniture, supports me so marvelously in my work. It is a wonderful profession to be in, but it is often an uphill struggle. Architecture is an art, but a public art. More often than not, the public does not choose architecture as it would a museum to visit. Instead, architecture is imposed on us, in our daily life, our homes and our places of work. And for this reason, the architect-artist is accountable for his work; he owes an explanation. We are asked to express ourselves all the time. And it’s normal. And because architecture is a public art, architects, unlike other artists, do not enjoy complete personal creative freedom. They are expected to impart a sort of legitimacy to their work by providing the right answers to the needs of a particular era. I have often felt, in this respect, that I am following a very personal path, and perhaps more than others, I have had my doubts at times.
