  • 47 Section 3 Maize (Zea Mays Subsp. Mays)
SECTION 3 MAIZE (ZEA MAYS SUBSP. MAYS) 1. General Information Maize, or corn, is a member of the Maydeae tribe of the grass family, Poaceae. It is a robust monoecious annual plant, which requires the help of man to disperse its seeds for propagation and survival. Corn is the most efficient plant for capturing the energy of the sun and converting it into food, it has a great plasticity adapting to extreme and different conditions of humidity, sunlight, altitude, and temperature. It can only be crossed experimentally with the genus Tripsacum, however member species of its own genus (teosinte) easily hybridise with it under natural conditions. This document describes the particular condition of maize and its wild relatives, and the interactions between open-pollinated varieties and teosinte. It refers to the importance of preservation of native germplasm and it focuses on the singular conditions in its centre of origin and diversity. Several biological and socio-economic factors are considered important in the cultivation of maize and its diversity; therefore these are described as well. A. Use as a crop plant In industrialised countries maize is used for two purposes: 1) to feed animals, directly in the form of grain and forage or sold to the feed industry; and 2) as raw material for extractive industries. "In most industrialised countries, maize has little significance as human food" (Morris, 1998; Galinat, 1988; Shaw, 1988). In the European Union (EU) maize is used as feed as well as raw material for industrial products (Tsaftaris, 1995). Thus, maize breeders in the United States and the EU focus on agronomic traits for its use in the animal feed industry, and on a number of industrial traits such as: high fructose corn syrup, fuel alcohol, starch, glucose, and dextrose (Tsaftaris, 1995).

FORMER EMPLOYEE CHARTED IN BEL AIR TACO BELL ROBBERY Police have charged an ex-employee in connection with a robbery last week at the Taco Bell restaurant in Bel Air during which three employees were locked in a freezer. David Joseph Furey, 25, of the 800 block of Pecan Court in Bel Air, was arrested and charged Thursday with armed robbery, second- and fourth-degree burglary, theft less than $1,000 and theft between $1,000 and $10,000. Around 6 a.m. on July 25, one of three employees in the restaurant on Route 1 in Bel Air Town Center, opened the back door to take out the trash when a man holding a baseball bat, later identified as Furey, motioned for the employee to go back inside, then allegedly motioned for all three employees to go into the restaurant's walk-in freezer, according to charging documents. Each employee was patted down, and Furey allegedly took a cell phone, wallet and iPod touch, according to the charging documents. Furey did not communicate other than by gestures and by typing messages on the iPod Touch he allegedly stole, according to charging documents.

When I heard a man was in town who was trying to save Mexican corn, I zipped over the border from San Diego, wondering what about Mexican corn could possibly need saving. I drove down the coast highway and ended up in the garage of an oceanfront luxury high-rise in Rosarito, where Mier is staying. Aer spending more than a week in northwest Mexico, meeting with chefs multiple times a day, he is surprisingly energetic, almost like it’s his rst day on the job. Mier is the founder of the Organización Tortilla de Maíz Mexicana, a mostly one-man activist organization focused on educating Mexicans about good tortillas. He hopes his eorts will save the country’s heirloom corn varieties from extinction. He travels around the country talking to rural-village farmers, big-name chefs, government ocials, and anyone else who might be wondering what is actually in the tortillas they’re eating.

Together with its sister city of El Paso, Texas, it comprises a single metropolitan area of more than two million people. This stretch of border is well-served by four bridges that connect the two countries. Ciudad Juarez is the most important manufacturing city in Mexico, and along with commerce, it makes up a fundamental part of the economy. This iconic city is surrounded by beautiful natural landscapes and wildlife areas. Arriving in this prosperous border city you’ll find the vast white expanse of the Salamayuca Desert to the south and the imposing Rio Grande River to the north. Here you can also admire colonial buildings, such as the Guadalupe Mission, the beautiful city cathedral, and the monumental former customs building. In addition to being a great place to do business, Ciudad Juarez is also an excellent cultural and adventure tourism destination, thanks in large part to its close proximity to the desert. BUSINESS IN CIUDAD JUAREZ Hundreds of multinational corporations have established a presence in Ciudad Juarez to take advantage of easy access to the United States and a skilled labor market. • Tex-Mex, Cal-Mex, New Mex, Or Whose Mex?
Tex-Mexy Cal-Mex> New Mex, or Whose Mex? Notes on the Historical Geography of Southwestern Cuisine Jeffrey M. Pilcher Residents of the United States often have a peculiar view of Mexi- can food, drawn more from Mexican American restaurants or from fast food simulations than from actual experience south of the border. While the combination plates at local restaurants offer little of the rich com- plexity of Mexico's regional cuisines, they do have a history of their own, one that reflects the ongoing struggle of Mexican Americans to gain acceptance and citizenship in the United States.1 The cooking of the Southwest, like Mexican cooking in general, embodies a fusion of Native American and Hispanic influences, the lega- cy of three centuries of first Spanish and then Mexican rule. As exam- ples of a common regional style, norteno cooking, the dishes from different parts of the borderlands - resemble each other more than they do the foods of other parts of Mexico. One distinctive characteristic of northern Mexican cooking is the use of wheat flour instead of corn in making tortillas. The great herds of livestock raised along the frontier made nortenos more carnivorous, in particular more fond of beef, than Mexicans farther south. On the other hand, the grassy plains and arid deserts of the north, well suited to cattle ranching and irrigated wheat farming, offered less variety in vegetables, herbs, and chiles, limiting the potential for complex sauces and soups. These common elements notwithstanding, considerable variety also exists within Southwestern cooking. Cheryl Alters Jamison and Bill Jamison, in their authoritative work The Border Cookbook, define four broad regions straddling the U.S.

In our time, being self-conscious about our weight, cholesterol levels or overall health, we also want these beverages to have as few calories as possible. But we would not hesitate to consider thes e drinks one of the most ingenious and useful inventions of our times. How wrong we are! The Indians from Southern Meso amer - ica, including the region that we know today as Chiapas, invented a few of them long before Europeans made contact with the New World. Their origin is rooted in the way ancient Mexicans got to know and exploited their staple food: maize or corn. This remarkable plant yields more food per hectare than other grains , and its bio - chemical make-up and physical cha r acteristics give it some interesting properties. * Researcher at the UNAM Institute for Anthropo logical Research and School of Medicine.
