Russian Literature in the Post-Soviet Era and Japanese Readers Twenty years have passed since the Soviet Union disintegrated, and today, in this symposium, some of the changes in Russian literature and culture over this 20-year period will be discussed. The Japanese had some opportunities to discuss Russian literature in the post-Soviet period. For example, in 1996, Quo Vadis Russia, a large symposium on Russian culture, history, and society, was held at the University of Tokyo. Russian writers Fasil Iskander and Alexander Genis participated in this event. This symposium was so remarkable that a special issue of the well-known Japanese journal Gendai Shiso (Contemporary Philosophy) was dedicated to it (1997, No.4). Unfortunately, this symposium left a vague impression, as nobody could know “Quo Vadis Russia” or anticipate Putin’s regime. Now it can be said that a turning point in Russian literature was embodied in this symposium. One of the great Soviet writers, Iskander, made an appearance during it, and Genis discussed the most famous writer of the new generation, Victor Pelevin. Two years later, Vladimir Sorokin’s splatter novel Roman (1994) was translated into Japanese by Tetsuo Mochizuki, and the Japanese could get a taste of contemporary Russian literature. In addition to this translation, famous conceptualists from Moscow visited Japan during these times, and their school became popular in Japan, where Ilya Kabakov gave numerous presentations of his works. -

A Memorable Time: the prose of Vladimir Makanin, 1987-1995 Sarah Kate Jackson Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Russian and Slavonic Studies February 2001 A MEMORABLE TIME: THE PROSE OF VLADIMIR MAKANIN, 1987-1995 by SARAH KATE JACKSON PhD February 2001 Abstract Spanning over three decades, the prose of Vladimir Makanin bears witness to the extraordinary changes SovietlRussian society and literature have undergone, and to which he, as a writer, has been continually exposed. The focus of the thesis is Makanin's abiding concern with the condition of man; man as individual and man as a collective term. The position of man in time (contemporaneity), out of time (the eternal memory of man), and through time (the past, present and future). Despite this apparent central concern, the author's prose is constantly changing, and what seemed previously to be absolutes are subverted. In this unstable environment the author continually expresses the reality in which he perceives man to be, until the concepts of 'reality' and the nature of 'man' are themselves destabilised. Chapter 1 provides an introductory overview of Makanin' s literary career and critical reception. The five core chapters examine different presentations of man's condition. Chapter 2 discusses the tension of the individual amongst the collective, with particular emphasis on the spatial representation of this dilemma. The third chapter is an examination of the incorporation of parables, myths and legends, revealing attempts to depict a 'higher reality' and also the author's means of overcoming socialist realism's censorship constraints. In Chapter 4, the author's concept of 'genetic memory' is considered as a temporal and spatial construct for examining man's individuality and condition in contemporary society. -

If, as postmodernist theory suggests, there can be no overarching cultural (or other) narratives, then in the aftermath of the Soviet Union’s collapse post-Soviet Russia found itself in a void, with no old, established national narrative and no new “Russian idea” to shape future identity. Literature on the Margins: Russian Fiction in the Nineties Abstract Despite shrinkage in print runs and readership, canonical Literature during the 1990s developed along three major lines that connected writers of various generations in both aesthetics and philosophy: realism, exemplified in Georgii Vladimov's prize-winning novel, The General and His Army (1994); postmodernism, richly represented in the fiction of Vladimir Sorokin, Viktor Pelevin, and Vladimir Sharov; and neosentimentalism, as derived from the naturalism of early perestroika, most consistently embraced by Liudmila Petrushevskaia, Liudmila Ulitskaia, and, in his paternal profession de foi, one of Russia's chief theorists of postmodernism, Mikhail Epshtein. All three tendencies aspired to the status of mainstream, which they failed to attain, owing to a fundamental instability that chaos theory has labeled a "bifurcation cascade." Inasmuch as that stage, according to specialists in chaos theory, leads to irreversible changes that effect a high level of stability, the outlook for Russian literature at century's end might be less bleak than prophesied by doomsayers. -

В темном двадцатом веке С четкой вывеской “Сталин” Совесть была в человеке, Если пьяницей стал он. -Boris Slutsky At the First Congress of Soviet Writers in 1934, Andrei Zhdanov had declared that “the whole life of our party, the whole life of our working class and its struggle combines the most stern and sober practical work with a supreme spirit of heroic deeds and magnifi cent future prospects.” A directive had been handed down: documenting those “heroic deeds,” those podvigi, and incar- nating the heroes who performed them was the task of the offi cial Soviet writer. As became clear in 1946, when Zhdanov presided over the purging of Anna Akhmatova and Mikhail Zoshchenko, there was no place in the Soviet Union for a nonoffi cial writer. Th is is what we have been examining in the preceding chapters: creating heroes was offi cial policy. What, then, happened to writers who refused to document heroic deeds? In many cases they “wrote for the long drawer,” as the Russian saying goes; in some cases they published abroad, as did Voinovich, and in others they 174 6. -

In the last few decades, much attention has been directed at the Caucasians in literary works and movies as a result of the two Chechen wars. This thesis addresses the evolution of the Caucasian theme in Russian literature beginning from the 18th century with a focus on the contemporary representation of the peoples of Caucasus, mainly Chechens, in three works: a Soviet-era movie by Leonid Gaidai, Kidnapping, Caucasian Style (1966); Vladimir Makanin’s story, Captive of the Caucasus (1994) and Viktor Pelevin’s story, Papakhi na bashniakh (1995).
