2016-17 was a good season for MCC It was the best of seasons, it was the wettest of seasons...

Plenty of good cricket, but too much rain for my liking. Over 500 cricketers played with MCC this season – enjoying our great game across fields (and puddles) of the Inner West. We’re a strong club with good links to our local community. We have a great relationship with our local senior grade clubs Randwick Petersham CC and University Women’s CC. And MCC is fortunate to have two generous, solid sponsors in Sydney Airport and Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL. We are grateful for their ongoing support. We had 25 teams in CWSCA and Sydney Thunder Girls comps, which is more than double the number of teams we had six years ago. We now have a record seven U9 MCC and Marrickville Council helped 16 parents get teams, with 80% of players coming from Milo or Level 1 Coaching Certificates – an investment in T20. Marrickville Cricket Club Season Report 2016-17 | 5 T20 Blast

T20 Blast The weather couldn’t dampen the enthusiasm for our 3rd season of Milo T20 Blast.

Our eight-week season was cut a little short with the appalling wet weather we had during March. From heat waves to thunder storms, we experienced it all in 2017. MCC had 84 players registered, which is down on the last two years, but there were plenty of keen players who brought lots of personality. It was pleasing to see returning MCC players, some whom had come from Milo In2Cricket, and others who were augmenting their club duties with a bit of fun on a Friday. We also had a good handful of girls playing, many of whom I hope will play club for MCC during 2017-2018. Even with a shortened season, skills were learnt, practiced and it is surprising how quickly some children improve. We were joined in the Skill Zone by Jed and Chloe, who work with Cricket NSW to deliver and carers of MCC players. Most people were programs through schools, camps and clubs. They quite willing to help out by umpiring, scoring, brought a good deal of enthusiasm to our Friday helping to coordinate the side and packing evenings and certainly made some friends within up. I am reliably informed that we have a ‘well the Marrickville Cricket Club community with above average’ parent participation rate, much their patience and knowledge. better than most clubs in the Sydney area. This year about half the team moved from U9s Saggers 2016, a few new players came and another staying within the under 10s to lend some experience. It was a bit of a stop-start season. Marrickville Cricket Club Season Report 2016-17 | 37 A few reflections

With apologies to Colin MacInnes

Though cricket can sometimes be inextricably dull, it can sometimes be more nerve-wracking than any other sport I have seen – including State of Origin, the AFL and soccer with Messi, Suarez & Neymar Jr on the field at Camp Nou.

When grace descends upon a game, cricket is mathematically exciting as well as physically; it’s a game played by athletes who are also chess players.

There is the battle against time and the correct use of it, which is an allegory of the role time plays in all our lives. Teams, and especially captains, must calculate their time-and-effort strategy to a nicety.

Cricket is so polite and yet so ferocious. There is all that clapping of your opponents, all that tactful by- play between overs, those caps and sweaters, those oranges and drinks run onto the field.

But there is also the hazard, which is greater than in boxing; so that if I had to face either or Muhammad Ali, I would choose Ali as the lesser evil.

Cricketers are brave men and, at the same time, so casual, so apparently unexcited; and when they are locked in a vital struggle, and yet behave so coolly, they restore one’s faith in human dignity; for to be valiant and calm is a marvellous human condition.

And lastly, don’t forget...
