The use of the underground space assists in reducing the impact of the climate change and CO2 emission. It is ITA’s vision and strategy to promote the use of tunnelling and underground space through knowledge sharing and application of technology. In supporting its vision, ITA decided to launch a dedicated Tunnelling Awards initiative to identify the outstanding developments in the fi eld of tunneling and underground space use, and provide international recognition that these remarkable contributions deserve. I am very pleased to see the interest that this initiative has created with more than 100 entries made. The international panel of judges selected among all entries the fi nalists which now forms parts of the conference program and we will all be able to learn about the achievements made. Shenzhen North Railway Station in the north to the centre line of Shenzhen River as a boundary between Shenzhen and Hong Kong, and composed of Yitian Road Tunnel, Futian Station and Shenzhen-Hong Kong Tunnel Main structure of Futian Station is a three- layer underground concrete structure with long span, ultra thickness and large ratio of length to height. By confi guring high-performance anti-cracking concrete and anti-cracking structure design and combining with crack prevention construction technology for structure, the overall project of the Station is not provided with deformation joints to ensure the smooth track, and improve the waterproof quality of underground works. Futian Station is of a composite structure of concrete fi lled steel tubular columns and steel reinforced concrete beams, and details of steel tubular columns are specifi cally designed to improve the structural behaviour and save construction materials.
