The Gulf Military Balance in 2019: a Graphic Analysis
Anthony H. Cordesman, Arleigh A. Burke Chair in Strategy The Gulf Military Balance in 2019: A Graphic Analysis Anthony H. Cordesman and Abdullah Toukan With the Assistance of Max Molot Working Paper: Please send comments to [email protected] REVISED December 9, 2019 Photo: ARASH KHAMOUSHI/AFP/ Getty Images Introduction 2 The military balance in the Gulf region has become steadily more complex with time. Conventional forces have been been reshaped by massive arms transfers, and changes in major weapons, technology, and virtually every aspect of joint warfare, command and control, sensors, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance systems. Missile warfare is changing radically as diverse mixes of ballistic and cruise missiles, UAVs and UCAVs, and missiles are deployed. Precision-guided, conventionally armed missiles are becoming a key aspect of regional forces, and so are missile defenses. The threat of nuclear pro0liferation remains, and at least one state – Iran - is a declared chemical weapons power while the Assad regime in Syria has made repeated use of chemical weapons At the same time, asymmetric forces, “proxy” forces, and various forms of military advisory and support missions are playing a growing role in local conflicts and gray area operations. So are local militia and security forces – often divided within a given Gulf state by sect and ethnicity. Terrorist and extremist forces continue pose serious threats, as do political tensions and upheavals, and the weaknesses and failures of some regional governments to meet the needs of their people. The most serious sources of Gulf conflicts are now the tensions between Iran and the Arab Gulf states, and the role played by terrorists and extremists, but civil war and insurgencies remain an additional threat - as does the links between Iran, Syria, and the Hezbollah. -

Its material culture, as exemplified by the finds at belt; Gargul; Iran; Hasanlu; Hasanlu, Marlik and in Luristan, suggests the elite in the area were consumers of fine, locally iconography produced metalwork. This paper discusses the discovery of an artifact that expands our understanding of the material culture of northwestern Iran during the ninth century BC: a decorated bronze belt found at Gargul, Iran. The chance discovery of this belt, which is closely related to a type known only from the most elite contexts at Hasanlu, Iran, provides a hint of the richness and complexity of the entire region. -
Renewal and Perspectives in Iranian Archaeology Over the Last Two Decades
RENEWAL AND PERSPECTIVES IN IRANIAN ARCHAEOLOGY OVER THE LAST TWO DECADES Rémy Boucharlat (Université de Lyon) In memory of Olivier Lecomte From Tureng Tepe to Ulug Depe a 45-year friendship ABSTRACT These few pages provide a very schematic overview of archaeological research in Iran since the end of the 20th century. The recent evolution is sharply marked with the port-revolutionary period with a new policy and the emergence of new generations of numerous and well-trained archaeologists. Most of them are employed in the provinces and work on rescue excavations, which are increasingly organised upstream as preventive excavations, but also on multi-year programs to provide information on less known archaeological periods. The western half of the country is much better known and more studied than the eastern half, but the recent field research launched in the south, along the Persian Gulf, and in the northeast (Khorasan) is very promising. KEYWORDS Rescue archaeology, Joint expeditions, Archaeometry, New research áreas, Khorasan, South Iran. -
Fifth and Fourth Millennium BC in North-Western Iran> Dalma and Pisdeli
Documenta Praehistorica XLII (2015) Fifth and fourth millennium BC in north-western Iran> Dalma and Pisdeli revisited Akbar Abedi 1, Behrooz Omrani 2 and Azam Karimifar 3 1 Tabriz Islamic Art University, IR [email protected] 2 ICHHTO of Tabriz, IR 3 Islamic Azad University of Miyaneh, IR ABSTRACT – This paper discusses the nature of Dalma and Pisdeli cultures, their regional and inter- regional interactions and expansions in 5th millennium BC. It discusses old and new excavations and surveys as well. According to the importance of the material from these periods found at newly-ex- cavated sites such as Kul Tepe Jolfa, Dava Göz Khoy, Lavin Tepe, and Qosha Tepe, we briefly describe the main stratigraphic and material data from these sites. Old and new data from excavations and surveys eventually lead us to a new chronological table for the 5th millennium BC in north/western (NW) Iran. The implications of the finds are discussed along with their limitations and future re- search directions. The Horse and the Lion in Achaemenid Persia: Representations of a Duality
arts Article The Horse and the Lion in Achaemenid Persia: Representations of a Duality Eran Almagor Independent Researcher, P.O. Box 3410, Jerusalem 91033, Israel; [email protected] Abstract: This paper explores the ambiguous Persian Achaemenid attitude towards the horse and the lion. It examines the way these animals appear in imperial official presentations, local artifacts throughout the empire and Greek textual representations. In the case of the stallion, it looks at the imagery of horse riding or the place of the horse in society and religion alongside the employment of steeds in chariots. Images of the lion are addressed in instances where it appears to be respected as having a significant protective power and as the prey of the chase. This paper attempts to show that this ambiguity corresponds roughly to the dual image of the Persians as both pre-imperial/nomad Citation: Almagor, Eran. 2021. The and imperial/sedentary (and hence allegedly luxurious), a schism that is manifest in both the Horse and the Lion in Achaemenid self-presentation of the Achaemenids and in the Greek texts.
