AUDITION NOTICE Electric City Playhouse (ECP) proudly announces auditions for Jerry’s Girls Music and Lyrics by Jerry Herman Concepts by Larry Alford, Wayne Cilento, and Jerry Herman Directed by Alexandria Bagwell and Ian Coulter with Musical Direction by Heather Brown Presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals. www.concordtheatricals.com . Jerry’s Girls runs October 1-10, 2021; Fridays/Saturdays at 7:30 pm; Sundays at 3 pm. Performances take place at Electric City Playhouse, 514 N. Murray Avenue, Anderson SC 29625. Auditions will be held at ECP • Saturday, July 24; 1-3 pm • Sunday, July 25; 7-9 pm Video auditions are welcome and can be sent to [email protected]. Deadline for submission of video auditions is midnight July 24, 2021. Synopsis: A tribute to composer and lyricist Jerry Herman, this musical extravaganza features all the best songs from such immortal musicals as Mame, Hello Dolly!, Milk and Honey, Mack and Mabel, A Day in Hollywood/A Night in the Ukraine, and La Cage Aux Folles. Characters/Roles: We are very excited to share that four of the original cast members from the postponed show are available and will be on the stage for this performance. To round out the cast we are looking for 4 to 8 sopranos, mezzo sopranos, and altos as well as drag performers with a baritenor range. Persons of all age ranges and ethnicities are invited and encouraged to audition. Preparation: Please bring 32 bars of a musical theatre piece that shows off your voice! Please bring sheet music for the accompanist or a track (Bluetooth speaker is available). A capella singing is also welcomed. All auditionees are encouraged to bring a non-returnable headshot and resume. Audition forms are linked on the ECP website and you are encouraged to fill them out ahead of time. Copies will be available onsite. Should an auditionee not have a headshot, we will take a photo during auditions for the directors’ reference. Anticipated Rehearsal Schedule: Rehearsals may begin as early as August 2 and will primarily be on weeknights, with the exception of Wednesdays, until TECH WEEK, which begins September 25. Scheduling will take into account unavoidable conflicts of cast members. .

Melanie Veazey is excited to return to the Athens for her fourth show. She has played some of her favorite strong women here; Adelaide in Guys and Dolls, Mortitia in Addams Family and Tessie Tura in Gypsy. Last season, Melanie performed with The Ensemble Company where she had the pleasure of playing the Marquise in Les Liaisons Dangereuses as well as Masha in Vanya, Sonya, Masha and Spike (Best Actress Nominee by the Orlando Sentinel). Her regional theater credits include Adelaide in Guys and Dolls with Barry Williams, Lola in Damn Yankees and Louise in Gypsy with Loni Ackerman. She has appeared on the small screen in Equal Justice with Sarah Jessica Parker and the Internet Series What’s New America and Mastering Business. Her commercial credits include Bealls, Havertys, Disney, Disney Cruise, Universal, Busch Gardens, Adidas, Sonny’s BBQ, Telemundo, Meijer Superstores. I examine how song and dance – sites of aesthetic difference within the musical – can warp time and enable marginalized and semi-marginalized fans to imagine different ways of being in the world. Musical numbers can complicate a linear, developmental plot by accelerating and decelerating time, foregrounding repetition and circularity, bringing the past to life and projecting into the future, and physicalizing dreams in a narratively open present. These excesses have the potential to contest naturalized constructions of historical, progressive time, as well as concordant constructions of gender, sexual, and racial identities. While the musical has historically been a rich source of identification for the stereotypical white gay male show queen, this project validates a broad and flexible range of non-normative readings.

Through a process of recycling which probably owed as much to the potential of the original story as it did to a logic of commercial security, the story of Mrs. Dolly Levi – the meddling matchmaker who sorts out everyone’s love lives and contrives to marry her biggest client herself – had been prosperous on stage and screen for the previous ten years, and would continue to attract audiences to this day.2 Not unlike My Fair Lady, which previously held the record for longest-running Broadway musical, Hello, Dolly! trod on the “surer road to success,”3 with a book based on a popular play by an acclaimed playwright – Thornton Wilder’s The Matchmaker –, and one which had already been famously adapted to the screen with a cast starring, among others, Shirley Booth and Shirley MacLane.
