UCLA UCLA Electronic Theses and Dissertations Title Doing the Time Warp: Queer Temporalities and Musical Theater Permalink https://escholarship.org/uc/item/1k1860wx Author Ellis, Sarah Taylor Publication Date 2013 Peer reviewed|Thesis/dissertation eScholarship.org Powered by the California Digital Library University of California UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Doing the Time Warp: Queer Temporalities and Musical Theater A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Theater and Performance Studies by Sarah Taylor Ellis 2013 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Doing the Time Warp: Queer Temporalities and Musical Theater by Sarah Taylor Ellis Doctor of Philosophy in Theater and Performance Studies University of California, Los Angeles, 2013 Professor Sue-Ellen Case, Co-chair Professor Raymond Knapp, Co-chair This dissertation explores queer processes of identification with the genre of musical theater. I examine how song and dance – sites of aesthetic difference within the musical – can warp time and enable marginalized and semi-marginalized fans to imagine different ways of being in the world. Musical numbers can complicate a linear, developmental plot by accelerating and decelerating time, foregrounding repetition and circularity, bringing the past to life and projecting into the future, and physicalizing dreams in a narratively open present. These excesses have the potential to contest naturalized constructions of historical, progressive time, as well as concordant constructions of gender, sexual, and racial identities. While the musical has historically been a rich source of identification for the stereotypical white gay male show queen, this project validates a broad and flexible range of non-normative readings.

Harmony at Harmonia? Glamor and farce in Hello, Dolly!, from Wilder to Kelly Julie Vatain-Corfdir & Émilie Rault When Hello, Dolly! opened on Broadway in January 1964, immediately to be hailed as “a musical shot through with enchantment,”1 New York audiences were by no means greeting Dolly for the first time. Through a process of recycling which probably owed as much to the potential of the original story as it did to a logic of commercial security, the story of Mrs. Dolly Levi – the meddling matchmaker who sorts out everyone’s love lives and contrives to marry her biggest client herself – had been prosperous on stage and screen for the previous ten years, and would continue to attract audiences to this day.2 Not unlike My Fair Lady, which previously held the record for longest-running Broadway musical, Hello, Dolly! trod on the “surer road to success,”3 with a book based on a popular play by an acclaimed playwright – Thornton Wilder’s The Matchmaker –, and one which had already been famously adapted to the screen with a cast starring, among others, Shirley Booth and Shirley MacLane.

MADogram Editor: Cathy Barth, [email protected], 301-446-6300 MADogram Holiday, 2014 Plan Now for “The Musical of Musicals (The Musical!)” Tickets for MAD’s Winter Show go on sale starting January 5 from the MAD web site, http://madtheater.org. Get ready for our gala return to newly-renovated Barney and Bea Recreation Center. We’re celebrating with an exciting musical that's all about musicals. It's the old melodrama "You must pay the rent" but as five mini-musicals parodying and paying homage to American and British musical theater legends: Rodgers and Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim, Jerry Herman, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and Kander and Ebb. Be prepared to hear some things that sound very familiar, but in a whole new way. The show is directed by Randy Barth and produced by Andy Negri, and features Dave Buckingham, Betsy Edwards, Katrina Jackson, Christa Kronser, Mike Marshall, Don Mitchell, Marie Nearing, Kathy Nieman, Shawn Perry, Melanie Pino-Elliott, Rachel Pino-Elliott, and Jack Scheer, with Dave Larko at the keyboard. Performances are February 13-28: Fridays and Saturdays at 8, Sundays at 2. Doors open 30 minutes before the show. Snacks and sodas will be available for sale, as well as wine for a donation; or you can bring your own beer or wine. Unfortunately the new Rec Center rules make it difficult for us to offer hot hor d'oeuvres the way we did in the past. We will still have tables, but seating is general admission so come early for the best seats. Tickets are only $20.

You did a wonderful job. • Bernadette Peters Throughout Her Illustrious Career, Tony Award-Winning Actress Bernadette Peters Has Dazzled Audiences and Crit
Bernadette Peters Throughout her illustrious career, Tony Award-winning actress Bernadette Peters has dazzled audiences and critics with her performances on stage and television, in concert, and on recordings. She recently starred on Broadway in the Stephen Sondheim / James Goldman critically acclaimed production of Follies, following a successful run at the Kennedy Center. Prior to that, she starred opposite Elaine Stritch in the Stephen Sondheim / Hugh Wheeler Tony Award- winning masterpiece, A Little Night Music. In 2012, Bernadette was honored with her third Tony Award, The Isabelle Stevenson Special Award that acknowledges an individual from the theatre community who has made a substantial contribution of volunteered time and effort on behalf of one or more humanitarian, social service or charitable organizations. Recently, Peters added author and songwriter to her roster of achievements with her debut children’s book, Broadway Barks, aptly named after the organization she co-founded with good friend, Mary Tyler Moore. The book landed on the New York Times Bestseller list shortly after publication. The organization’s annual star-studded animal adoption event takes place in Shubert Alley in the heart of NYC’s theater district, and benefits over 20 animal shelters in and around the New York City area. The book package includes a CD recording of an original song written and sung by the author. Her second children’s book, Stella is a Star features yet another of her original songs, of which all proceeds from the sale of both books go to Broadway Barks!. In November 2009, Peters performed a special one-night-only concert in New York City at the Minskoff Theatre, called “Bernadette Peters: A Special Concert for Broadway Barks Because Broadway Cares”, which benefitted both Broadway Barks and Broadway Cares/ Equity Fights AIDS.
