  • Mabel's Blunder
Mabel’s Blunder By Brent E. Walker Mabel Normand was the first major female comedy star in American motion pictures. She was also one of the first female directors in Hollywood, and one of the original principals in Mack Sennett’s pioneering Keystone Comedies. “Mabel’s Blunder” (1914), made two years after the formation of the Keystone Film Company, captures Normand’s talents both in front of and behind the camera. Born in Staten Island, New York in 1892, a teenage Normand modeled for “Gibson Girl” creator Charles Dana Gibson before entering motion pictures with Vitagraph in 1910. In the summer of 1911, she moved over to the Biograph company, where D.W. Griffith was making his mark as a pioneering film director. Griffith had already turned actresses such as Florence Lawrence and Mary Pickford into major dramatic stars. Normand, however, was not as- signed to the dramas made by Griffith. Instead, she went to work in Biograph’s comedy unit, directed by an actor-turned-director named Mack Sennett. Normand’s first major film “The Diving Girl” (1911) brought her notice with nickelodeon audiences. A 1914 portrait of Mabel Normand looking Mabel quickly differentiated herself from the other uncharacteristically somber. 1 Solomon and Sinatra: The Song of Songs and Romance in the Church Robert Case A Sunday School Class Faith Presbyterian Church Tacoma, Washington 2016 Part 3 There are a multitude of biblical themes expressed by non-believing Jewish songwriters in the American Songbook, but one fine example for our purposes in this class is the theme of: no Sex before marriage “Love and Marriage” In 1955 Jimmy Van Heusen (a Methodist) with Jewish lyricist Sammy Cahn wrote “Love and Marriage” which was introduced (ironically) by Frank Sinatra in the television production of Thornton Wilder's Our Town. It is the biggest hit to ever come out of a television special. In 1956, the song, "Love and Marriage" won the Emmy Award for Best Musical Contribution from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. The Cahn inspired clever lyrics euphemistically call “sex” “love” and claim that mom told dad you can’t have sex (“love”) without marriage. The song was used as the theme song for the long-running (1987–97) FOX television sitcom Married... with Children. Additionally, the song has been used in several national commercial campaigns. “Love and marriage, love and marriage, go together like a horse and carriage. This I tell you brother you can't have one without the other. Love and marriage, love and marriage, it's an institute you can't disparage. Ask the local gentry and they will say it's elementary. Try, try, try to separate them it's an illusion Try, try, try, and you will only come to this conclusion.

In the creation and production of The Complete Works of Stephen Sondheim [abridged], I showcased factual insight on one of the most prolific writers of musical theatre and infused it with comedy in order to educate and create appeal for Stephen Sondheim’s works, especially those lesser known, to a wider theatrical audience.

  • La Cage Aux Folles
Scenic rendering by scenic designer Adam Koch P.L.A.Y. Performance = Literature + Art + You Student Matinee Series 2019-2020 La Cage aux Folles Discovery Guide DEAR EDUCATOR: Thank you for choosing to bring your students to La Cage aux Folles. We know that each academic year you are presented with a multitude of thought provoking and exciting educational visits, performances, exhibitions, tours, and other off-site opportunities to enrich your students’ classroom curriculum and to inspire them as they continue to transform into young adults, sharing their bright minds and open hearts with the world around them. And, each year, there is less time and fewer funds available to participate in these experiences, which are deeply meaningful in so very many ways. We appreciate that you found La Cage aux Folles compelling and enriching, and chose to share this particular story - and all of its many messages - with your students as you start the 2019-2020 school year. Over the next several pages, we hope to highlight information that will prepare your students to invest in this production and give them a glimpse into the world of the play. In a phone conversation with Melissa Rain Anderson, director of Geva’s production of La Cage aux Folles, Melissa immediately expressed her desire to share this piece with Rochester’s student population (with whom she is very familiar from her years of playing Mrs. Cratchit in Geva’s A Christmas Carol, as well countless other roles on our stage, and directing several recent Geva productions). Melissa specifically highlighted inclusion and acceptance (of ourselves and of others), drag culture, LGBTQ+ illumination, family relationships, generational divides, identity, community, and the highly theatrical style of this musical as opportunities for students to connect with the characters and the story they’ll experience in the theatre.

  • A New Dawn for Hair by Richard Zoglin
Back to Article Click to Print Thursday, Jul. 31, 2008 A New Dawn for Hair By Richard Zoglin I never saw the original production of Hair, but I did catch the show a couple of years after its 1968 Broadway debut, when the touring company came to San Francisco. I was a student at Berkeley, and I would occasionally take a break from dodging tear gas in Sproul Plaza to usher for plays in the city. It was a good deal: students could spend half an hour helping fat cats find their way to their orchestra seats and, after the curtain went up, take any empty seat for free. Except that the night I saw Hair, the house was full, so the ushers had to sit on the aisle steps in the balcony. Which turned out to be the perfect way to experience the celebrated "tribal rock musical" that brought the communal spirit of the '60s youth culture to Broadway for the first time. It was the greatest night of my theater life. Well, maybe not quite. But allow a baby boomer his memories. (To be honest, I probably didn't call them fat cats either.) And allow Hair--or so even some professed fans of the show have pleaded--to remain in the mists of '60s nostalgia. After a flop 1977 Broadway revival and a not-much-more-successful 1979 movie version directed by Milos Forman, the feeling seemed to harden that the Age of Aquarius was over and trying to bring it back would look hopelessly out of touch, even silly, in this cynical new millennium.
