Starting out with a hugely popular movie (and Old Globe Theatre book) is both an amazing opportunity and a serious challenge. How do we now make this story work for the stage? Theatre is a vastly different ❖❖❖ art form than film and the wisest creators work to bring us something new and fresh. They use the convention of the imaginary "fourth wall" to breathe new life into well-known stories. Bringing an innovative twist T H E SAVA N N A H to a familiar story, a surprising new voice to a known character — these DISPUTATION are some of the key elements in the creation of this show, and you are Sep. 26 - Nov. 1, 2009 the first ones to see the journey from the creators’ vision to the The Old Globe Arena Stage at production fully-realized and on stage. Finally we wrap this creation the James S. Copley with stage sets, lights and costumes and if we've done our jobs well — Auditorium, you will suspend your disbelief and enter the fabulous world of The San Diego Museum of Art First Wives Club!

❖❖❖ You've been with us on this journey many times before, from in 1987 through today — over twenty shows in all. All I ask now is that you let us know what you think — if we have your email address DR. SEUSS’ you'll be hearing from us asking for your feedback. We really mean it HOW THE GRINCH STOLE when we say you’re a vital part of this process. With that said, I invite CHRISTMAS! you to enjoy and celebrate. Nov. 21 - Dec. 27, 2009 Old Globe Theatre

Dear Friends, I am thrilled to welcome you to the world premiere of the Brodway-bound The First Wives Club — A New Musical. As Chairman of the Board, I am especially proud that the Globe remains on a financial footing to fulfill our commitment of bringing our audiences “Broadway’s Best and San Diego’s Finest” — no easy accomplishment in an unsteady economic climate. Musicals by their nature are always the most expensive productions to mount, especially those built on a larger scale for an eventual home on Broadway. It is only through our donors’ extraordinary generosity to the Annual Fund, and those who make special Season and Production Sponsor gifts, that the Globe is able to keep the curtain rising on world premiere musicals making their debut here. Lou Spisto and senior management have worked hard to closely monitor expenses and cut where we can, while looking for additional income and fundraising opportunities throughout the year in order to safeguard the Theatre. We appreciate your understanding of our continuing need for additional funds in order to meet the inevitable rising costs of producing world-class theatre. It’s what you deserve, and what we expect of ourselves. My great thanks goes out to each and every one of you for your tremendous support of The Old Globe. And now, sit back and enjoy this exciting new production.

IN 1984, BUSINESS CONSULTANT ‘S MARRIAGE BEGINS TO DISSOLVE. . . SHE recalled coming to terms with the disintegration of her marriage: ''I come from a nice middle-class family where you don't get a divorce,'' says Ms. Goldsmith, the author of THE FIRST WIVES CLUB, ''But the next thought I had — honestly — 'Thank God I have my own money.' What she did not foresee was that her divorce proceedings would drag out for six years, eating up much of her cash, and that her husband would end up with both homes and their Jaguar in the bargain. At one point, she says, her capital shrank to less than $40,000 and she had to borrow money from a schoolteacher friend. Even so, she decided to take the plunge into a new vocation famed for its financial insecurity: fiction writing. ''I am not a gambler by nature, but I took a gamble on writing,'' she said. ''I always deeply loved books, and when your life falls apart, you figure, why not follow your bliss?''

The Supremes Who wrote the music and who wrote the lyrics? The Supremes Brian Holland: I mainly wrote the melodies The and tracks with Lamont, and Eddie wrote You're a Wonderful One the majority of the lyrics. Occasionally, How Sweet It Is Lamont and I would also come up with lyric ideas. (To Be Loved By You) Marvin Gaye Lamont Dozier: In the recording studio, 1965 Brian and I would split the room. Vandellas Eddie Holland: I would write these songs from my own experiences. The I Can't Help Myself most important thing was the feeling; does the lyric feel right? Is it interesting, and does it draw an emotional reaction? When Brian and (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch) The Four Tops Lamont first gave me the track to Baby Love, they already had this title. Something About You The Four Tops At first, I thought Baby Love was such a trite, simple title. But I eventually The Supremes realized that the title Baby Love worked very well with the music. The It's the Same Old Song The Four Tops title was simple, but it felt right. The Supremes DK: Was it a huge challenge to write the lyrics to so many tracks given to you by Brian and Lamont? 1966 Eddie Holland: They were so prolific that I did feel under the gun, having to (I'm a) Roadrunner Jr. Walker & come up with so many lyrics. I’ve never considered myself to be a quick writer, it often took me a long time to write the lyrics — two to three the All-Stars weeks. My World Is Empty He said he needed immediately a full lyric to be written to a track with the title I Hear A Symphony, and it Without You The Supremes had to be done by 11:00 am for a You Can't Hurry Love The Supremes vocal session with Diana (Ross). You Keep Me Hangin' On The Supremes Diana was on tour, and she could only be in town for one day to 1967 record her vocal. This meant that I Love is Here and Now had to stay up all night to write this You're Gone The Supremes lyric, and I’m not a night person!
