Pretty Little Liars Pretty Little Liars Pretty Little Liars Pretty Little Liars Three may keep a secret, if two of them are dead. Benjamin Franklin How It All Started Imagine it’s a couple of years ago, the summer between seventh and eighth grade. You’re tan from lying out next to your rock-lined pool, you’ve got on your new Juicy sweats (remember when everybody wore those?), and your mind’s on your crush, the boy who goes to that other prep school whose name we won’t mention and who folds jeans at Abercrombie in the mall. You’re eating your Cocoa Krispies just how you like ’em – doused in skim milk – and you see this girl’s face on the side of the milk carton. MISSING. She’s cute – probably cuter than you – and has a feisty look in her eyes. You think, Hmm, maybe she likes soggy Cocoa Krispies too. And you bet she’d think Abercrombie boy was a hottie as well. You wonder how someone so . well, so much like you went missing. You thought only girls who entered beauty pageants ended up on the sides of milk cartons. Well, think again. Aria Montgomery burrowed her face in her best friend Alison DiLaurentis’s lawn. ‘Delicious,’ she murmured. ‘Are you smelling the grass?’ Emily Fields called from behind her, pushing the door of her mom’s Volvo wagon closed with her long, freckly arm. ‘It smells good.’ Aria brushed away her pink-striped hair and breathed in the warm early-evening air. ‘Like summer.’ Emily waved ’bye to her mom and pulled up the blah jeans that were hanging on her skinny hips.

American Television, Drama by Nathan G. Tipton Encyclopedia Copyright © 2015, glbtq, Inc. Entry Copyright © 2002, glbtq, Inc. Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Despite a steady increase in the number of "big screen" queer characters and queerly-themed movies, the overt presence of gays and lesbians on the American small screen has been (and continues to be) far more limited. As Suzanna Danuta Walters has explained, while film has long dealt with gay subjects (albeit in often stereotyped or "tragic" ways), television's explicitly family-centric format appeared to mandate that glbtq persons were simply not a part of families that made up "typical" family audiences. After all, Walters continues, the intense intimacy and centrality of television in the personal space of family life provides a particular type of viewing experience that is fundamentally distinct from the relative anonymity of movie theaters. Not surprisingly, this family-centrism is displayed most prominently in programs shown by the five broadcast television networks, ABC, CBS, NBC, The CW, and Fox. These networks have historically been reticent about tackling homosexuality in its multifarious forms, preferring instead to leave these programming decisions to the proliferating number of cable networks. Still, long before the advent of cable, broadcast networks were tentatively exploring homosexuality by vicariously inserting into dramatic television series stereotypically gay characters. Â Early Representations From 1968 to 1974, as Edward Alwood has explained, homosexuals on television were recognizable in programs such as Kojak, M*A*S*H, Police Woman, and Hawaii Five-O because of their routine representation as limp-wristed, effeminate drag queens who walked with a swish and talked in high-pitched voices.

“YOU KNOW YOU LOVE ME”: SURVEILLANCE AND SPECTATORSHIP IN CONTEMPORARY TEEN GIRL TV A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Georgetown University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in English By Cara Dickason, B.A. Washington, DC April 24, 2015 Copyright 2015 by Cara Dickason All Rights Reserved ii “YOU KNOW YOU LOVE ME”: SURVEILLANCE AND SPECTATORSHIP IN CONTEMPORARY TEEN GIRL TV Cara Dickason, B.A. Thesis Advisor: Caetlin Benson-Allott, Ph.D. ABSTRACT Contemporary teen girl television shows about surveillance allow for an exploration of how girls constantly negotiate between their own positions as spectators and their objectification through surveillance and in media representation. From celebrity photo leaks to magazine covers on sexting, public discourse on girls, surveillance, and technology is riddled with anxiety about privacy, visibility, and sexuality. Mainstream media obsess over the many dangers besetting girls today, their vulnerability to exploitation by surveillance, and their corresponding need for protection and policing. Simultaneously, however, that same media insists both on girls’ constant visual and sexual objectification and their position as empowered, independent consumer- spectators. This thesis traces such themes of surveillance and spectatorship through Gossip Girl (2007-2012), Pretty Little Liars (2010-present), and Veronica Mars (2004-2007), three popular prime time teen dramas that centralize girls’ relationship to surveillance and visibility. I will explore how surveillance functions to objectify, value, and control teenage girls, and how female viewers’ relationship to the shows complicates and recapitulates those functions. These teen girl TV shows ultimately allow for the consideration of the complex ways that surveillance both exerts control over and affords agency within girls’ relationships to their own visibility.

Acknowledgements I have admired Professor Bilger since the first day I met her, during freshmen ori- entation. She has been a constant source of support and encouragement throughout my college career. Over the past year Professor Bilger’s dedicated involvement in my thesis has been invaluable. Through her many brilliant and helpful insights and comments, I was able to find my voice and create a piece of work that is profoundly important to me and that I am incredibly proud of. And of course, I would be remiss not to mention the multiple email threads about The Good Wife and Orange is the New Black that brought light into the many dark nights spent in the Poppa computer lab.
