Provisional data The number of passengers using public transport increases by 4.1% in January, as compared with the same month of the previous year. City transport increases by 5.1% in the annual rate and inter-city transport increases by 1.7% Evolution of passenger transport More than 376.6 million passengers used public transport in January, 4.1% more than in the same month of 2016. City transport increased by 5.1% in the annual rate and inter-city by 1.7%. Within the latter, air transport recorded the greatest increase, with a 5.8% rate. In order to contribute to the analysis and interpretation of data, the evolution of the monthly rate of public transport passengers in the last years is shown in the following chart. Metro transport increased by 6.5% with increases in all cities. Metro transport in Madrid presented the greatest increase (8.5%). In turn, bus transport decreased by 4.2%. The greatest increase was recorded in Valencia (8.2%) and the only decrease was recorded in Sevilla (-0.2%). The highest increases were recorded in Aragón (6.8%), Cataluña (6.5%) and Comunitat Valenciana (5.9%). PT – JANUARY 2017 (4/8) Inter-city transport More than 100.1 million passengers used inter-city transport in January, representing a 1.7% increase as compared to the same month of 2016. Air transport increased by 5.8%, rail transport increased by 1.7% and bus transport by 1.5%. Local distance passengers decreased by 1.3% for bus transport and by 1.8% for rail transport. Medium distance passengers increased 1.9% for bus transport and by 2.4% for rail transport. Finally, long distance passengers increased by1.5% for bus transport and no change was recorded for rail transport. Within the latter, AVE (high speed train) decreased by 0.2%. The number of special transport passengers decreased by 3.8%, reaching more than 28.5 million passengers. Within the latter, school transport increased by 5.4%, whilst work transport decreased by 1.0%. In turn, private transport increased by 4.3% as compared with the same month of 2016, with more than 9.4 million passengers.
