On 1st October Bernard Lauzanne, editor of Le Monde, publishes a drawing by Plantu (relating to the Vietman War) for the first time. 1974: Claude Julien, director of Le Monde Diplomatique commissions Plantu to produce a monthly drawing on the theme of the Third World. 1980: Plantu begins to work with the newspaper Phosphore - he continues to provide them with illustrations until 1986. 1982: André Laurens, director of Le Monde, and Claude Lamotte, editor, ask Plantu to make a drawing for the front page every Saturday. He takes part in the programme Droit de Réponse on TFI (French television). 1985: The director of publication, André Fontaine, established the practise of showing a Plantu drawing every day on the front page of the newspaper in order "to rivive the French tradition to political drawing" 1988: Winner of the Mumm Champagne Award 1989: Winner of the prize for black humour 1991: He joins the weekly magazine L'Express. At an exhibition of his work in Tunis in November of the same year Plantu meets Yasser Arafat and invites him to comment on his drawings.

Organized jointly by UNESCO, the Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the African Union, the international conference will be held at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa, and will focus on the role of the media in elections and de- mocracy (presentation of the event in the annex). A unique opportunity to promote the major role of press cartoonists in democracy and highlight the abuses they sometimes faces. At the invitation of the UNESCO, Cartooning for Peace takes part to this important moment of exchanges by proposing the following actions : Organization of a session in collaboration with the UNESCO «Cartooning for Peace and De- mocracy: artistic freedom and freedom of expression at the tip of the pen» Friday 3 May, 2:00 - 3:30, African Union Cartooning for Peace organizes a session bringing together press cartoonists from different coun- tries as part of an open discussion shape by testimonies from those whose work and violations make them true «barometers of freedom of expression». The session will also stress the concepts of press freedom and artistic freedom in democratic debate, mainly in an electoral context.     Jean Plantureux dit Plantu, est né le 23 mars 1951 à Paris. Il obtient son Bac en 1969 au Lycée Henry IV et, animé par sa passion, il décide de partir à Bruxelles apprendre le dessin à l’école Saint-Luc. De retour à Paris, Plantu travaille en tant que dessinateur pigiste. Ses dessins sont publiés dès 1970 ; il crée des illustrations pour Bonne Soirée, Pariscope, Télé 7 jours, Vingt ans, Génération, l’Étudiant et bien sûr, Le Monde. Le 1er octobre 1972, Bernard Lauzanne, rédacteur en chef du Monde, publie le premier dessin de Plantu, sur la guerre du Vietnam. En 1974, Claude Julien, directeur du Monde diplomatique, propose à Plantu de publier ses dessins. De 1980 à 1985, il dessine la Une du journal Phosphore. De 1981 à 1987, Plantu participe régulièrement à l’émission « Droit de réponse » diffusée sur TF1, jusqu’au jour où Francis Bouygues, propriétaire de la chaîne, licencie l’équipe de Michel Polac. 1985 marque un tournant dans sa carrière : André Fontaine, directeur du Monde, impose un dessin quotidien de Plantu à la Une du journal pour « rendre sa place à la tradition française des dessins politiques ». Depuis 1991, il collabore avec l'hebdomadaire L'Express qui lui consacre chaque semaine une page. 1 En 1991 et en 2002, deux thèses doctorales lui sont consacrées : « Les implicites culturels chez Plantu » par Maguy Pothier à la Sorbonne et « La signification politique des dessins de Plantu (1972-2000) » par Rémi Pézerat à l'Université Nancy-II. De nombreux prix ont été décernés à Plantu, entre autres les prix de la fondation Mumm en 1988, le Grand prix de l’humour noir Grandville en 1989 ainsi que le prix international de la caricature Gat Perich en 1996.
