4.3 INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY OF ETHNOBIOLOGY
First worldwide forum (funded by Darrell Posey and others in 1988 at the 1st International Congress of Ethnobiology held in Belem, Brazil) bringing together ethnoscientists, local communities, Indigenous Peoples, and environmentalists. The Declaration of Belem recognized that native peoples have been stewards of most of the Earth’s genetic resources and remain authorities on how their knowledge and resources should, or should not, be used; the declaration also set broad research ethical guidelines for ethnobiologists to ensure their work promotes the conservation of biological and cultural diversity, and the appropriate use of traditional knowledge.

4.4. RUBIA PROJECT
First ever research project funded by the European Commission focusing on cultural heritage related to plant knowledge and practices. It involved 8 research centres from the Netherland, Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Egypt, Algeria, and Morocco. The project aimed at documenting circum-Mediterranean traditional plant knowledge and practices and to propose concrete strategies for revitalizing this heritage.
