Carnivora from the Late Miocene Love Bone Bed of Florida
Bull. Fla. Mus. Nat. Hist. (2005) 45(4): 413-434 413 CARNIVORA FROM THE LATE MIOCENE LOVE BONE BED OF FLORIDA Jon A. Baskin1 Eleven genera and twelve species of Carnivora are known from the late Miocene Love Bone Bed Local Fauna, Alachua County, Florida. Taxa from there described in detail for the first time include the canid cf. Urocyon sp., the hemicyonine ursid cf. Plithocyon sp., and the mustelids Leptarctus webbi n. sp., Hoplictis sp., and ?Sthenictis near ?S. lacota. Postcrania of the nimravid Barbourofelis indicate that it had a subdigitigrade posture and most likely stalked and ambushed its prey in dense cover. The postcranial morphology of Nimravides (Felidae) is most similar to the jaguar, Panthera onca. The carnivorans strongly support a latest Clarendonian age assignment for the Love Bone Bed. Although the Love Bone Bed local fauna does show some evidence of endemism at the species level, it demonstrates that by the late Clarendonian, Florida had become part of the Clarendonian chronofauna of the midcontinent, in contrast to the higher endemism present in the early Miocene and in the later Miocene and Pliocene of Florida. Ángeles Álvarez-Sierra, and Jorge Morales ABSTRACT We re-evaluated the Austrian material for Hadrictis fricki Pia, 1939, from the local- ities Wien XII-Altmannsdorf and Gaiselberg (MN9, Vallesian, Late Miocene), conclud- ing that Hadrictis can be considered as a synonymy of Eomellivora Zdansky, 1924; we therefore named it as Eomellivora fricki. This species is one of the earliest representa- tives of the genus, together with E. piveteaui Ozansoy, 1965. Our phylogenetic analy- ses indicate that Eomellivora forms a monophyletic group, establishing the sister clade of the large and derived Late Miocene Ekorus ekakeran. Eomellivora fricki shows a primitive dental morphology and is the largest species of the genus. This species shows the complexity of the genus Eomellivora, in which large and small species coex- isted since the beginning of the Late Miocene. Alberto Valenciano. Steppan Abstract.ÐThe effects of specialization on subsequent morphological evolution are poorly under- stood. Specialization has been implicated in both adaptive radiations that result from key inno- vations and evolutionary ``dead ends,'' where specialized characteristics appear to limit subse- quent evolutionary options. Despite much theoretical debate, however, empirical studies remain infrequent. In this paper, we use sister-group comparisons to evaluate the effect of morphological specialization to a particular ecological niche, hypercarnivory, on subsequent taxonomic and mor- phological diversity. Six sets of sister groups are identi®ed in which one clade exhibits hypercar- nivorous characteristics and the sister clade does not. Comparison results are summed across the categories ``hypercarnivore'' and ``sister group.'' We also evaluate whether increasing degrees of specialization are correlated with decreasing phenotypic variation. Results presented here indicate that specialization to hypercarnivory has no effect on taxonomic diversity, but a strong effect on subsequent morphological diversity related to the jaws and dentition, and that increasing special- ization does not correlate with morphological diversity except in the most specialized saber- toothed taxa, which exhibit higher variance than less specialized morphs, possibly due to selection on other characteristics. ABSTRACT Taxon ranges of larger mammalian carnivores can be grouped into seven temporal intervals during the later Cenozoic. These intervals are of varied duration and seem to correspond to periodic faunal reorganizations that accompanied the progressive climatic deterioration occur- ring from the late Eocene to the Pleistocene. Recent oxygen isotope records from deep-sea cores serve as proxy for the pattern of global climate during the Cenozoic and compare reasonably well with the large carnivore intervals. -

Evidence for independent acquisition of aquatic specializations in pinnipeds (seals, sea lions, and walruses): insights from study of the phylogenetic position, locomotor behaviour and description of the stem pinniped, Puijila darwini by Ryan Paterson A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Earth Sciences Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2017, Ryan Paterson Abstract Monophyly of pinnipeds (seals, sea lions, and walruses) is well-established. However, it is difficult to reconcile a monophyletic origin of pinnipeds with the disparate locomotory modes and associated skeletal morphologies observed between the extant families. In this study, the skeletal anatomy of Puijila darwini, a key putative stem pinniped from Canada’s High Arctic, is fully described. A biomechanical analysis, using functional limb indices of extant carnivorans to predict locomotory modes in extinct taxa, confirms the aquatic adaptations of Puijila, and identifies it as a forelimb-dominated swimmer. Phylogenetic analyses of molecular and morphological data in isolation recover Puijila as a stem pinniped, and provide strong support for pinniped monophyly. However, a phylogenetic analysis combining molecular and morphological data together recovers an unconventional topology, suggesting the molecular and morphological data are incongruent.
