Göhlich4 Received: 23 March 2018 /Revised: 4 June 2018 /Accepted: 18 September 2018 # The Author(s) 2018 Abstract The Carnivora (Mammalia) yielded in the coal mine Gračanica in Bosnia and Herzegovina are composed of the caniform families Amphicyonidae (Amphicyon giganteus), Ursidae (Hemicyon goeriachensis, Ursavus brevirhinus) and Mustelidae (indet.) and the feliform family Percrocutidae (Percrocuta miocenica). The site is of middle Miocene age and the biostratigraphical interpretation based on molluscs indicates Langhium, correlating Mammal Zone MN 5. The carnivore faunal assemblage suggests a possible assignement to MN 6 defined by the late occurrence of A. giganteus and the early occurrence of H. goeriachensis and P. miocenica. Despite the scarcity of remains belonging to the order Carnivora, the fossils suggest a diverse fauna including omnivores, mesocarnivores and hypercarnivores of a meat/bone diet as well as Carnivora of small (Mustelidae indet.) to large size (A. giganteus). Faunal similarities can be found with Prebreza (Serbia), Mordoğan, Çandır, Paşalar and Inönü (all Turkey), which are of comparable age. The absence of Felidae is worthy of remark, but could be explained by the general scarcity of carnivoran fossils. Gračanica records the most eastern European occurrence of H. goeriachensis and the first occurrence of A. giganteus outside central Europe except for Namibia (Africa). The Gračanica Carnivora fauna is mostly composed of European elements. Keywords Amphicyon . Hemicyon . -

Chapter 9 Carnivora (Mammalia, Felidae, Canidae, and Mustelidae) From the Earliest Hemphillian Screw Bean Local Fauna, Big Bend National Park, Brewster County, Texas MARGARET SKEELS STEVENS1 AND JAMES BOWIE STEVENS2 ABSTRACT The Screw Bean Local Fauna is the earliest Hemphillian fauna of the southwestern United States. The fossil remains occur in all parts of the informal Banta Shut-in formation, nowhere very fossiliferous. The formation is informally subdivided on the basis of stepwise ®ning and slowing deposition into Lower (least fossiliferous), Middle, and Red clay members, succeeded by the valley-®lling, Bench member (most fossiliferous). Identi®ed Carnivora include: cf. Pseudaelurus sp. and cf. Nimravides catocopis, medium and large extinct cats; Epicyon haydeni, large borophagine dog; Vulpes sp., small fox; cf. Eucyon sp., extinct primitive canine; Buisnictis chisoensis, n. sp., extinct skunk; and Martes sp., marten. B. chisoensis may be allied with Spilogale on the basis of mastoid specialization. Some of the Screw Bean taxa are late survivors of the Clarendonian Chronofauna, which extended through most or all of the early Hemphillian. The early early Hemphillian, late Miocene age attributed to the fauna is based on the Screw Bean assemblage postdating or- eodont and predating North American edentate occurrences, on lack of de®ning Hemphillian taxa, and on stage of evolution. Nargolwalla Doctor of Philosophy Department of Anthropology University of Toronto 2009 Abstract The origin and diversification of great apes and humans is among the most researched and debated series of events in the evolutionary history of the Primates. A fundamental part of understanding these events involves reconstructing paleoenvironmental and paleogeographic patterns in the Eurasian Miocene; a time period and geographic expanse rich in evidence of lineage origins and dispersals of numerous mammalian lineages, including apes. Traditionally, the geographic origin of the African ape and human lineage is considered to have occurred in Africa, however, an alternative hypothesis favouring a Eurasian origin has been proposed. This hypothesis suggests that that after an initial dispersal from Africa to Eurasia at ~17Ma and subsequent radiation from Spain to China, fossil apes disperse back to Africa at least once and found the African ape and human lineage in the late Miocene. The purpose of this study is to test the Eurasian origin hypothesis through the analysis of spatial and temporal patterns of distribution, in situ evolution, interprovincial and intercontinental dispersals of Eurasian terrestrial mammals in response to environmental factors. Using the NOW and Paleobiology databases, together with data collected through survey and excavation of middle and late Miocene vertebrate localities in Hungary and Romania, taphonomic bias and sampling completeness of Eurasian faunas are assessed. -

Profsoyuznaya 123, Moscow, 117868 Russia Received October 20, 1999 Abstract—A lower jaw containing complete tooth rows of the earliest hapalodectid mesonychian, Hapalo- dectes dux sp. nov., is described from the Upper Paleocene of Tsagan-Khushu, Mongolia (Naran Bulak Forma- tion, Zhigden Member). The new species is smaller than the Middle Eocene H. serus and larger than the Early Eocene H. hetangensis. The lower molars of H. dux have distinct metaconid, protocristid, rudimentary hypo- conulid, and entoconid; M2 and M3 are equal in size. These characters suggest that H. dux is the most primitive species of the genus Hapalodectes. -

Marine Mammal Commission 4340 East-West Highway, Room 905 Bethesda, MD 20814 29January 2007 Mr. Kyle Baker National Marine Fisheries Service 263 13th Avenue, South St. Petersburg, FL 33701 Dear Mr. Baker: The Marine Mammal Commission, in consultation with its Committee of Scientific Advisors on Marine Mammals, has reviewed the National Marine Fisheries Service’s 29 November 2006 Federal Register notice announcing its intent to conduct a review of the Caribbean monk seal, Monachus tropicalis, under the Endangered Species Act and requesting information on the species’ status. We have reviewed our files and, with great regret, we have concluded that the species is extinct and should be removed from the list of endangered and threatened species. Fossil and archeological evidence, along with sighting records, indicate that the species once occurred from the southeastern United States through the Bahamas and the Caribbean Sea. A review of those records by Rice (1973) concluded that the last authoritative sighting was of a small colony of animals at Seranilla Banks between Jamaica and the Yucatan Peninsula in 1952. A few other unconfirmed sightings were reported from the 1950s into the 1970s, but at least some of those were reported to involve escaped California sea lions (Gunter 1968 cited in Rice 1973). Although the species may have been extinct when the Endangered Species Act was passed in 1973, the Marine Mammal Commission wrote to the National Marine Fisheries Service on 26 January 1977 recommending that the Caribbean monk seal be listed as “endangered” under the Endangered Species Act and “depleted” under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. -
