Hunt, Jr. Robert Skolnick Joshua Kaufman In 1981 University of Nebraska paleontologists came upon an unexpected concentration of carnivore dens at Agate Fossil Beds National Monument in north west Nebraska. The discovery of bones of Miocene beardogs, mustelids, and canids in their burrows was unparalleled and marked an exceptional event in the fossil record. Survey and excavation (1981–1990) established that six species of carnivores had, over time, occupied the dens with traces of their prey: ju venile and adult oreodonts, camels, and a neonatal rhinoceros. At least nine individuals of the wolf-like beardog Daphoenodon superbus, the most common carnivore, were identified from remains of young, mature, and aged individuals that included in one den an adult female and her juvenile male offs pring. The carnivores found together in the dens represent a moment in time—the oldest carnivore den community yet discovered with remains of pred- ators, their prey, and their ecology in evidence. Dated at 22 to 23 Ma (million years), the den complex pro vided scientists with the oldest documented evidence of carnivore denning behavior. Baskin1 Eleven genera and twelve species of Carnivora are known from the late Miocene Love Bone Bed Local Fauna, Alachua County, Florida. Taxa from there described in detail for the first time include the canid cf. Urocyon sp., the hemicyonine ursid cf. Plithocyon sp., and the mustelids Leptarctus webbi n. sp., Hoplictis sp., and ?Sthenictis near ?S. lacota. Postcrania of the nimravid Barbourofelis indicate that it had a subdigitigrade posture and most likely stalked and ambushed its prey in dense cover. The postcranial morphology of Nimravides (Felidae) is most similar to the jaguar, Panthera onca. The carnivorans strongly support a latest Clarendonian age assignment for the Love Bone Bed. Although the Love Bone Bed local fauna does show some evidence of endemism at the species level, it demonstrates that by the late Clarendonian, Florida had become part of the Clarendonian chronofauna of the midcontinent, in contrast to the higher endemism present in the early Miocene and in the later Miocene and Pliocene of Florida.     Oldest mephitine cranium and its implications for the origin of skunks MIECZYSEAW WOLSAN Wolsan, M. 1999. Oldest mephitine cranium and its implications for the origin of skunks. -Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 44,2,223-230. -- Recent molecular studies have recognized the skunks (Mephitinae) to be the sister taxon of a clade comprising the Procyonidae and Mustelidae. These findings are inconsistent with the traditional placement of the skunks among mustelids, which is based on mor- phological evidence from extant taxa. This paper reports on a well-preserved cranium of a young individual, recovered from the middle Miocene deposits (MN 7+8, about 11-12 Ma) of Steinheim am Albuch, Germany. The fossil is the holotype of Palaeo- mephitis steinheimensis Jager, 1839, which is here recognized as a senior subjective syn- onym of Trochotherium cyamoides Fraas, 1870 (consequently, Palaeomephitis Jager, 1839 is a senior subjective synonym of Trochotherium Fraas, 1870). The specimen is identified as the oldest and most primitive mephitine cranium known to date, approach- ing the primitive morphology for the Mephitinae. It exhibits a combination of mephitine (accessory middle-ear chamber, lateral swelling of the squamosal) and mustelid (mus- telid suprameatal fossa) synapomorphies,corroborating the view that skunks are derived from a mustelid ancestor. Its auditory bulla shows a slightly inflated and relatively large caudal entotympanic, which indicates that the uninflated and relatively small caudal entotympanics of adult mephitines, as well as their hypertrophied ectotympanics, are not primitive (as hitherto assumed) but derived, providing a synapomorphy that supports a sister-group relationship between the Mephitinae and Lutrinae. Collazo December 13, 2010 50-40 million years ago (Eocene): The oldest known camel is Protylopus, appeared 40-50 million years ago (Eocene) in North America. It was the size of a rabbit and lived in the forest. Later, camels spread to the savanna and increased their size. In Oligocene, 35 million years ago, Poebrotherium was the size of a roe deer but already resembled a camel. 45-38 million years ago: The ancestors of the modern camel lived in North America. The ancestors of the lamas and camels appear to have diverged sometime in the Eocene epoch. 24-12 million years ago: Various types of camels evolved. Stenomylus was a gazelle like camel. Alticamelus, which lived 10 to 2 million years ago, had a long neck similar to a giraffe. Procamelus, just 1.2 m tall (like a modern Lama) evolved in the Camelus genus (to which modern camels belong). Lamas migrated to South America, and all the camels in North America died out. Once in Asia, camels migrated through Eastern Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. 3-2 million years ago: Camelus passed from North America in Asia through Behringia 2-3 million years ago. 2 million years ago: The ancestors of lama and vicuña passed into the Andes coming from North America. The last camel surviving the cradle of the camel evolution, North America, was Camelops hesternus, which disappeared 12-10,000 years ago together with the whole mega fauna of North America (mammoths, mastodons, giant sloth and saber toothed cats).

Species range in size from ,5kgto.200 kg. Among the largest amphicyonids are Old and New World species of the genus Amphicyon: A. giganteus in Europe (18±;15? Ma) and Africa, A. ingens in North America (15.9±;14.2 Ma). Amphicyon ®rst appears in the Oligocene of western Europe, surviving there until the late Miocene.
