Epson Pearl River Delta Scoping Study EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Introduction Freshwater ecosystems are considered amongst the world’s most endangered ecosystems. The freshwater crisis facing the world today is one of the most serious global environmental challenges to both man and biodiversity. Freshwater issues in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) in Guangdong, China are considered to be a significant challenge to the future development of the region. The objectives of this report are to better understand the complex linkages among the various threats to freshwater biodiversity, and their causes, in order to identify opportunities and strategies for reducing these threats through future conservation actions in the region.
