RUGBY CLUB HISTORY Welcome to Hove Rec for the sixth game of this season - and we are still seeking our first win. Today’s visitors are Tottonians - from Totton in Hampshire, west of Southampton. Founded in 1962, the club has made steady but almost uniformly upward progress since being formed in 1962; this is their fourth season in London One South and they have made a steady start with two victories and three defeats so far, all of them close results. They run four senior sides, including a vets, every Saturday as well as a thriving mini and youth. I believe this is the first league fixture between the two sides. I have personal memories of playing against them back in the early 1970s when they regularly went on Richard Hopkins tour to the Easter rugby festival held at Lowestoft and Yarmouth rugby club – I don’t remember too much about the rugby but I gained a strong impression that they were a very convivial group – and I expect that will be confirmed today! Welcome to Ken, Graham, Julie and Geoff who will be joining us for lunch. Last week we played well at Westcombe Park for most of the game – but paid a heavy price for conceding three poor tries in the second quarter, resulting in a heavy half time deficit of 29-0. We dominated the second half in which the scoring was 14-5 in our favour, mainly thanks to excellent set piece work by the forwards, but were only able to breach a strong home defence twice. Overall, though, the performance was encouraging and there is no doubt that the team is improving and should continue to do. Special mention should be made of Charlie Knight, Toby Ward and Tyler Hooper for their committed and brave performances. Charlie and Tyler were playing Colts rugby last season and it is a big step up to London One South; all credit to them for making it. Off the field, I sense there is a risk of the club falling victim to its own success in attracting playing membership. The numbers of teams - men’s, women’s, boy’s and girl’s – has placed strain on both physical infrastructure and the volunteer base. In the rest of the season it will be important for us to develop a clear fundraising plan in order to raise the funds for the development of the clubhouse and the changing rooms, for which we now have planning permission – and also to build on and refresh our volunteer base in order to safeguard the future. We need to be doing this together as one club and one family. Have a great afternoon. Westcombe Park, our hosts last week, are a semi-pro team with a fully paid squad. They have numerous coaches, including an ex Chichester Director of Rugby. Our performance was very much as expected. For long periods we were a Geoff Pollard match for Park. However, there always seem to be those moments in a game when our opponents change gear and outplay us. This week’s games. League position in brackets: Chichester(12) v Dartfordians (10). Intriguing game. As I have mentioned in other missives Dartfordians were the best side in L2SE last year but are struggling in L1S. My history with Chichester suggests they should win this, but if they don’t we will learn much about our West Sussex acquaintances (can’t bring myself to call them friends) Chobham(8) v Medway(2). After comfortably beating us in the first game Chobham have been sliding down the league. Tottonians, today’s visitors, beat them last week. Medway charge on, unbeaten so far, and I fully expect that record to be maintained. Cobham(6) v Westcombe Park(5). Both of these teams have beaten us. Of the two I think Park looked more impressive but, good enough to win in stockbroker belt? Sticking my neck out, I think Park will do it. London Cornish(9) v Camberley(3). Camberley comfortably won L2SW last season and seem to have made an easy start in this league. Brighton beat them on opening day, but after that, they have scored some big wins. Don’t see that changing today. Sevenoaks(4) v Brighton(1). Viewing these two in the mirror of their performances at the Rec this should be a home win. Sevenoaks beat us by a bigger margin than Brighton managed and we never really looked good against them. On the other hand, we played well against the lot from over the hill. Brighton unbeaten run to end. Thurrock(11) v Havant(13). Thurrock have won twice already this season and should rack up a third win today. Havant share the dubious honour with us of a zero in the win column. They are only above us on bonus points. Hove(14) v Tottonians(7). Before last week many of us were eying this fixture as our first possible win. Trouble is last weekend Tottonians beat Chobham and moved into the top half of the table. So far all of our games (the opening day apart) have been against top half teams and we have struggled to deliver an eighty-minute game. If we can keep concentration, I think we will win.
