december 2020/január 2021 novinky zživot a kultúraradnice trnavy foto: Matúš Koprda mesto trnava ročník XXXI číslo 11/12 nepredajné! editorial Pavol Tomašovič Zmena priorít Posledné roky bola hybnou silou nášho myslenia, túžob i predstáv zmena. S rastúcimi číslami chorých i mŕtvych nás čoraz intenzívnejšie začali napĺňať obavy a strach. Odkryli tú časť života, ktorú sme v čase plánovania a nádejí prehliadali. Odkryli našu krehkosť i zraniteľnosť. • The Beginnings of the Prešov Greek Catholic Eparchy During the Episcopacy of Its First Bishop Gregor Tarkovič1
THE BEGINNINGS OF THE PREŠOV GREEK CATHOLIC EPARCHY DURING THE EPISCOPACY OF ITS FIRST BISHOP GREGOR TARKOVIČ1 Jaroslav Coranič DOI: 10.17846/CL.2020.13.2.176-186 Abstract: CORANIČ, Jaroslav. The Beginnings of the Prešov Greek Catholic Eparchy During the Episcopacy of Its First Bishop Gregor Tarkovič. The Greek Catholic Eparchy of Prešov was canonically erected by Pope Pius VII on September 22, 1818. From its inception until 1841, the eparchy was administered by Bishop Gregor Tarkovič upon whose shoulders rested a great responsibility for the organization of the newly erected eparchy. Over the course of his episcopacy, Bishop Tarkovič secured the establishment of all essential eparchial institutions: the bishop’s office, the Chapter, the eparchial archives, the library, etc. Bishop Tarkovič also greatly contributed to resolution of several economic and financial issues concerning the overall administration of his eparchy. Above all, worth noting is his effort in obtaining benefices and establishment of proper eparchial funds. The article introduces the journey of Bishop Tarkovič that was dominated by his undying love for learning, diligence and yearning for solitary and ascetic life. Despite this composition of his being, Bishop Tarkovič will be remembered for his remarkable achievements in laying sound foundations for the future direction and development of the Greek Catholic Eparchy of Prešov. Keywords: Greek Catholic Church, Metropolitan Church sui iuris, Greek Catholic Eparchy of Prešov, Relata semper, Gregor Tarkovič In 2018, the Greek Catholic Metropolitan Church sui iuris in Slovakia celebrated the bicentenary of the establishment of the Prešov Eparchy. Elevated to the archeparchy today, the historical Eparchy of Prešov constitutes an institutional foundation for all Greek Catholics living in the territory of Slovakia.

  • Memoirs of a Hungarian Lady 1
MEMOIRS OF A HUNGARIAN LADY. BY THERESA PULSZKY. A HISTORICAL INTRODUCTION, BY FRANCIS PULSZKY. IN TWO VOLUMES. VOL. I. LONDON: HENRY COLBURN, PUBLISHER, GREAT MARLBOROUGH STREET. 1850. LONDON: Printed by Schulze and Co., 13, Poland Street. TO THE MOST NOBLE THE MARCHIONESS OF LANSDOWNE. WHEN I first had the happiness of meeting you in the year 1841, my girlish enthusiasm for England attracted your attention. You en- couraged me to tell you all that filled my heart and occupied my mind, and kindly listened to the attempted development of my young ideas. The sanguinary events of the last year have driven me and my family from our country; but the good land that is beyond the sea/' the mighty Queen of Ocean, has granted us a hospitable asylum, to which your generous kindness welcomed me. You have again encouraged me to repeat my tale, no longer of the bright pictures then radiantly IV before my mind; but of the solemn tragedy, which has horrified Eastern Europe. Though I never mixed in politics, I have con- sidered it my duty, to give a simple account of what I have seen and heard. Perhaps this un- adorned narrative may help to rectify some erro- neous notions spread abroad respecting Hungary. I, of course, cannot assume to give in the follow- ing pages any new or striking view of the events which have passed before the eyes of Europe; but your Ladyship will certainly recognize the accents of truth, even when awkwardly expressed in a lan- guage more familiar to my admiration than to my pen.

  • Community Life of Slovaks in Budapest Between 1850 and 1875 Ľuboš KAČÍREK
ARTICLES 68 Community Life of Slovaks in Budapest between 1850 and 1875 Ľuboš KAČÍREK Community Life of Slovaks in Budapest between 1850 and 1875 Ľuboš KAČÍREK Abstract This work seeks to provide a picture of the Slovak community in the capital of the Kingdom of Hungary from the period between the conclusion of the 1848/1849 revolution and the onset of the social and political upheavals it brought to the suppression of Slovak national ambitions and all related activities in 1875. They culminated in the closing of Slovak secondary schools and Matica slovenská, as well as the collapse of the New School of the Slovak national movement which attempted reconciliation and cooperation with the Hungarian government. Keywords 19th century, Slovak Community, social movement organization, Budapest Introduction The city we know as Budapest – formerly the capital of the Kingdom of Hungary and now the capital of Hungary – officially came into being in 1873 as an amalgamation of the cities of Buda, Óbuda and Pest. In Slovak, the three cities were known before the union as either Pešťbudín or Pešť-Budín (where Budín is the Slovak name for Buda), although the current term Budapešť can be found in the Slovak press before 1873. In the Slovak public’s eye, Pešťbudín was always a foreign city unfriendly to Slovaks and this seemed to be doubly true in the years 1874–1875. Much of our current knowledge of the daily life of the Slovak community in Pešťbudín in the period between the late 1850s and early 1870s is based on two memoires published in the early 1920s in the magazine Slovenské pohľady which established a ‘canon’ view of Pešťbudín in this period.1 It must, however, be kept in mind that these memoires came out over fifty years after the event and their description of contemporary personages tends to be skewed by their future actions in favor of – or in opposition to – the national movement 1 BELLA, Ján Pravdoľub: Niektoré rozpomienky z rokov 1858–64, in: Slovenské pohľady, 38, 1922, 9, 520–523; KLEIN, Belo: Pred polstoletím.

  • Hungarian Relations, Catholicism and Christian Democracy
Originalni naučni rad Michaela Moravčíková 1 UDK: 327(437.6:439) 323.1(=511.141)(437.6) 272(437.6+439) SLOVAK – HUNGARIAN RELATIONS, CATHOLICISM AND CHRISTIAN DEMOCRACY Consequences of the Treaty of Trianon In 1995 Václav Havel stated that the paths of Czechs and Germans are intertwined. One year later Rudolf Chmel, a former (and the last) Czechoslovak Ambassador to Hungary expanded on this idea that it is also true for Slovaks and Hungarians. And this is the reason why the issue of historic Slovak-Hungarian reconciliation is urgent and, in fact, fated2. The Peace Treaty of Trianon, signed in 1920, and the Treaty of Paris, signed in 1947, which replaced the Treaty of Trianon3, are considered by the Hungarians unjust and seen very neuralgic points in the history of Hungary. When the Treaty of Versailles was signed, Hungary, a mid-size European country, became one of the small states of Central Europe. In Budapest on 4 June 1920 all newspapers were printed with a black frame, the flags were placed at half-mast, usual life stopped and protest meetings took place. Following the mourning ceremonies in the basilica and other churches, the national assembly started its session. The chairman of the House of Parliament István Rakovszky in his speech, inter alia, passed the message to the “citizens of separated parts of the country”: “After a thousand years of living together, we have to separate, but not forever. From this moment all our thoughts, every beat of our hearts, day and night, will aim to reunite us, in all our former glory, all our former grandeur.

E-Theologos, Vol. 4, No. 1 DOI 10.2478/etheo-2013-0003 Christianity, Society and History to 20th Century in Slavonic Territory (Slovakia) doc. PhDr. ThDr. Daniel Slivka, PhD. University of Prešov in Prešov, Greek Catholic Theological Faculty ul. biskupa Gojdi ča 2, 080 01 Prešov Ancient History in Slavonic Territory Since the early history, Slovakia situated in the central Europe is con- sidered to be a Christian country. Her foundations are built by Christian values originating in the Jewish-Christian tradition. The ancestors of the Slavs were pagans who worshiped many gods and goddesses. These pe- ople worshiped predominately gods derived from their faith in natural elements and seasons, as for example the god of thunder and lightning known as Perun and the goddess of winter called Morena. Even nowadays people using slang tend to say “Perun struck” meaning that there was a strike of lightning or thunder. Moreover, in spring TV news often offer reportages dealing with folklore traditions which are connected with the farewell to winter. Based on this custom, lads and girls carry an effigy of Morena through a whole village. At the end of the village they set the effi- gy on fire and drown it in river. This custom closes the winter season and opens the spring one. The origin of Christianity in the area of today’s Slovakia goes back to the period of 2 nd and 3 rd century CE. 1 At first, Christianity was brought by Roman soldiers who served in this area. There is even a story about these soldiers that connects them with the victory column of Marcus Aurelius placed in Rome.
