The Award will be presented to the Village at the Federation’s annual awards dinner scheduled to be held on Thursday, June 7 . The Village of Ossining Architectural Design Guidelines is a comprehensive document containing architectural design recommendations and best practices for commercial and residential structures within the Village. The Guidelines are the product of collaboration between Stephen Tilly Architects, Inc of Dobbs Ferry and the Village Planning Board, Zoning Board of Appeals, and Historic Preservation Commission, along with Village Planning Department staff. The Guidelines focus on the Village's Sparta and Downtown historic districts, the residential neighborhoods surrounding these two districts, and the commercial corridors located on Routes 9 and Route 133. If your property is not located within these areas, you will still find the recommendations to be useful in planning your project. To view the Village of Ossining Architectural Design Guidelines go to the Village website at www.villageofossining.org and click on the tab on the left marked Architectural Guidelines.

The Village Board is seeking applicants to serve on the Historic Preservation Commission, the Board of Ethics. Kudos and thanks to the Ossining High School Band: The Central Committee of Organized Veterans of Ossining and the Ossining Boat and Canoe Club would like to thank the OHS Band for the excellent performance by members who volunteered at the May 20 th veteran’s ceremony and commissioning day. Each spring the Central Committee pays tribute to those lost at sea during a ceremony at the Ossining Boat and Canoe Club. A wreath is placed in the river by a local Boy Scout from a club member’s boat, the veterans provide a gun salute and taps, and local elected officials with club members are present to help the Central Committee honor those who served our country. The band members’ performance was flawless and we are very grateful for their support in paying tribute to our veterans. We hope everyone will be present on Memorial Day with our OHS band and the Central Committee to honor all those who have served our country.

Taconic Opera Presents Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle Finishing off its 2011-2012 season and continuing its tradition of presenting an annual choral masterwork by an opera composer, Taconic Opera will be offering two performances of Petite Messe Solenelle by Gioacchino Rossini, the composer of The Barber of Seville, Cinderella (La Cenerentola) , and many others. Completed in his later years and one of very few works he offered to the public during those years, he describes with characteristic wit why he chose to write a sacred mass: "Good God— behold completed this poor little Mass… You know well, I was born for comic opera. Little science, a little heart, that is all. So may you be blessed, and grant me Paradise!” The Emperor Napolean found the mass to be neither little (Petite), solemn (Solennelle) or even liturgical. Audiences find this controversial but exciting work fascinating, unique, and a true pleasure for the ear and the heart to experience. Performances are at the Ossining United Methodist Church , I Emwilton Pl., Ossining, NY, on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at 7:30pm , and Sunday, June 3, 2012 at 3:00pm . Tickets are $27 with generous discounted prices for seniors ($20) and especially students ($15). For information, tickets or directions: call 1-855-886 -7372 or email [email protected] or visit www.taconicopera.org . Currently in its 14th season and the recipient of the 2012 ArtsWestchester Arts Organization of the Year Award, Taconic Opera is the longest operating professional opera company in Westchester County that offers a full season of events. In addition to mainstage operas and concert performances, the company provides in-school educational programs, offers free performances of fully-staged operas to school children, and provides free lectures at public facilities. Taconic Opera is one of only a handful of local companies to have received a prestigious National Endowment for the Arts Grant for Artistic Excellence.

CONCERT BYCOMMUNITY SINGING GROUP “OLD MILL SINGERS” On Friday and Saturday evenings, June 8 th and 9 th , 2012 , the Old Mill Singers will be performing “Come Fly Away with the Old Mill Singers” at Ossining High School. Our chorus will be singing songs about far away places, such as “Africa,” “Tuxedo Junction,” “Chicago,” and “Orinoco Flow.” A largely amateur chorus, The Old Mill Singers tackle most styles of music – pop, jazz, Broadway, folk, ethnic, novelty acts and even some original numbers composed by our members. We may perform classical pieces, but unlike most local choral groups our focus is on lighter fare. Besides songs done by our full chorus, we’ll have solos, duets, and our always popular children’s act. They have fun practicing and singing together, and the fun crosses the footlights to our audience. Show time is at 8:00pm both Friday and Saturday evenings. Tickets – which will be available at the door and from our members - are $20 for adults and $15 for senior citizens and children. There is convenient free parking, handicapped accessibility, free refreshments, and a cash prize raffle. The Old Mill Singers was founded 40 years ago as the Phelps Arts Society to provide music for hospital patients during the holiday season, and continues to perform in nursing homes, at Rosary Hill, at community events, and at holiday time at the Met Life Building to entertain commuters as they head for Grand Central Terminal. Twice each year, in December and June, public performances are given at Ossining High School. We now have about sixty active members, men and women of all ages and from all walks of life. Gary Bratt has been our director for most of the forty years we’ve been around. See them on the web at www.oldmillsingers.org and visit them on Facebook. They are always on the lookout for new members; if you like to sing, contact their Membership Chairman Sharon Brana at [email protected] or 914 762-3765

Collegium Westchester Announces the Final Concert of Its 2011-2012 Season Collegium Westchester Chorus and Orchestra presents the final concert of its 2011-2012 season of music by “Titans of our Musical Heritage” at 8pm on Saturday, June 9, 2012 , at the First Presbyterian Church of Ossining. The concert day general rehearsal at the same location is open to the public from 3.30-6.30pm. Admission to both the rehearsal and the concert is free, but contributions are always gratefully accepted. Previous concerts of the season explored “19th Century Titans” and “18th and 20th Century Titans,” while this concert explores "Bridges Between Centuries". It will feature music in which masters of a given century look backward or forward to ideas of past or future centuries. The two 19th century pieces on the program look back to earlier times: Mendelssohn's Tu es Petrus , which looks back to Renaissance counterpoint of the 16th century, and Brahms' Third Symphony, which looks back to Baroque and Classical structural ideals of the 18th century. The program will also include the first performance of selections of the late Peter Lieberson's The World in Flower since the work's 2009 New York Philharmonic premiere. The World in Flower looks both backwards in time to a more understandable tonal language, and forwards in time toward a universal understanding between people of different cultural backgrounds. Lieberson based the work on texts about love from an unusually diverse collection of sources: the Inuit poet Uvavnuk, the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, and the medieval French Christian author Marguerite Porete, as well as prayers of the Navajo. Collegium Westchester Chorus and Orchestra is modeled on the 17th century Collegium Musicum in that it combines active professional and accomplished avocational musicians into one ensemble, but it performs music from the 17th century to the present. Its instrumentalists and singers are drawn from Westchester County and elsewhere in the New York City metropolitan area, and include participants with leading orchestras and choruses in New York and throughout the world. Its music director, Westchester resident Eric Kramer, has worked as a conductor in Europe and the US, with groups including the Berlin Sinfonietta, Opéra National de Lyon, Budapest Festival Orchestra, and Bronx Opera. One additional note of interest regarding this concert is the fact that Collegium Westchester's conductor Eric Kramer was himself a composition student of Peter Lieberson. Further information and updates will be posted at www.collegiumwestchester.org, and can also be obtained by calling 914-282-8611. These concerts are made possible in part by the Arts Alive program of ArtsWestchester, with funding from the Decentralization Program of the New York State Council on the Arts.
