Maryknoll Holds Sculpture Exhibit - Nature Prays, a public exhibition of the woodland sculptures and poetic writings of Maryknoll Sister Marie Pierre Semler will take place from Friday, Oct. 30—Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009 at the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers Mission Center, 55 Ryder Road in Ossining. The gallery is open daily, 10 a.m.- 7 p.m. Admission is free of charge and open to the public. Entitled Nature Prays, the exhibition will feature woodland sculptures and related poetry which are being shown for the first time. Sister Semler’s early years as an artist were spent drawing illustrations for Maryknoll magazine, a publication that brought home the missioners’ stories from overseas. Later, she became intrigued with the idea of creating sculptures from items found in the natural world and developed a new art form. These creations and carvings came to be called her “woodland sculptures,” and emerged from a contemplative approach of waiting for nature to unfold its meaning to her. Sister Semler produced nearly 2,000 pieces of religious art during her lifetime. She died in 1993 at the age of 92. For more information contact 941-7636 ext. 2670. Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers – formally known as the Catholic Foreign Mission Society of America—was founded in 1911 with the support of the Bishops of the United States to be the chief mission outreach of the American Church. We are currently serving the Church –especially among the poor-- in 27 countries worldwide. For more information consult the World Wide Web at www.maryknollsociety.org.
