Ossining Documentary & Discussion Series, presents Brothers of the Black List Thurs. Feb. 12th As always, this event is at the Ossining Library’s Magnificent Budarz Theatre and is FREE! The Program Starts at 6:30; seating begins at 6:15. ODDS is honored to welcome the Racial Justice Program of the American Civil Liberties Union as this month's screening sponsor. 20+ years ago, a woman in upstate reports an attempted rape by a young black man who cut his hand during the altercation. While looking for suspects, police contact officials at nearby SUNY Oneonta. A school administrator hands over names and residences of 125 black male students. Those students are subsequently tracked down and interrogated under a presumption of guilty until proven innocent. In Brothers of the Black List, director Sean Gallagher tracks this story of racism that became the longest litigated civil rights case in American history. An emotional story of social justice, this unsettling documentary serves as a cautionary tale of equal rights gone wrong and is relevant today more than ever. Following the Screening, join us for Conversation! Joining us will be the Director, one of the Film’s Subjects, and OHS teacher, Ms. McRae. Rise Above the Mark - Tuesday, February 10th at 7:00 p.m. Ossining Public Library Budarz Theater, 53 Croton Avenue, Ossining. Rise Above the Mark is a documentary that brings to light the heartbreaking realities of public education. It’s the story of what happens when politics enters the classroom. Public schools are boxed in by current corporate reforms. Rules and regulations restrict vision, depreciate funding, demoralize teachers, and turn students into test- taking machines, robbing them of time to foster creativity. Rise Above the Mark focuses on Indiana’s struggles with public school reforms—the same types of struggles experienced in schools throughout the United States. riseabovethemark.com

The Ossining Story: A Bicentennial Celebration 1813–2013 is still available for purchase. This special-edition souvenir journal commemorated Ossining’s 200th birthday, honoring its past and present. Ossining became the first incorporated village in Westchester County in 1813, when it was still known as Sing Sing. The journal is the culmination of the work of many Ossining residents who cherish our village’s history. Its managing editor, Martha Mesiti, Town Historian and a lifelong resident, reached out to the organizations that comprise Ossining’s vibrant community to share their histories. Over 60 groups responded, including the Police and Fire Departments, houses of worship, educational groups, military groups, historical organizations, social and service groups, and more. Mesiti also commissioned articles of historic interest from local authors and historians, covering such topics as the village’s unique architecture, Sing Sing marble, Sing Sing prison, and historic personalities like the Old Leather Man. The 160-page book is only $10 a copy. Copies of the book are available at the Ossining Municipal Building (16 Croton Ave.). Copies may also be purchased online at the Village of Ossining Web site www.villageofossining.org.
