14 The Reception of Greek Drama in Belgium and the Netherlands Thomas Crombez Introduction The history of the reception of Greek drama in the Low Countries is, as elsewhere, a history of variety. Next to each other one may find superficial borrowings, erudite and empathie translations, and brutal adaptations. In her study of French tragedy adaptations from the fin de siècle, Sylvie Humbert-Mougin notes that the intensive examination of Greek drama was first and foremost a symptom of a brooding crisis within the theater itself (2003: 12). This observation will serve as a guideline for my approach. Why did contempo rary playwrights and directors need the Greek dramatists? What did Euripides, Sophocles, and (to a much lesser extent) Aeschylus and Aristophanes have to offer that contemporary drama could not provide? How did such peculiar drama texts, written in a language that already to the Athenians sounded archaic and solemn, and were intended for an open-air stage that had almost nothing in common with the modern theater, still kindle the imagination of the moderns? For the purpose of this contribution, a bibliography of Dutch translations of Greek drama was composed, and a theatrography of performances produced in the Netherlands and Flanders.1 Based on these data, a number of general observa tions can be formulated, which will form the basis of this chapter. Before the nineteenth century, Dutch translations of Greek drama were pub lished only sporadically. By 1800, some 11 translations had appeared, only of trag edies. In the course of the next century, six times as many translations would be produced. -

In this thesis, Busch‘s aesthetic views on art and literature are gleaned from a variety of his writings including his mature prose piece Eduards Traum (1891). This study argues that Busch‘s aesthetics in this piece anticipated a number of developments associated with the German Moderne, such as complex narrative techniques, distorted states of time and space, ambiguity, fragmentation, and surrealistic modes of expression. -

an offprint from Aristophanes in Performance 421 BC–AD 2007 Peace, Birds and Frogs ❖ EDITED BY EDITH HALL AND AMANDA WRIGLEY Modern Humanities Research Association and Maney Publishing Legenda: Oxford, 2007 C H A P T E R 4 ❖ The English-Speaking Aristophanes 1650–1914 Edith Hall Introduction In Chs. 5 and 6 it will be seen that as early as the 1650s an Irishman could use Aristophanes to criticize English imperialism, while by the early nineteenth century the possibility was being explored in France of staging a topical adaptation of Aristophanes. In 1817, moreover, Eugène Scribe could base his vaudeville show Les Comices d’Athènes on Ecclesiazusae.1 Aristophanes became an important figure for German Romantics, including Hegel, after Friedrich Schlegel had in 1794 published his fine essay on the aesthetic value of Greek comedy.2 There Schlegel proposed that the Romantic ideals of Freedom and Joy (Freiheit, Freude) are integral to all art; since Schlegel regarded comedy as containing them to the highest degree, for him it was the most democratic of all art forms. Aristophanic comedy made a fundamental contribution to his theory of a popular genre with emancipatory potential.3 One result of the philosophical interest in Aristophanes was that in the early decades of the nineteenth century, until the 1848 revolution, the German theatre itself felt the impact of the ancient comic writer: topical Lustspiele displayed interest in his plays, which provided a model for German poets longing for a political comedy, for example the remarkable satirical trilogy Napoleon by Friedrich Rückert (1815–18).4 This international context illuminates the experiences undergone by Aristophanic comedy in England, and what became known as Britain consequent upon the 1707 Act of Union. -

Working Papers in the Humanities Arthur Schnitzler —‘Einer der Modernsten unter den Modernen’:1 The Significance of Schnitzler’s Associations with das Junge Wien for his Critical Reception in Vienna 1890-1900 as Documented in his Press Cuttings Collection. Holly Sayer University of Exeter Abstract My paper looks at the critical reception of Schnitzler’s works in Vienna from 1890 to 1931 as documented in his press cuttings collection. Although the focus of my doctoral study is the significance of the question of Jewish identity, Schnitzler’s associations with the Jung Wien literary group clearly played an important role in shaping the reception of his early works and this is the focus of my first chapter. By addressing the following questions, this paper will explore to what extent and in what ways the critical reception of Schnitzler’s early works Anatol and Liebelei was affected by his associations with the Jung Wien, and what, if any, impact this had on his subsequent critical reception: firstly, it will assess the role that Schnitzler played in the Jung Wien and the relative importance of the group for Schnitzler’s literary development; secondly, it will examine the significance of his being labelled a representative of both specifically modern and specifically Viennese literature; finally it will evaluate how, together with his identity as a Jewish writer, his links with the Jung Wien group were detrimental to the critical reception of his works in Vienna throughout his lifetime. This working paper will investigate how Schnitzler’s associations with the Jung-Wien group and his reputation as a writer of modern drama affected his critical reception in Vienna at the end of the nineteenth century. -
