CURRY, B.A., WESTFIELD STATE COLLEGE M.A., UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST Ph.D., UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST Directed by: Charles Kay Smith The Biblical Judith was written over 2,000 years ago and has become elemental material for artists and writers who struggle with male and female identity. Questions about how beauty has been defined, and who has defined it, as well as the subject of violence as gender-specific territory arise out of the intertextual study of the many re­ workings of Judith and Holofemes' "romance." A rich array of Judith characters ar{developed by artists and writers that reveal cultural values about women. Judith as chaste widow is visually presented in the stone archivolt of the Chartres Cathedral and in Alfred Stevens Victorian painting. She is present in the literature by way of the Old English epic; through Christine de Pizan's allusion in The Book ofthe City ofLadies and Guillaume Salluste du Bartas' epic, La Judit (1574). Christina of Markyate's chaste sexuality is due to her reverence for Mary and Judith articulated in her twelfth century autobiography. In some of Chaucer's Canterbury tales, Judith, like Custance is upheld as the essence of virtue and purity, while in other tales, she appears suspect. v In the tradition of the "woman worthy" or femme forte there is Donatello's statue (ca. 1456-60), Giorgione's sixteenth century painting, and a multitude of works by Botticelli, Mantegna and Cranach. But the strength of the artist and her figures are felt in Artemisia Gentileschi's five paintings of Judith and her cohort, A bra. In studying Artemisia I found myself standing with Mary Garrard, Artemisia, Judith and the Handmaid in a newly formed collage of strength. And soon Shelley Reed, a Cambridge artist, joined us with her revision of Hans Baldung's sixteenth century painting in which she again removes the head and leaves the figure of a woman defending her right to bodily integrity. Judith's sexual provocativeness is a favorite image in art as she becomes stereotyped as the femme fatale. Hans Baldung (1525), Saraceni (1615-20), Valentin de Boulogne (ca. 1626), Vouet (1621), Caravaggio (1598-99), Rubens (1630s), Correggio (1512-14), Vemet (1831) and Klimt (1901, 1909) present us with a riveting portfolio on this theme. Contemporary literature is saturated with the sexual nature of power provoked by Judith and Holofemes. Plays by Hebbel, Giraudoux and Barker provide Judith with a far from heroic finish. But Nicholas Mosley's Judith finds a way to survive with Holofemes: heads do not roll, they connect. Such deep and moving dialogs are formed between art and literature in the study of Judith that I hope the annotated bibliography of 480 works of literature, art and music included in the Appendix invites further study.     Lesser Feasts and Fasts 2018 Conforming to General Convention 2018 1 Preface Christians have since ancient times honored men and women whose lives represent heroic commitment to Christ and who have borne witness to their faith even at the cost of their lives. Such witnesses, by the grace of God, live in every age. The criteria used in the selection of those to be commemorated in the Episcopal Church are set out below and represent a growing consensus among provinces of the Anglican Communion also engaged in enriching their calendars. What we celebrate in the lives of the saints is the presence of Christ expressing itself in and through particular lives lived in the midst of specific historical circumstances. In the saints we are not dealing primarily with absolutes of perfection but human lives, in all their diversity, open to the motions of the Holy Spirit. Many a holy life, when carefully examined, will reveal flaws or the bias of a particular moment in history or ecclesial perspective. It should encourage us to realize that the saints, like us, are first and foremost redeemed sinners in whom the risen Christ’s words to St. Paul come to fulfillment, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” The “lesser feasts” provide opportunities for optional observance. They are not intended to replace the fundamental celebration of Sunday and major Holy Days. As the Standing Liturgical Commission and the General Convention add or delete names from the calendar, successive editions of this volume will be published, each edition bearing in the title the date of the General Convention to which it is a response.

    UNIVERSITY OF ABERDEEN CONCERT SERIES 2019 -2O20 OPENING CONCERT PETER McNEILL: French Horn ELLEN McNEILL: Soprano ALEXANDRA WEBBER GARCIA: Violin JEREMY COLEMAN: Piano KING’S COLLEGE CHAPEL Thursday 19th September, 2019 In my sixth year at school, in the French class, we studied a poem by Alfred De Vigny entitled Le Cor – The Horn. The opening line read: “J’aime le son du cor, le soir, au fond des bois”. I have always remembered that line which suggests the evocative misty reverberant sound of which the French horn is capable. The second piece in the concert ‘Waldvöglein’ by Franz Paul Lachner deals with woodland but even in the first movement of the opening work, ‘Horn Sonata in F major, op. 17’ by Beethoven with its sense of echo, its leaps, its variety in dynamics and with wonderfully expressive playing over the full range of the horn, De Vigny’s romantic and atmospheric description of the horn sound came to mind. Beneath it though, Jeremy Coleman’s dazzlingly virtuosic piano playing lit up Beethoven’s music to perfection. In the comparatively short slow second movement, the horn was gentle and beautifully smooth. Peter McNeill made his horn part flow so freely. Then the ‘song and dance’ music of the finale delivered moments of electrifying energy from both horn and piano. Horn and piano were joined by Peter’s sister Ellen a delightfully clear sounding soprano in ‘Waldvöglein’ by Lachner described as ‘the most successful composer of the Schubert circle’. Ellen has a delightfully silver-toned soprano voice. She would be perfect in the role of the young virginal Sophie von Faninal in Richard Strauss’s opera ‘Der Rosenkavalier’.

Henderson and colleagues, curriculum workers involved with leadership envisioned and embodied in his Collegial Curriculum Leadership Process (CCLP). Their work, “embedded in dynamic, open-ended folding, is a recursive, multiphased process supporting educators with a particular vocational calling” (Henderson, 2017). The four key Deleuzian “folds” of the process explore “awakening” to become lead professionals for democratic ways of living, cultivating repertoires for a diversified, holistic pedagogy, engaging in critical self- examinations and critically appraising their professional artistry. In “reactivating” the lived experiences, scholarship, writing and vocational calling of a brilliant Greek and Latin scholar named Marya Barlowski, meanings will be constructed as engendered through biographical narrative and currere case study. Grounded in the curriculum leadership “map,” she represents an allegorical presence in the narrative. Allegory has always been connected to awakening, and awakening is a precursor for capacity-building. The research design (the precise way in which to study this ‘problem’) will be a combination of historical narrative and currere. This collecting and constructing of Her story speaks to how the vision of leadership isn’t completely new – threads of it are tied to the past.

Digital Aesthetics and the Representation of History in Eric Rohmer’s The Lady and the Duke Giacomo Tagliani University of Siena (Italy) E-mail: [email protected] Abstract. In The Lady and the Duke (2001), Eric Rohmer provides an unusual and “conservative” account of the French Revolution by recurring to classical and yet “revolutionary” means. The interpolation between painting and film produces a visual surface which pursues a paradoxical effect of immediacy and verisimilitude. At the same time though, it underscores the represented nature of the images in a complex dynamic of “reality effect” and critical meta-discourse. The aim of this paper is the analysis of the main discursive strategies deployed by the film to disclose an intermedial effectiveness in the light of its original digital aesthetics. Furthermore, it focuses on the problematic relationship between image and reality, deliberately addressed by Rohmer through the dichotomy simulation/illusion. Finally, drawing on the works of Louis Marin, it deals with the representation of history and the related ideology, in order to point out the film’s paradoxical nature, caught in an undecidability between past and present. Keywords: Eric Rohmer, simulation, illusion, history and discourse, intermediality, tableau vivant. The representation of the past is one of the domains, where the improvement of new technologies can effectively disclose its power in fulfilling our “thirst for reality.” No more cardboard architectures nor polystyrene stones: virtual environments and motion capture succeed nowadays in conveying a truly believable reconstruction of distant times and worlds.

The Göttingen edition has not yet appeared, and the edition of Brooke and Maclean is a “diplomatic” edition in which the main text is basically that of Codex Vaticanus (B). The NETS translation of Judges, therefore, is based on A. Rahlfs, Septuaginta. Id est Vetus Testamentum graece iuxta LXX interpretes, 2 vols.(Stuttgart: Württembergische Bibelanstalt, 1935). In Judges Rahlfs based his edition on the readings of about twenty manuscripts. He identified two main textual traditions, which he believed were so diverse that they amounted to separate recensions (editions) of the book. He printed these as separate texts, designated A and B. NETS Judges, accordingly, offers a translation of both the A and the B texts. Rahlfs based his A text upon Codex Alexandrinus (A) and two groups of manuscripts representing the recensions of the LXX associated, respectively, with Origen (c. 185–253 CE) and Lucian (c. 250–312 CE). His B text was based upon Codex Vaticanus (B). OVERVIEW OF THE TEXT(S) OF JUDGES Subsequent scholarship has refined Rahlfs’ classifications. The manuscripts which are seen as witnesses to an A-type of text are now divided into three groups, AI, AII and AIII, of which AI corresponds fairly closely to Rahlfs’ “Origenic” manuscripts, and AII to his “Lucianic” manuscripts. Similarly, the B-type of text is now held to be represented by two related but distinct manuscript groups.

Griffith Qijun Han, Utrecht University In an article on the pitfalls of cross-cultural analysis, film scholar Emilie Yueh-yu Yeh has proposed replacing the term “melodrama” with “wenyi,” as it can “locate an intrinsic and perhaps more illuminating concept than melodrama to explain Chinese-language cinemas” (Yeh, 2009: 438). In Yeh’s view: Wenyi and melodrama are literally discordant: letters and arts (wenyi) vs. musical theatre (melo-drama). One emphasizes literary value and artistic taste; popular fiction that aspires to serious literature. The other offers the theatrical display and emotional excitement of the sort found in stage musicals (cf. Broadway, operetta, vaudeville). (Yeh, 2009: 445) Yeh is not the first to highlight the concept of wenyi. As early as 1985, Cai Guorong had already raised this issue. For him: Chinese wenyi melodrama developed along two lines: those works that deal with family relationships and ethics, and those that depict romances. […] First, films of this genre use contemporary or recent society as a backdrop; second, they deal with human emotions and are therefore lyrical to an extent. (Cai, 1985; in Zhang, 2012: 25) Yeh has convincingly shown how wenyi connects with and departs from melodrama, and in particular, her historical account of wenyi is a highly valuable tool in interpreting contemporary Chinese films. By proposing to substitute wenyi for melodrama, Yeh has pointed to a set of conceptual tensions underpinning the term melodrama, which is in turn relevant to several issues, such as translation and cultural identity in the aftermath of colonialism and imperialism.
