KDOT Intercity Bus Study ‐ Fact Sheet What is Intercity Bus? Intercity buses are vehicles that carry passengers over long distances; between different cities or towns. Unlike local transit buses, intercity buses have infrequent stops, generally with only one stop location per city. For many people, especially those living in rural areas, intercity bus is a more easily‐accessible, readily‐ available, and often lower‐cost option to taking an airplane or train for long‐distance travel. What is the KDOT Intercity Bus Study? As the party responsible for issuing federal subsidies for intercity bus service, KDOT has undertaken this study to better understand the state of the current intercity bus system in Kansas, and to identify potential areas of unserved demand. The goal is to work with both the intercity bus providers, and various stakeholder groups to develop strategies that will improve service across the state. The study began in June of 2011 and is expected to be complete in June of 2012. The study process will involve the collection and analysis of available data, public/stakeholder involvement (though interviews, surveys, focus groups, and an Advisory Committee), assessment of demand, and the development of solutions and strategies to meet that demand. Statistics: • There are 3 primary companies that currently provide intercity bus services within the state: Greyhound, Jefferson Lines, and Prestige Bus Lines. • There are intercity bus stops located in 21 different cities in Kansas (see map below). • There are approximately 1400 route‐miles covered by intercity bus in Kansas. • Intercity buses operate 24 hours a day within Kansas, although in most cities, there are only one or two stops per day in each direction.
