It is the capital of Castilla-La Mancha and its name has a Latin origin which means “erected, at the top” due to its geographic location. Monastery San Juan de los Reyes It was designed by the architect Juan Guas as a request of the Catholic Kings for the Franciscan Order to commemorate their victory at the Battle of Toro (1476). It was declared Historic-Artistic Monument of national interest in 1926. Formed by a unique nave, it has open chapels with arches to allow the practice of simultaneous rites. The temple, completed in 1495, has an Elizabethan style, made with one nave with alcove chapels between the buttress and with chorus raised at the feet. The cloister, considered one of the Spanish jewels of the Gothic period, is the most antique of the two it had and it suffered many restorations. It has two floors and has a squared floor. The church communicates with the cloister by the south side through two doors situated in the transept and the nave. Using a database of 389,000 observations with over 2.15 million paid days, we demonstrate how the length of the working year in the second half of eighteenth century was very close to the modern standard of 300 days, and that, by the end of the century, building workers—both skilled and unskilled— actually worked around 280 days, a far higher number than suggested by the current estimates for Spain or the figures proposed recently for northern Europe. The most popular Spanish painter of the early 17th Century, called by his contemporaries "The Divine", because of the religious intensity of his paintings. His subjects included many devotional images, including the Virgin and Child. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ El Greco Self Portrait 1595-1600 Doménikos Theotokópoulos (1541 – 1614), most widely known as El Greco, was a painter, sculptor and architect of the Spanish Renaissance. El Greco was born in Crete, which was at that time part of the Republic of Venice, and the center of Post-Byzantine art. He trained and became a master within that tradition before traveling at age 26 to Venice, as other Greek artists had done. In 1570 he moved to Rome, where he opened a workshop and executed a series of works. During his stay in Italy, El Greco enriched his style with elements of Mannerism and of the Venetian Renaissance. In 1577, he moved to Toledo, Spain, where he lived and worked until his death. -

National Museums in Spain: A History of Crown, Church and People José María Lanzarote Guiral Summary The present report provides an overview on the history of national museums in Spain as well as an analysis of a selected set of case studies. In the first part of this report, a historical outline of the creation and evolution of museums is provided from the point of view of the enlarging scope of the concept ‘national heritage’. The choice of national museums in the second part exemplifies the role played by different categories of heritage in the construction of national master narrative in Spain, including fine arts (Museo del Prado), archaeology (Museo Arqueológico Nacional) and nature (Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales). The study of the Museum of the Americas (Museo de América) allows for the exploration of the complex relationship between Spanish national identity and the imperial past, whereas the Museum of History of Catalonia (Museu d’Història de Catalunya) leads reflection to the competing nationalist projects within the state.
