Martin Sagrado – June 2014 LOCATION

San Martin region, Peru

. In the heart of the Andean Amazon, Peru, the headwaters of the Amazon;

. In the region of San Martin, one of the most deforested regions of Peru, but with areas of extensive primary forests still intact, threatened by deforestation;

. High conservation value area with many endemic species and several threatened species (flora and fauna);

. Procurement of vital resources for downstream and surrounding communities (in particular water resources);

Martin Sagrado – June 2014 LOCATION

San Martin region, Peru

. The project is divided into 7 areas of conservation.

. It concerns the preservation of 380 000 hectares of forest.

Martin Sagrado – June 2014 SPECIFIC CONTEXT

Deforestation and degradation : - 0.6% / year

. According to the Regional Government of San Martin, about 26% of the Region San Martin was deforested in 2004.

. Project assessments, interviews and participatory rural appraisals indicate that at least nine deforestation threats and six agents of deforestation have been and continue to be active in the San Martin Province (cf table).

Martin Sagrado – June 2014 PROJECT OBJECTIVES

Developing an alternative economic model for communities

. Controlling and monitoring deforestation within the project site and protecting forests with high conservation value;

. Improving the quality of life of the families that live in these areas by supporting them to develop a range of livelihood activities including sustainable forest management, agro-forestry, non timber activities and livelihood development in the reserve;

. Maintaining and increasing ecosystemic services provided by forests: preserving carbon stocks, enhancing the hydrology, conserving biodiversity and endangered species…

. These are disadvantaged communities, essentially made up of small-scale coffee and cocoa farmers who own 1 to 5 hectares of land, of which 0,5 to 3 hectares are being cultivated.

. They are at the core of project design, decision process, prioritization and implementation of activities.

. The objective of the project is to empower these communities and give them the opportunity to manage their environment and conserve the project area over the long-term.

Martin Sagrado – June 2014 LOCAL PARTNER

Fundacion Amazonia Viva (FUNDAVI)

. The Amazonia Viva Foundation is a Peruvian non-profit foundation created in 2011.

. It is constituted by the associations and cooperatives involved in reforestation and forest conservation projects in San Martin region : ORO VERDE cooperative, and local community associations (APAHUI, APAP, APAPMASAR).

. The Fundacion Amazonia Viva coordinates the project activities with all communities, implements a global scheme for project management and a prioritization of activities, and manages the allocation of funds.

. It is in charge of involving communities in the project zone, through visits to communities with collection of data, feedback and suggestions, and organizations of regular general assemblies for all communities involved in the project.

Martin Sagrado – June 2014 CERTIFICATION

Double validation VCS and CCBA

Biocorredor Martin Sagrado is the 4th REDD+ project in the world to reach the double validation VCS and CCBA (Gold standard level):

. VCS (Verified Carbon Standard) is the best recognised standard on the market of voluntary carbon offset. VCS gives criteria for the validation, measurement and management of carbon compensation projects.

. CCBA (Climate, Community & Biodiversity Alliance) standard guarantees that the project mitigates climate change, supports community development, and preserves biodiversity.
