HALL Department of Entomology, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC, 20560-0127, USA Abstract Two new riodinid genera in the subtribe Nymphidiina (tribe Nymphidiini) are described from the lowlands of the Ama- zon basin. Livendula Hall, n. gen., is described with huebneri Butler as its type species, and the following eleven species are transferred to Livendula (n. combs.) from Adelotypa Warren: amasis Hewitson, aminias Hewitson, aristus Stoll, balista Hewitson, epixanthe Stichel, huebneri Butler, jasonhalli Brévignon & Gallard, leucocyana Geyer, leucophaea Hübner, pauxilla Stichel, and violacea Butler. Minotauros Hall, n. gen., is described with lampros Bates as its type spe- cies, and the following two species are transferred to Minotauros (n. combs.) from Adelotypa: lampros Bates, and cha- ressa Stichel. Key words: Adelotypa, Amazon, morphology, Nymphidiini, taxonomy Introduction The purpose of this paper is to describe two new Amazonian riodinid genera in the subtribe Nymphidiina, one of four subtribes in the large riodinine tribe Nymphidiini (Hall, 1999, 2002; Hall & Harvey, 2002a; Callaghan & Lamas, 2004), for species that heretofore have been treated in Adelotypa Warren, 1895. The Nymphidiina is a sizeable group of over 150 species that has long represented one of the most taxonomically challenging in the whole family (Harvey, 1987). The task of crafting a comprehensive species-level phylogenetic revision and new generic classification for the subtribe is nearly complete (Hall, in prep.). -

Abstract: This study describes the results and collection practices for obtaining arthropod samples to be stud- ied as potential sources of new medicines in a bioprospecting effort. From 1994 to 1998, 1800 arthropod sam- ples of 6-10 g were collected in 21 sites of the Área de Conservación Guancaste (A.C.G) in Northwestern Costa Rica. The samples corresponded to 642 species distributed in 21 orders and 95 families. Most of the collections were obtained in the rainy season and in the tropical rainforest and dry forest of the ACG. Samples were obtained from a diversity of arthropod orders: 49.72% of the samples collected corresponded to Lepidoptera, 15.75% to Coleoptera, 13.33% to Hymenoptera, 11.43% to Orthoptera, 6.75% to Hemiptera, 3.20% to Homoptera and 7.89% to other groups. -

Janzen, December 23, 2007 (sent for review November 16, 2007) DNA barcodes can be used to identify cryptic species of skipper butterflies previously detected by classic taxonomic methods and to provide first clues to the existence of yet other cryptic species. A striking case is the common geographically and ecologically widespread neotropical skipper butterfly Perichares philetes (Lep- idoptera, Hesperiidae), described in 1775, which barcoding splits into a complex of four species in Area de Conservacio´ n Guanacaste (ACG) in northwestern Costa Rica. Three of the species are new, and all four are described. Caterpillars, pupae, and foodplants offer better distinguishing characters than do adults, whose differences are mostly average, subtle, and blurred by intraspecific variation. The caterpillars of two species are generalist grass-eaters; of the other two, specialist palm-eaters, each of which feeds on different genera. But all of these cryptic species are more specialized in their diet than was the morphospecies that held them. The four ACG taxa discovered to date belong to a panneotropical complex of at least eight species. This complex likely includes still more species, whose exposure may require barcoding. -

In view of the importance of sampling these areas, the present study conducted the first butterfly inventory of a coastal area in the state of Paraná. Samples were taken in the Floresta Estadual do Palmito, from February 2014 through January 2015, using insect nets and traps for fruit-feeding butterfly species. A total of 200 species were recorded, in the families Hesperiidae (77), Nymphalidae (73), Riodinidae (20), Lycaenidae (19), Pieridae (7) and Papilionidae (4). Particularly notable records included the rare and vulnerable Pseudotinea hemis (Schaus, 1927), representing the lowest elevation record for this species, and Temenis huebneri korallion Fruhstorfer, 1912, a new record for Paraná. These results reinforce the need to direct sampling efforts to poorly inventoried areas, to increase knowledge of the distribution and occurrence patterns of butterflies in Brazil. Neotropical Ichthyology, 11(4):767-778, 2013 Copyright © 2013 Sociedade Brasileira de Ictiologia A new species of the characid genus Hollandichthys Eigenmann from coastal rivers of southern Brazil (Teleostei: Characiformes) with a discussion on the diagnosis of the genus Vinicius A. Bertaco1 and Luiz R. Malabarba2 Hollandichthys taramandahy, new species, is described from the rio Tramandaí, rio Mampituba, and rio Araranguá basins, coastal drainages of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina States, Brazil. The new species is distinguished from H. multifasciatus, the single recognized species of the genus, by the presence of a small black spot covering the base of median caudal-fin rays, by the lower number of dorsal and ventral procurrent caudal-fin rays, by the absence of a black spot located along anterior half of adipose-fin, and by the absence of humeral spot in specimens larger than 60 mm of standard length. Comments about the geographic distribution and diagnosis are provided for the genus. Hollandichthys taramandahy, espécie nova, é descrita para as bacias dos rios Tramandaí, Mampituba e Araranguá, drenagens costeiras dos estados do Rio Grande do Sul e Santa Catarina, Brasil. A espécie nova distingui-se de H. multifasciatus, a única espécie reconhecida do gênero, pela presença de uma pequena mancha preta cobrindo a base dos raios medianos da nadadeira caudal, pelo menor número de raios procorrentes dorsais e ventrais da nadadeira caudal, pela ausência de uma mancha preta na metade anterior da nadadeira adiposa e pela ausência de mancha umeral em exemplares maiores de 60 mm de comprimento padrão. Comentários sobre a distribuição geográfica e diagnose são apresentados para o gênero.
