Two acoustic duos from remarkably different traditions share this one- time-only double bill. Germán López is a world-renowned timple player from Spain, and is joined by Spanish guitarist Antonio Toledo. López has been performing since the age of 10, including collaborations with the symphony orchestra of Gran Canaria and festival appearances throughout Europe and the U.S. Pronounced “tim-play,” the timple is a diminutive 5-stringed instrument that resembles the 4-stringed ukulele, which López brings to life through a joyous sound that is similar to flamenco music but with a very Portuguese flair. Joel Savoy and Kelli Jones are from Eunice, Louisiana and specialize in Cajun music, honky-tonk and swing on guitar and fiddle. Savoy is the son of renowned Cajun musicians Mark & Ann Savoy, is owner/producer at the Grammy-winning label Valcour Records, and is also the Artistic Director of the Festival of American Fiddle Tunes. This is his third SMF appearance. Kelli Jones grew up playing old-time fiddle alongside her father Carl Jones in North Carolina, and has lived in Louisiana for the past decade. She also performs and tours with Feufollet and T’Monde, in addition to this compelling new project. -

UPDATED & REVISED 5th EDITION* Cover design by Bob McGrath CAJUN RECORDS 1946-1989 – A DISCOGRAPHY © Nick Leigh 2019 INTRODUCTION TO THE REVISED EDITIONS I began collecting blues records in 1959 but it was another 7 years before I heard Cleveland Crochet & the Sugar Bees on the Storyville anthology “Louisiana Blues”. My appetite whetted, I wanted more. Buying the Iry Le Jeune LPs on Goldband a few months later (not one but two volumes – and purchased as imports on a student’s allowance!) fuelled an appreciation of Cajun music that has remained undiminished. In the mid 1960s, however, there was little information available about the great music I was listening to, other than the catalogues I obtained from Goldband and Swallow, and the early articles by Mike Leadbitter and John Broven in “Blues Unlimited” and “Jazz Journal”. Thanks to people like Mike, John, Neil Slaven, Rob Ford and Les Fancourt there is now a lot of information available to provide the background to blues and rhythm & blues recordings. However much of the information about the post World War 2 music of South Louisiana in general and the French (Cajun) recordings in particular, remains elusive. So far as I know no single ‘discography’ of post-war Cajun record releases has been published and I thought I would try to correct this oversight. This is notwithstanding the increasing amount of well researched material about the music in general and individual artists. Therefore I take only limited credit for the information included herein about the recordings. My aim has been to bring that material together in a single document. -

Dewey Balfa Dewey Was Born in 1927 to a Large Musical Family From
Dewey Balfa Dewey was born in 1927 to a large musical family from Bayou Grand Louis near Mamou, Louisiana. His father, grandfather and great-grandfather were all fiddlers, as was his older brother , Will. Dewey began playing fiddle as a child, and as a young man started a band with his brothers: Will on fiddle and Harry, and later Rodney, on Guitar. Far material they drew on a large treasury of songs learned from their father and also composed songs of their own. Many of their songs, such as “Pointe aux Pains,” “Tit Galop pour Mamou” and “Parlez nous á Boire,” have become standards in the Cajun repertoire. The Balfa Brothers became known for their compelling twin fiddle sound and soulful vocals. They supplemented their sound with accordion, playing with such greats as Nathan Abshire, Hadley Fontenot, Nonc Allie Young and Marc Savoy. Like most Cajun musicians, the Balfas depended on music to supplement their incomes and support their families. Dewey Balfa worked at various times as a farmer, insurance salesman, school bus driver, disc jockey and furniture storeowner. In 1964 Dewey performed with Gladius Thibodeaux and Louis “Vinesse” LeJeune at the Newport Folk Festival in Rhode Island. They received a standing ovation from an audience of 17,000 people, most of whom had never heard Cajun music before. Dewey returned to Louisiana convinced of the value of his culture and its music. For the rest of his life he worked tirelessly to bring that conviction to his own people and Cajun music to audiences throughout North America, Europe and Japan. -

Raising the Bar: The Reciprocal Roles and Deviant Distinctions of Music and Alcohol in Acadiana by © Marion MacLeod A dissertation submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Ethnomusicology Memorial University of Newfoundland June, 2013 St. John 's, Newfoundland ABSTRACT The role of alcohol in musical settings is regularly relegated to that of incidental by stander, but its pervasive presence as object, symbol or subject matter in Acadian and Cajun performance contexts highlights its constructive capacity in the formation of Acadian and Cajun musical worlds. Individual and collective attitudes towards alcohol consumption implicate a wide number of cultural domains which, in this work, include religious display, linguistic development, respect for social conventions, and the historically-situated construction of identities. This research uses alcohol as an interpretive lens for ethnomusicological understanding and, in so doing, questions the binaries of marginal and mainstream, normal and deviant, sacred and profane, traditional and contemporary, sober and inebriated. Attitudes towards alcohol are informed by, and reflected in, all ofthese cultural conflicts, highlighting how agitated such categorizations can be in lived culture. Throughout the dissertation, I combine the historical examples of HatTy Choates and Cy aMateur with ethnographic examinations of culturally-distinct perfonnative habits, attitudes toward Catholicism, and compositional qualities. Compiling often incongruous combinations of discursive descriptions and enacted displays, my research suggests that opposition actually confirms interdependence. Central to this study is an assertion that levels of cultural competence in Cajun Louisiana and Acadian Nova Scotia are uneven and that the repercussions of this unevenness are musically and behaviourally demonstrated. -

Ferris) The Lost Bayou Ramblers, a young Cajun band based in South Louisiana, infuse energy and vivacity into the traditional creative expression of Cajun music, as they travel to share their sound and thus their culture with the world. I suggest that the Ramblers, in the face of globalization, are purposefully engaged in protecting and enhancing their culture by performing this roots music far and near. They offer a compelling performance and thus transport, produce, and extend their culture through music, which serves as a powerful symbol, drawing each audience into participation of it. Through a focus on the specific dynamic between culture, its music, and the performance techniques of these particular cultural practitioners, I examine how music acts as an agent of cultural understanding while simultaneously transforming the place and culture that produced it. iii DEDICATION To the members of the Lost Bayou Ramblers, whose inimitable talent and vision captured me and countless others, drawing us into their world.
