VICTOR MARIE, COMTE HUGO, was born at Besangon, on February 26, 1802, and died on May 22, 1885. His father, General Comte Hugo, though, like his wife, a member of an ancient royalist family, followed the fortunes of the First Napoleon. Victor Hugo's first literary attempt was a tragedy, Irtamene, written in 1816, in the orthodox classical style, which he afterwards so effectually thrust from its pride of place. His ardent turn of mind soon led him to choose stirring or pathetic themes from reaJLJife and history, "and He gathered round him, under the name of the Ctnacle, a band of kindred enthusiasts in the cause of romantjc_interest against classical precision of form. In his preface to the first edition of Hernani (1830) he thus expresses ' himself : Le romantisme n'est, a tout prenolre, que le liberalhme. en litterature. A peuple nouveau, art nouveau. Tout en admirant la litterature de Louis xiv. si bien adaptee a sa monarchic, elle saura bien avoir sa litterature propre et personnelle et nationale, cette France actuelle, cette France du dix-neuvieme * fi Downloaded from https://www.holybooks.com x LIFE OF THE AUTHOR siecle a qui Mirabeau a fait sa libert et Napoleon sa puissance.' His first drama in the Romantic style was Crom- well (1827), followed by Hernani (1829), and Ruy Bias (1838). The first representation of Ruy Bias was given at the Salle Ventadour in Paris, on the 8th of November 1838. In 1841 Victor Hugo became an Academician, in 1845 a Peer of France, and, after the Revolution of iS^BT^ii active politician. He was, at first, in accordance with his family traditions and his own early sympathies, a strong Conservative, and then, by a sudden conversion, an ardent Democrat. In 1851 he was proscribed by Louis Napoleon, from whom he twice, in 1859 and 1869, refused an amnesty. From 1855 to 1870 he lived in Guernsey, in violent opposition to the Second Empire, after the fall of which he finally settled in Paris. The following comments on the chief characters in the play are taken from the author's own preface : * Quel est le sens de ce drame ? - 1 Au moment ou une monarchic va s'e'crouler, plu- sieurs phenomenes peuvent etre observes. Et d'abord la noblesse tend a se dissoudre. En se dissolvant elle se divise, et voici de quelle fagon : ' Une partie des gentilshommes, la moins honnete et la moins gene'reuse, reste a la cour. Tout va etre englouti, le temps presse, il faut se hater, il faut s'enrichir, s'agrandir et profiter des circonstances. ,Qn ne songe plus qu'a soi. Chacun se fait, sans pitfe pour le pays, une petite fortune particuliere dans un coin de la grande infortune publique. ' L'etat desesper du royaume pousse 1'autre moitie de la noblesse, la meilleure et la mieux ne'e, dans une autre voie. Elle s'en va chez elle, elle rentre dans ses chateaux, dans ses seigneuries. Elle a horreur des affaires, elle n'y peut rien, la fin du monde ap- proche; qu'y faire et a quoi bon se desoler? II faut s'etourdir, fermer les yeux, vivre, boire, aimer, jouir. ' Un beau matin, il lui arrive un malheur. Oublie* et abandonne de tous, excepte de ses creanciers, te- pauvre gentilhomme devient alors ce qu'il peut, un un peu aventurier, un peu spadassin, peu bohemien ; .. du et reste, bonne, brave, loyale intelligentefj^ nature et ; melange du poe'te, du gueux du prince. * Si le double tableau que nous venons de tracer s'offre dans 1'histoire de toutes les monarchies a un moment donne, il se presente particulierement en Espagne d'une fagon frappante a la fin du dix- septieme siecle. Ainsi, ... la premiere moitie de la noblesse espagnole a cette dpoque se resumerait en Don Salluste, et la seconde moitie en Don Char. ' Au dessous de la noblesse ainsi partagee, on voit remuer dans 1'ombre quelque chose de grand, de sombre et d'inconnu. C'est le peuple. Most readers of Ruy Bias have felt that the char- acter of Don Ce'sar deserved a happier fate. Six years after the appearance of Ruy Bias, MM. Dumanoir and D'Ennery produced their well-known drama, Don Cesar de Bazan. This was first acted at the Theatre de la Porte Saint Martin, on July 30, 1844. c ' Don Cesar was acted by M. Frederick Lemaitre, of whose acting as Ruy Bias in 1838 V. H. wrote : ' Cest Faction de Kean combinee avec Vemotion de ' Talma? Hence perhaps his nickname, Le Talma des boulevards? The main point in this later play is the complete rehabilitation of Don Cesar. Witness ' his own words at the end of the fourth act : Don Cesar taventurier n'existe plus . .. don Cesar le ' gentilhomme va renaitre ! The intimate connection between Hernani and Ruy Bias is shown as follows by the author : 'Par le sens historique, Ruy Bias se rattache a Hernani. tergfand fait de la noblesse se montre, dans Hernani comme dans Ruy Bias, a cote du grand fait de la royaute. MARIA ANNA, second wife of Charles n. of Spain, was the daughter of Philip William, Duke of Neu- burg and Elector Palatine (1685-1690), by Elizabeth Amelia of Hesse "Darmstadt. One of her sisters, Leonora Magdalen, married the Emperor Leopold I. (1658-1705); and another, Maria Sophia Elizabeth, married Pedro n. of Portugal (1667-1706). Maria Anna was born on October 28th, 1667, married Charles n. on May 4th, 1690, and died at Bayonne on July i6th, 1740. Her character as portrayed in the play is not historically correct. Victor Hugo has apparently borrowed it from Maria Louisa, the first wife of Charles n. This princess was daughter of Monsieur, Duke of Orleans, and brother of Louis xiv. Madame 1 D'Aulnoy (1650-1705) draws a charming picture of her beauty and gentleness.
