ON BURGENLAND CROATIAN ISOGLOSSES PETER HOUTZAGERS 1. Introduction Among the Croatian dialects spoken in the Austrian province of Burgenland and the adjoining areas1 all three main dialect groups of central South Slavic2 are represented. However, the dialects have a considerable number of characteris- tics in common.3 The usual explanation for this is (1) the fact that they have been neighbours from the 16th century, when the Ot- toman invasions caused mass migrations from Croatia, Slavonia and Bos- nia; (2) the assumption that at least most of them were already neighbours before that. Ad (1) Map 14 shows the present-day and past situation in the Burgenland. The different varieties of Burgenland Croatian (henceforth “BC groups”) that are spoken nowadays and from which linguistic material is available each have their own icon. 5 1 For the sake of brevity the term “Burgenland” in this paper will include the adjoining areas inside and outside Austria where speakers of Croatian dialects can or could be found: the prov- ince of Niederösterreich, the region around Bratislava in Slovakia, a small area in the south of Moravia (Czech Republic), the Hungarian side of the Austrian-Hungarian border and an area somewhat deeper into Hungary east of Sopron and between Bratislava and Gyǡr.     Marti Roland Universität des Saarlandes Saarbrücken, Deutschland Codification and Re(tro)codification of a Minority Language: The Case of Lower Sorbian Lower Sorbian – codification – orthography – Slavonic microlanguages The codification of languages or language varieties belongs to the realm of standardology in linguistics (cf. Brozović 1970). It is interesting to note, although not really surprising, that questions of standardology first attracted the interest of linguists in Slavonic-speaking countries, albeit in rather different ways.1 On the one hand it was the Prague school of linguistics that developed a framework for the description of standard languages (cf. Jedlička 1990), prompted at least partly by the diglossic situation of Czech (according to Ferguson 1959). On the other hand it was Soviet linguistics with its hands-on experience of working with the many languages of the Soviet Union that had no written tradition at all or used very imperfect writing systems. The linguistic bases on which theories were developed differed considerably and so did the respective approaches. The aim of the study is to provide a description of the formal means of expressing semantic transitivity in the Eastern dialects of the Mansi language, as well as the variation between the different means. Two of the four articles are about the marking of direct objects (DOs) in Eastern Mansi (EM), one outlines the function of noun marking in the DO marking system and one concerns the variation between three-participant constructions. The study is connected to Uralic studies and functional-linguistic typology. Mansi is a Uralic language spoken is Western Siberia. Unfortunately, its Eastern dialects died out some decades ago, but there are still approximately 2700 speakers of Northern Mansi. Because it is no longer possible to access any live data on EM, the study is based on written folkloric materials gathered by Artturi Kannisto about 100 years ago. From the typological point of view, Mansi is an agglutinative language with many inflectional and derivational suffixes.

Mansi (< Ob-Ugric < Finno-Ugric < Uralic) is a relatively poorly documented language. So far, there is not a single tolerable resource which would contain annotated texts in various Mansi dialects. Our corpus is an attempt at creating such a resource. The data to be found in the corpus are diverse both regarding the dialect they belong to and the time when they were recorded. Texts in extinct Mansi dialects (Southern, Eastern, Western) may date as far back as the 1840s, while Upper Lozva texts and audio recordings were gathered in 2017-2018. Because of this diversity, the problem of linguistic variation and its support in the corpus is crucial for us. The data which exhibit both linguistic variation and heterogeneity of writing systems need to be processed uniformly. The complex task of variation processing is solved separately at each step of corpus building: optical character recognition (OCR) during preliminary processing of printed materials, morphological annotation and search implementation based on the Tsakorpus platform.     The Role of Morphosyntactic Feature Economy in the Evolution of Slavic Number Tatyana Slobodchikoff Troy University 1. Introduction The Slavic dual pronouns exhibit two different patterns of diachronic change. The first pattern of diachronic change is exemplified in three languages - Slovenian, Upper, and Lower Sorbian. In these languages, dual pronouns continue to be used by the speakers in a bi-morphemic morphological structure consisting of a plural pronominal stem and the numeral dva ('two') or the dual suffix -j (1a). The second pattern of diachronic change is more pervasive and occurred in all of the Slavic languages including Russian and Kashubian. In Russian and Kashubian, dual pronouns were reanalyzed by the speakers as plural (1b). (1) Two Patterns of Diachronic Change in the Slavic Dual a. dual → plural + dva/-j Slovenian & Upper, Lower Sorbian b. dual → plural Russian & Kashubian The diachronic changes in the Slavic dual, although well documented, remain a puzzling problem for morphological theory. Some scholars attribute diachronic changes in the Slavic dual to morphological markedness of dual number. Derganc (2003) shows that the nominal dual, as a more morphologically marked category, was replaced by the plural in Ljubljana Slovenian and some of its other dialects. In a detailed study of the Old Russian dual, Žolobov (2001) proposes that dual pronouns were reanalyzed as plural due to markedness of the dual as a more restricted category of number as opposed to the plural. Nevins (2011) argues that morphological markedness of the abstract features of the dual in Slovenian and Sorbian can trigger either postsyntactic deletion of the marked dual features themselves or deletion of other phi-features, such as gender.

Research questions The Mansi language is an endangered indigenous minority language spoken in Western Siberia. Linguistically it belongs to the family of Uralic languages, socially it belongs to the group of the so-called numerically small indigenous peoples of the Russian Federation. The beginnings of bilingualism (and probable multilingualism) of the Mansi society are no doubt located in the distant past, and it would be problematic to determine the starting point of language shift, but it is certain that researchers (e.g. Munkácsi 1889a: 208, 222-224) have been complaining about the difficulty of finding native speakers due to assimilation and rapid language shift for more than a hundred years. Thus, it appears to be likely that at least a part of Mansi society became a subject of language endangerment already during the 19th century, and the process has continued ever since. The Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug and Khanty- Mansiysk as its administrative and cultural centre often use the name Yugra, which refers to the indigenous Ob-Ugric peoples, as well as to ornaments and festivals originating from Ob-Ugric traditions, thus creating the district’s and the city’s own identity within Russia (Nagy 2016: 10-11). In order to “authentically” represent the Ob-Ugric cultural elements, the majority society needs Ob-Ugrians, including Mansis, who are considered “authentic”, but defining the authentic Ob-Ugric identity is not unproblematic in urbanised conditions.
