    REPORT REPORT 2012/2013 I REPORT It gives me great satisfaction to present you with the Adam Mickiewicz Institute’s latest report. I hope it proves that our 13th season not only wasn’t an unlucky one, but in fact abounded in momentous events and substantial successes. Among the most important of these was the appointment of the Board of the Institute, whose illustrious members include Professor Jerzy Buzek (Chairman), Dr Włodzimierz Cimoszewicz, Professor Jerzy Hausner, Professor Edmund Wnuk-Lipiński, Ambassador Jerzy Koźmiński and, ex officio, Undersecretary of State Monika Smoleń (Ministry of Culture and National Heritage) and Undersecretary of State Beata Stelmach (Ministry of Foreign Affairs). The 2012/2013 season was important not only in terms of the international successes of Polish culture, to mention Polska Arts in Edinburgh or the multidimensional Lutosławski 100/100 project, of which international critics wrote that it successfully brought this great composer into the repertoires of the world’s best orchestras, soloists, conductors and concert halls. We have months of many musical and theatrical thrills behind us, also in Poland. In spring 2013 we welcomed the best Russian productions to Warsaw during the Da! Da! Da! festival – a review that became an unquestionable sensation, enthusiastically received by critics and audiences alike. In other countries, we devoted the season to developing our long-term programme promoting Polish design and consolidating the Polska brand in such important places as London, Milan, Paris as well as Asia where we have been building our position consistently for the past four years. Nun bezeichnet dieser Begriff einen Teil des Geis- tes nach Aristoteles, der zwischen dem ‚tätigen‘ (dem „nous poietikos“) und eben dem ‚leidenden Geist‘ ( dem „nous pathetikos“ ) unterscheidet. 1 Dabei stellt der „nous pathetikos“ als rezeptives Vermögen des Geistes eine Schnittstelle zwischen dem Denken und der Wirklichkeit dar. Unterhalb dieses Begriffs ist auf der Tafel noch ein Pfeil zu erkennen, der zwischen „agens“ und „intellectus possibilis“ verläuft. Das wiederum ist ein zentraler Begriff bei Thomas von Aquin, der die aristotelischen Bestimmungen auf- 66 nimmt und in eine neue theoretische Begrifflichkeit umschreibt. Unter „in- tellectus agens“ versteht von Aquin die der ‚passiven‘ („intellectus passivus“ ) oder der ‚möglichen‘ („intellectus possibilis“) entgegengesetzte ‚tätige Ver- nunft‘, die eine grundsätzliche Offenheit des Geistes beschreibt.

    Press Release May 30, 2011 The ars viva Prize 2011/12 on Language goes to Erik Bünger, Philipp Goldbach, and Juergen Staack Berlin. Kulturkreis der deutschen Wirtschaft im BDI e. V. awards this year’s ars viva Prize for Fine Arts to the three artists Erik Bünger (born in 1976), Philipp Goldbach (born in 1978) and Juergen Staack (born in 1978). The prize includes three exhibitions domestically and abroad, the publication of a bilingual catalog, an artist’s edition, as well as a financial award of 5,000 Euros for each artist. This year’s competition explored the subject of language. The jury of twelve was unanimous in choosing Berlin-based Swedish artist Erik Bünger as well as Philipp Goldbach and Juergen Staack, two artists who live and work in the Rhineland. All three convinced the jury with their conceptual rigor and their complex engagement with the subject of language. In his lecture performances, Erik Bünger analyzes the power and irrationality of language in popular music, speeches, and interviews. Philipp Goldbach, in contrast, studies the consistency and temporality of the supports used for written language, while Juergen Staack translates images into language by way of various processes of transformation and transcription, then re-rendering them as data on the image support. At the jury’s first meeting, 12 finalists were chosen from among 39 competitors. These 12 finalists then personally presented their work at their studios during the two-day final jury round. On the basis of these presentations, the jury selected the three prizewinners.
