Mesoweb Publications The Rulers of Palenque INTRODUCTION The unsung pioneer in the study of Palenque’s dynastic history is Heinrich Berlin, who in three seminal studies (Berlin 1959, 1965, 1968) provided the essential outline of the dynasty and explicitly identified the name glyphs and likely accession dates of the major Early and Late Classic rulers (Stuart 2005:148-149). More prominent and well deserved credit has gone to Linda Schele and Peter Mathews (1974), who summarized the rulers of Palenque’s Late Classic and gave them working names in Ch’ol Mayan (Stuart 2005:149). The present work is partly based on the transcript by Phil Wanyerka of a hieroglyphic workshop presented by Schele and Mathews at the 1993 Maya Meet- ings at Texas (Schele and Mathews 1993). Essential recourse has also been made to the insights and decipherments of David Stuart, who made his first Palenque Round Table presentation in 1978 at the age of twelve (Stuart 1979) and has recently advanced our understanding of Palenque and its rulers immeasurably (Stuart 2005). -

The University of Texas at Arlington, 2008 Supervising Professor: Douglas Richmond The universality of the cross image within the transatlantic confrontation meant not only a hegemony of culture, but of symbolism. The symbol of the cross existed in both European and American societies hundreds of years before Columbus. In both cultures, the cross was integral in religious ceremony, priestly decoration, and cosmic maps. As a symbol of life and death, of human and divine suffering, of religious and political acquiescence, no other image in transatlantic history has held such a perennial, powerful message as the cross. For colonial Mexico, which felt the brunt of Spanish initiative, the symbol of the cross penetrated the autochthonous culture out of which the independent nation and indigenous church were born. -

Brandes The first decade of the 21st century has seen a transformation in national and regional Mexican politics and society. In the state of Yucatán, this transformation has taken the shape of a newfound interest in indigenous Maya culture coupled with increasing involvement by the state in public health efforts. Suicide, which in Yucatán more than doubles the national average, has captured the attention of local newspaper media, public health authorities, and the general public; it has become a symbol of indigenous Maya culture due to an often cited association with Ixtab, an ancient Maya ―suicide goddess‖. My thesis investigates suicide as a socially produced cultural artifact. It is a study of how suicide is understood by many social actors and institutions and of how upon a close examination, suicide can be seen as a trope that illuminates the complexity of class, ethnicity, and inequality in Yucatán. In particular, my dissertation –based on extensive ethnographic and archival research in Valladolid and Mérida, Yucatán, México— is a study of both suicide and suicide prevention efforts. -

Late Classic Maya Political Structure, Polity Size, and Warfare Arenas
LATE CLASSIC MAYA POLITICAL STRUCTURE, POLITY SIZE, AND WARFARE ARENAS Arlen F. CHASE and Diane Z. CHASE Department of Sociology and Anthropology University of Central Florida Studies of the ancient Maya have moved forward at an exceedingly rapid rate. New sites have been discovered and long-term excavations in a series of sites and regions have provided a substantial data base for interpreting ancient Maya civili- zation. New hieroglyphic texts have been found and greater numbers of texts can be read. These data have amplified our understanding of the relationships among subsistence systems, economy, and settlement to such an extent that ancient Maya social and political organization can no longer be viewed as a simple dichoto- mous priest-peasant (elite-commoner) model. Likewise, monumental Maya archi- tecture is no longer viewed as being indicative of an unoccupied ceremonial center, but rather is seen as the locus of substantial economic and political activity. In spite of these advances, substantial discussion still exists concerning the size of Maya polities, whether these polities were centralized or uncentralized, and over the kinds of secular interactions that existed among them. This is espe- cially evident in studies of aggression among Maya political units. The Maya are no longer considered a peaceful people; however, among some modern Maya scholars, the idea still exists that the Maya did not practice real war, that there was little destruction associated with military activity, and that there were no spoils of economic consequence. Instead, the Maya elite are portrayed as engaging predo- minantly in raids or ritual battles (Freidel 1986; Schele and Mathews 1991). -

We don’t have Mayan artefacts in our collection—the box was created to sup- port teachers. This pack is aimed at supporting children’s learning at home. Our information is short and easy to read - but remember this is about interesting you in the topic, it’s not the whole history of the Mayans. Mayan Calendar Mayan calendars are a set of 3 interlocking calendars; Tzolkin, Haab, Long Count calendar. When Mayans referred to a date in an inscription, they used all three calendars to write the date. Every 52 years the Tzolkin and Haab would sync together, this was called a calendar round. The Tzolkin or sacred calendar was a 260 day period divided into 20 equal peri- ods. Each day was represented by a day and a number. The numbers ran from 1 to 13 and there were 20 day names. When the cycle of 1 to 13 was complete it would start again, the 20 day names would continue. It took 260 days to re- turn back to number 1 and day 1. The Haab or Solar calendar has 365 days, so therefore can be most closely linked to the Georgian calendar we use today. However, the Mayans divided the year up into 18 months of 20 days each and then 5 isolated days that were seen to be unlucky, this time was known as the Wayeb. -

HISTORIA Y VIRGINIA GARCIA ACOSTA DESASTRES EN Coordinadora AMERICA LATINA VOLUMEN II Red de Estudios Sociales en Prevención de Desastres en América Latina 1997 Si el primer volumen de Historia y Desastres en América Latina es, como se dice allí “el producto germinal que permite mostrar que existen posibilidades de desarrollar este campo, pionero tanto en México como en el resto de América Latina”, este segundo consolida tales posibilidades. Algunos de los ensayos que aparecen aquí fueron entregados con mucha anticipación, pero se reservaron para acompañarlos con otros que permitieran hacer lecturas comparativas en tiempos y espacios similares, o bien que posibilitaran que el libro ofreciera una visión geográfica más amplia. Se trata de diez ensayos que se han organizado con base en una secuencia cronológica y que se encuentran inscritos en los períodos prehispánico, colonial, y en el siglo XIX. Se ubican en los espacios actualmente ocupados por México, Guatemala, El Salvador, Colombia, Perú, Bolivia, Argentina y Brasil. Los procesos crecientes de vulnerabilidad que se han desarrollado en América Latina a lo largo de su larga historia, muestran que la presencia de amenazas de orden natural han provocado desastres siempre en asociación con ellos. Desde las culturas y civilizaciones más antiguas que evolucionaron en la región, hasta las naciones hoy existentes, pasando por sus respectivas etapas de colonización e independencia, se han enfrentado a desastres que no resultan ser absolutamente naturales. La constatación de esta aseveración que antes, y aún para muchos resulta ser todavía una hipótesis, obliga a repensar muchos de los esquemas prefigurados por las instituciones, las universidades, los organismos locales, nacionales e internacionales, en términos de considerar seriamente por qué estos desastres son cada vez menos naturales.
