I also declare that the intellectual content of this thesis is the product of my own work, except to the extent that assistance from others in the research project's design and conception or in style, presentation and linguistic expression is acknowledged. 3 Abstract The poem Tabaré by Juan Zorrilla de San Martín has been considered the national epic poem of Uruguay since its creation in 1886. Tabaré recounts he struggle of the indigenous Charrúa tribe of the Banda Oriental (modern Uruguay) against the Spanish invaders of the sixteenth century and their ultimate defeat. Its popularity served to eclipse a preceding series of literary works which also depicted the Charrúas. Zorrilla’s overall negative portrayal of a vanished race prevailed for much of the following century. This thesis investigates three earlier literary works, a drama, a novelette, and a grand opera, and compares their treatment of the same characters and historical events. This study reveals the existence of some commonalities among all three works, including a more positive interpretation of the Charrúas and their place in Uruguayan history. The comparative study includes the analysis of literary themes and use of language. The examination of excerpts from the opera will reveal how the music of the opera relates to the mentioned themes and to the text of Desteffanis. For the purpose of this thesis, an original and sole recording of these excerpts has been prepared. It is true. Mujica was not consulted to find out his opinions on major world events. Uruguay is not a player on that stage. For such consultation, the media go to major political actors, such as US President Barack Obama, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez. The media are attracted to Mujica for a very particular reason. They all use the exact same words to describe him as "the poorest president in the world." But that is not the only reason that media from The New York Times to The Hindu—the Chennai, India, newspaper with an average daily circulation of 1.8 million copies—come to Montevideo to write stories.

Este trabalho é parte da minha pesquisa de mestrado que por sua vez tem como tema: As relações internacionais entre o Império do Brasil e as Províncias Unidas do Rio da Prata durante a Guerra da Cisplatina (1825- 1828). Procuramos compreender nesse presente estudo a consolidação do poder por parte deles sobre a região do Prata, já que era fundamental estruturar uma identidade na formação de tais Estados. A Guerra da Cisplatina, entretanto, pode ser considerada como o primeiro conflito em nível regional a ser resolvido pelo Brasil e Argentina em suas agendas de política externa e como um entrave também entre as suas áreas de litígio. Além disso, se quisermos nos aprofundar sobre a história da diplomacia entre tais países, elas terão suas origens majoritariamante nesse conflito. Daí, a necessidade de se pesquisar cada vez mais as relações internacionais de ambos os países nesse confronto. Neste trabalho, temos como referencial teórico o conceito de Relações Internacionais dos cientistas políticos Jean Baptiste Duroselle e Pierre Renouvin. Segundo eles, esse termo engloba uma série de elementos, dentre eles: territorialidade, condições demográficas, relevo, soberania e fronteiras políticas.1 A Guerra da Cisplatina pode-se inserir nesse campo teórico uma vez que o fator dos limites de fronteiras esteve intrinsecamente ligado à eclosão do conflito. A disputa pelo domínio da província Cisplatina, além de sua importância econômica, foi marcada também por um outro tópico componente do conceito de relações internacionais desses autores: Soberania.

Cada uno de estos capítulos corresponde a diferentes épocas, con sus diferentes necesidades y tradiciones lexicográficas. Cabe aclarar que excluimos la obra comenzada por Washington Pedro Bermúdez, en 1880, El lenguaje del Río de la Plata, y el Vocabulario Rioplatense Razonado, de Daniel Granada, de 1889, dado que se trata de vocabularios independientes que abren una nueva etapa en la lexicografía uruguaya, que ya ha sido abordada. It includes four chapters: the notes of the first chroniclers and travelers, the lexicographic practices of the first Montevidean writers, the vocabularies and glossaries attached to poems, novels and essays of the second half of the century and the bilingual lexicography of Spanish- Native languages. Each of these chapters corresponds to different times, with their different lexicographic needs and traditions. It is important to clarify that we exclude Washington Pedro Bermúdez’ work, initiated in 1888, El lenguaje del Río de la Plata, and the Vocabulario Rioplatense Razonado, published by Daniel Granada in 1889, due to the fact that they are independent vocabularies that belong to a new lexicographic stage that has been profusely studied.
