Five species (Conicera tibialis Schmitz, Received: 1925, Dohrniphora cornuta (Bigot, 1857), Gymnophora arcuata (Meigen, 1830), 06 August, 2018 Metopina oligoneura (Mik, 1867) and Triphleba intermedia (Malloch, 1908)) are newly recorded from Iran. ROTHERAY1* and FRANCIS GILBERT2 1National Museums of Scotland, Chambers Street, Edinburgh EH1 1JF, UK 2School of Biology, University of Nottingham, Nottingham NR7 2RD, UK Received 23 April 2007; accepted for publication 1 August 2007 We examined final-stage larvae of all currently recognized lower cyclorrhaphan (= Aschiza) families, except Ironomyiidae and Sciadoceridae, and those of the higher cyclorrhaphan (= Schizophora) families Calliphoridae, Conopidae, Lonchaeidae, Muscidae, and Ulidiidae, and compared them with larvae of two out-group families, Rhagionidae and Dolichopodidae, paying particular attention to structures of the head. A set of 86 morphological characters were analysed phylogenetically. The results show that the lower Cyclorrhapha is paraphyletic in relation to the higher Cyclorrhapha. The monophyly of the Cyclorrhapha is strongly supported. The lower Cyclorrhapha is resolved into two clades, based on the Lonchopteridae. Within the Syrphidae the traditional three-subfamily system is supported, based on the Microdontinae. Within the lower Cyclorrhapha, the larval head is variable in form and arrangement of components. In Lonchopteridae, the mouth lies at the back of an open trough or furrow, comprising ventrally an elongate labium and laterally the maxilla. This arrangement of components appears to facilitate scooping food in water films. In Platypezoidea there is no furrow, and the dorsolateral lobes bearing the antennae are connected by a dorsal extension of the pseudocephalon. The main food-gathering structure is the hooked apex of the labium, but in Phoridae the mandibles may also be important. -

DISNEY Department of Zoology, University of Cambridge, Cambridge CB2 3EJ, England; e-mail: [email protected] Abstract: The collection of the scuttle flies (Diptera, Phoridae) visiting flowers of Cryptogorynae crispatula (Araceae) caught in Yunnan, China were studied. They were identified to 24 species of which only five were known, seven species are hereby described as new to science and next 13 species cannot be named until linked to their opposite sexes. The following are described. Conicera species female YG, cannot be named until linked to its male. Dohrniphora guangchuni n. sp., Megaselia duolobata n. sp., M. excrispatula n. sp., M. interstinctus n. sp., M. leptotibiarum n. sp., M. menglaensis n. sp., M. shooklinglowae n. sp., Megaselia species Y1 female that cannot be named until linked to its male. The recognition of M. chippensis (Brues, 1911), described from a single female, is augmented. Males of 6 species (Y1-Y6) of Puliciphora Dahl, cannot be named until linked to their females and 5 species of Woodiphora Schmitz. Key words: Phoridae, China, Yunnan, new species. INTRODUCTION Low Shook Ling (Paleoecology Group, Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Menglun, Mengla) caught the insects visiting flowers of Cryptogorynae crispatula (Araceae) in Yunnan, China and sent me the scuttle flies (Diptera, Phoridae) for identification. These represent 24 species of which 5 were known species, 6 are new species that are described below and 13 species that cannot be named until linked to their opposite sexes. -

Keywords Checklist, Finland, Diptera, Lonchopteridae, Phoridae Introduction The superfamily Phoroidea includes at least the fly families Phoridae, Lonchopteridae, and the small family Ironomyiidae known only from Australia. The flat-footed fly families Platypezidae and Opetiidae, treated in a separate paper in this volume, are placed either in their own basal superfamily Platypezoidea or included in Phoroidea (see Cumming et al. 1995, Woodley et al. 2009 and Wiegmann et al. 2011). Lonchoptera Meigen, 1803 is the only currently recognized genus in Lonchopteri- dae. Five Lonchoptera species have been added to the Finnish fauna after the checklist of Hackman (1980) (Andersson 1991, Kahanpää 2013). The scuttle flies (family Phoridae) may be the largest single family in Diptera. -

This is a year of many firsts for our academy, including our first two day meeting, a new abstract submission system for meeting management, and other technological advances to try to move us forward as a scientific society in the current decade. This meeting would not be possible without the work of many people, as a great many thanks are needed in this regard. First of all, I would like to thank our new Finance and Development Committee and their hard work to acquire sponsored funding for this meeting. Thanks to Romi Burks and Jason Locklin for helping to get our corporate sponsors listed in the following page. This funding drive has enabled us to continue to provide the level of student funding and awards we have come to expect from the academy, and I hope this trend can not only continue, but expand in the future. Although I was technically the Program Chair for this meeting, I could not have done it without the amazing assistance from our Coordinator of Information and Technology, Chris Vitek. He has done so much in regards to working with the new software for abstract submission, review, and program development, that he has in reality been the co-Chair for this meeting. ABSTRACT BAYLESS, KEITH MOHR. Phylogenomic Studies of Evolutionary Radiations of Diptera. (Under the direction of Dr. Brian M. Wiegmann.) Efforts to understand the evolutionary history of flies have been obstructed by the lack of resolution in major radiations. Diptera is a highly diverse branch on the tree of life, but this diversity accrued at an uneven pace. Some of radiations that contributed disproportionately to species diversity occurred contemporaneously, and understanding the relationships of these taxa can illuminate broad scale patterns. Relationships between some subordinate groups of taxa are notoriously difficult to untangle, and genomic data will address these problems at a new scale. This project will focus on two major radiations in Diptera: Tabanus horse flies and relatives, and acalyptrate Schizophora. Tabanus includes over one thousand species. Synthesis focused research on the group is stymied by its species richness, worldwide distribution, inconsistent diagnosis, and scale of undescribed diversity. Furthermore, the genus may be non-monophyletic with respect to more than 10 other lineages of horse flies. A groundwork phylogenetic study of worldwide Tabanus is needed to understand the evolution of this lineage and to make comprehensive taxonomic projects manageable. Data to address this question was collected from two different sources. A dataset including five genes was sequenced from ninety-four species in the Tabanus group, including nearly all genera of Tabanini and at least one species from every biogeographic region. Then a new data source from a next generation sequencing approach, Anchored Hybrid Enrichment exome capture, was used to accumulate a dataset including hundreds of genes for a subset of the taxa. -
Neodiptera: New Insights Into the Adult Morphology and Higher Level Phylogeny of Diptera (Insecta)

With 24 figures Neodiptera: New insights into the adult morphology and higher level phylogeny of Diptera (Insecta) VERNER MICHELSEN Department of Entomology, <oological Museum, UniveniQ of Copenhagen, Universitetsparh 15, DK-2100 Copenhagen, Denmark Recehd Decmber 1994, accepted for publication 3ub 1995 This paper outlines several aspects of the skeleto-muscular organization of the adult prothorax and cervix pertaining to the ground pattern of Diptera, which in turn leads to the characterization of Neodiptera, a higher level dipterous taxon which includes Brachycera and bibionomorph Nematocera (smu Hennig). The monophyly of Neodiptera is fdysupported by four skeleto-muscularmodifications of the pronoto-cervical region. The bibionomorph Nematocera are shown to be paraphyletic in terms of Brachycera. On more preliminary evidence it is argued that the fundamental dichotomy of the extant Diptera lies between a ‘polyneuran’ clade which includes Trichoceridae, Tipuloidea, Tanyderidae, and Ptychopteridae and an ‘oligoneuran’ clade which includes all the remaining groups. Preliminary evidence for a sister group relationship between Blephariceroidea and Culicomorpha is also provided.
