The band originates from London and most of the members have a Jewish background. 2 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS When writing the acknowledgements, I cannot help to ponder over the fact that I am so grateful that this work is now completed. The patience the people close to me have showed was unending. And so, the list of people I want to thank is quite extensive. Yet, I especially want to thank Peter Oosterveer, with whom I regularly discussed the content as well as the process I went through working on this thesis. I also want to thank my aunt Elizabeth Saltet. Though, or perhaps because? she must have travelled half Europe these last few months, she somehow had time to have a look at my English to point out the worst mistakes. She told me that my English writing is more Franglais than Dunglish… interesting! The third person I want to sincerely thank, for the inspiring conversations we had and his infinite patience, is my supervisor Henk van Houtum. Obviously, there are many other people who kindly contributed to the, sometimes tough, writing process I have been through. I will thank them personally. I sincerely that everyone who lent a hand will stay around as long as possible; life is a lot more fun with them! Many students see the thesis as something bigger than the final assignment of their scientific education. I am no exception. Like these students I wish that my report will be of use to the world. Generally speaking, world peace is the responsibility of Miss World, and though my goal was a little less high- minded, I still wanted this analysis to contribute to sustainable conflict resolution by the creation of awareness and understanding of the situation for the few people interested in the field of democratisation, identity based conflict and state-minority dynamics in Western Africa. Well… we shall see how useful this paper will turn out to be now it is finished and ready to be published. Fortunately, this thesis has already gloriously succeeded in one thing. I, myself, have learnt a lot from it. Every drop of sweat, every sleepless night, every date with the people I love that I had to cancel, every time that the sun smiled at me through the window, every tear that I dropped on my desktop, and every time I was suddenly happy being alone, analysing something my heart was in... it was so worth it. Yes, the blood, sweat and tears, the energy I put into this report, not always useful to the actual final result, but certainly essential in the ongoing learning process with regard to my way of working... it was worth it. Initially, this thesis was a scientific analysis of the stereotypes that I was left from an early childhood in West Africa. During the process of writing it became more and more a search for a way to combine my intrinsic beliefs with the field of work I am interested in. The bigger lesson I have learnt is both simple and obvious: to find the pearls in your live you just have to work on steadily and stay alert to the possibilities around you. 3 And suddenly, this thesis is finished and therefore my study is completed. And so it is time for something different. With a bit more knowledge of the problem of northern Mali and my way of working, I am looking forward to closing the chapter of my study of Conflicts, Territories and Identities and I am longing for a working live. Many people know France as a nation with exceptional cuisine, famous artists, and breathtaking countrysides. What many are not aware of, on the other hand, is that France has the least proficient English speakers out of any EU country. Received: September 29, 2020; Accepted: March 3, 2021; Published: March 10, 2021 Abstract The language-contact situation in Cameroon, where hundreds of ethnic languages coexist with two official languages and a number of lingua francas, continues to evolve and to produce new usage trends and patterns. One of the outcomes of the dynamism of the linguistic situation in Cameroon is the emergence over the last three decades or so of a new linguistic phenomenon that some researchers have styled “Camfranglais” for the simple reason that it comprises a combination of elements drawn from Cameroon indigenous languages (“cam”), from French (“fran”), and from Pidgin English (“anglai”). What precisely this French acronym refers to in linguistic terms remains fairly controversial as some researchers see in this phenomenon the emergence of a new language while other evidence suggests that ‘Camfranglais’ is certainly a new speech form but not a new language in the strict sense of the term. This paper sets out to review some of the current opinions about Camfranglais with a view to determining if Camfranglais can be considered a language in its own right or simply as a new speech form which can be said to form a continuum with mainstream Cameroon English.

    The MLNA's Fight for a Secular State of Azawad By: Anna Mahjar Barducci* On April 6, 2012, the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA) seceded from Mali unilaterally and declared an independent State of Azawad. The MNLA is a secular Tuareg1 movement whose goal is the establishment of a secular state in Azawad that will respect the rights of all ethnic groups in the region (Tuareg, Moors2, Songhai and Peul). The MLNA has declared itself a partner of the West in the war on terrorism. However, despite its secular and pro-Western character, immediately after the secession the MNLA became the target of a smear campaign by international media,3 which tried to paint it as an Islamist movement. The campaign served the interest of the Malian government and of neighboring countries, which want to delegitimize the MNLA's struggle in order to avoid recognition of the State of Azawad. MLNA Seizes Two Historic Opportunities The MNLA seceded from Mali by taking advantage of two historic opportunities. One was provided by the Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi. Desperately struggling for his survival, Gaddafi armed the Tuareg population in northern Mali, hoping they would help him quell the uprising against him. However, instead of turning their weapons against the Libyan rebels, the Tuaregs used them to take control of their own country. They were assisted by Tuaregs who immigrated to Libya in the 1960s and 1980s in search for a better life and joined the Libyan army, who defected from the tyrant's army and came to the aid of their brothers in Azawad.

INTRODUCTION It is nearly ten years since the concept of lingue immigrate (Bagna et al., 2003), was formulated. To date, immigrant minority languages are poorly investigated in Italy. Actually, when referring to applied linguistics in the Italian context, research tends to focus on Italian language learning and acquisition by immigrants but it does not take into consideration contact situations between Italian and Immigrant languages. The linguistic mapping of these languages (Bagna, Barni, Siebetcheu, 2004; Bagna, Barni, 2005; Bagna; Barni, Vedovelli, 2007) so far undertaken empowers us to consider them as belonging to a linguistic superdiversity in Italy (Barni, Vedovelli 2009). Consequently, rather than being an impediment, immigrant languages shall enrich research in this area of study, without disregarding the complexity at both individual and collective levels. Bagna, Machetti and Vedovelli (2003) distinguish Immigrant languages from Migrant languages. For these authors, unlike Migrant languages which are languages passing through, Immigrant languages are used by immigrant groups that are able to leave their mark on the linguistic contact in the host community. A clear example of such immigrant language is called Camfranglais, an urban variety that stems from a mixture of French, English, Pidgin English and Cameroonian local languages (Ntsobé et al., 2008). On the basis of this backdrop, we present a case study started in 2008 across various Italian cities that focuses on the outcome of the interaction between Italian and Camfranglais.

    C’est pas blesipo : Variations of Verlan Nathaniel Peters Senior Linguistics Thesis Swarthmore College December 15, 2006 Abstract Verlan is a language game that has long existed in France, but became widely-used by youth from the banlieues , the French suburban “ghetto,” in the 1970s. It reverses a Standard French word to produce a new form that acts both as a method of encryption and a marker of identity. Much work has already been done on the phonological operations behind Verlan and on its sociolinguistic setting in modern France. I analyzed the existing literature and four corpora spanning between 1991 and 2001 to determine which Verlan words did not follow the rules of transformation and whether there were any rules or sub-rules underlying these exceptions. I also performed a pilot experiment to determine whether Verlan could be easily learned and successfully learned by two native speakers of French. Both the analysis and the experiment showed that “correct” forms of Verlan do not depend on exactly following the rules of transformation or on other set principles; rather, they depend on knowing which rules the group applies to create specific terms. They also showed that Verlan has become harder to speak “correctly” over time. Today, knowing the tastes and conventions of the group of listeners is just as important as knowing the general rules of transformation, a sign that as Verlan becomes more widespread, its original speakers will create more exceptions and idiosyncrasies to maintain it as a marker for their identity and a method for linguistic concealment. 1 1.0 Background Before investigating Verlan and the game’s restrictions, we must look at the existing research on language games and their usefulness in phonological study, French argot (slang), the 1 I would like to thank first my faculty advisor K.
