TUESDAY 8TH MARCH 2016 MARKET REPORT As spring begins to get into full swing there were similar numbers of stock across all departments. There was another good entry of heifers with some excellent beasts topping 250ppk. There was a good run of heavier steers and another fine entry of Hoggs as good fit pens remain a good trade. 8 steers averaged 176.31ppk and topped at 199.50ppk (£1464) 2 young bulls averaged 160.41ppk and topped at 180.50ppk (£1074) 28 heifers averaged 205.66ppk and topped at 257.50ppk (£1412) 12 OTM cattle topped at 179.50ppk (£1221) 1554 Hoggs averaged 183.31ppk and topped at £113 (220.00ppk) 108 cull ewes averaged £96.77 and topped at £128.00

2 YOUNG BULLS More bulls needed at Malton. The top price per kilo and per head went to an excellent SM Bull from Ventress & Partners of Littlebeck, weighing 595kg and selling for 180.50ppk (£1074) to Cleveland Meat Co. of Stockton on Tees. A lighter Fr bull from JE Clifford & Son of Slingsby, weighing 480kg reached 135.50ppk.

8 STEERS There was an increase in the number of steers on offer this week with a good run of heavier steers forward. The top price per kilo went to a CHX steer from P Raines & Son of Hovingham, weighing 635kg and selling for 199.50ppk (£1267) to JP Mason & Sons of Langton. The top per head went to a heavier BB steer from the same home, weighing 745kg and selling for £1464 (196.50ppk) to JM Douglas of Marishes. 28 HEIFERS Despite slightly fewer Heifers on offer this week there was a good show through the ring. The top price per kilo went to an excellent Lim butchers heifer from GI Marwood of Harome, weighing 460kg and selling for 257.50ppk (£1183) to R Agar of Ilkley. The top price per head went to a BB from the same home, weighing 555kg and selling for £1412 (254.50ppk). Another very good butchers heifer from M Kellett of Great Barugh, weighing 420kg reached 234.50ppk and a BB from R Rose of Scampston topped at 236.50ppk (£1289). A heavier Lim from DR Jackson & Sons of Carnaby, weighing 620kg sold for 220.50ppk to Radford’s Butchers of Sleights. 12 OTM CATTLE A similar number of OTM cattle this Tuesday at Malton with some Hols cows through the ring as well as a former stock bull. The top price per head and per kilo went to a 30 month old BB from D Ulliott of Suffield, weighing 680kg and selling for £1221 (179.50ppk). A 106 month old Lim cow from Marwood Bros of North Grimston, weighing 670kg sold for 131.50ppk. A good 100 month old Hols from RA Smith & Son of reached 100.50ppk and a Hereford, former stock bull from JP & JM Hutchinson of West Ayton, weighing 975kg, sold for 108.50ppk to Cleveland Meat Co of Stockton on Tees.

1554 HOGGS As Hogg numbers continue to rise there was another excellent show with good fit pens remaining a good trade. The top price per kilo went to a pen of 10 from M Ward & Son of Great Habton, weighing 40kg and selling for 220ppk (£88). The top price per head went to an excellent pen of 10 from CF Beal of Yedingham, weighing 64kg and selling for £113.00 to Cleveland Meat Co of Stockton on Tees. There was an excellent run of sheep from J A Cussons of East Heslerton with a pen of 10, weighing 52kg, topping at £95. A pen of 5 from R Lamb & Son of Settrington weighing 40kg topped at 205.00ppk and a pen of 8 from At Athanasius Monastery of Scarborough, weighing 41kg sold for £82. Heavier pens continue to top £100 with a pen of 8 from I Grice of Grimston, weighing 62kg reaching £104, a pen of 5 from TD Ruston of Wintringham reached £111 (185.00ppk) and a pen of 10 from FA Burton & Son of Cottam, weighing 56kg sold for £104.

108 CULL EWES / 4 CULL RAMS There was a strong entry of ewes this week at Malton with a good trade to match. The top price went to a pen of 2 Charollais ewes from D&E Newham of Burniston selling for £128.00 to Yorkshire Halal Meat Supplies. A pen of 8 Texel ewes from S Warriner of Pickering reached £126 and a pen of 7 Suffolk’s from CF Beal of Yedingham sold for £120. The top priced ram was a single Charollais from A Burgess of Muston, topping at £113 to Yorkshire Halal Meat Supplies.

Forest Hall Farm is an exceptional beef & sheep unit farmed in-hand by the Levens Hall Estate. Situated 5 miles north of Kendal on the edge of the Shap Fells, it extends to 4,720 acres of hill and in-bye land and carries 2,400 ewes and a 60 head beef suckler herd.

A farm manager is required, with good farm business, livestock and grassland management experience. Strong inter-personal, leadership and organisational skills are essential. An attractive remuneration package will be offered.
