Yorkshire Water have provided a number you can call free of charge to verify the identity of a doorstep caller claiming to represent them. Simply call 0800 1387878 Remember that all electricity, gas and water companies offer a doorstep password scheme. You create the password and when a representative calls they will give you this unique password to confirm they are legitimate. If you haven't already done so we recommend you contact each to set up a password. Choose passwords that are unique and that you will remember. An email was sent to us by a concerned NHW member. The email relates to the use of a car seat covered by a blanket being left at the side of a road in order to get cars to stop and the driver being attacked. It also warns of eggs being thrown at the 'windshield' of a car. In both cases it offers advice and says to ring 999.The wording of the email is alarming and would cause concern if it were thought to relate to anything happening across our County. We can confirm that this is a further iteration of many such 'Urban Myths' that frequently circulate across the internet and by email. Whilst there may originally have been some ele‐ ments of truth within these they tend to become very much out of proportion and alarmist. The language in the email also confirms that it is based upon American Urban myth and someone has helpfully changed 911 to 999 for a UK twist. Please do not panic or be concerned. There is no evidence of such criminality or gang culture initiations occurring across North ‐ shire. There has been an increase in the number of older people receiving unsolicited telephone calls from a company called SAS Fire & Security or Crime Research UK offering the installa‐ tion of security systems. They often claim to be either: ∙from a company fitting security systems linked to the local police∙ offering 4 houses in the road a free security system .from the National Crime Prevention Unit and giving away 4 free alarms in the area∙ from SAS and working in conjunction with the local police∙ offering moni‐ toring alarm systems with a guaranteed response from the police Whilst the alarms are free or a nominal cost of £1 the ongoing maintenance costs are high and there is a cancellation fee. The company call the local police service and request an incident/log number to give the impression that they are authorised by the police to call. This company is being investigated by Scambusters and North Lanarkshire Trading Standards Services obtained an injunction from Edinburgh County Court under Section 217 of the Enterprise Act 2002. The injunction bans the company from using approval of any authorised body including the Police, Government or Local Authority, or from describing the alarm as 'free' or 'gratis', or engaging in aggressive commercial practice.

This injunction is also enforceable in

FOLKTON AND FLIXTON CRICKET CLUB

The 2010 cricket season ended with our 3rd XI team finishing mid table in the Derwent Valley League, our 2nd XI team being relegated from the Premier Division of the Beckett League and after a late season improvement our 1st XI also finished mid division. There were some superb batting scores from Ben Elvidge and Neil Elvidge. Neil finished the season scoring 1172 runs, the highest of any player in the York League in 2010 with one match score standing at 205. Ben finished the season on 624 runs which included a not out score of 168 when we beat by 1 run in a very high scoring game.

Our Under 15 Juniors gained promotion to Division ‘B’ of the DV Junior League and we introduced an Under 11 team for the first time this season. These youngsters are coached and introduced to quick cricket by our able and qualified Dads, namely David Hutchinson, Micky Walmsley, John Ward and Robert Lacey. If any parent would like more information for 2011 the please contact David Hutchin- son on 01723 862945 who is the new Junior Secretary.

In the evening league the ‘A’ team finished mid table but the ‘B’ team won division ‘D’ and ended up with the only ‘silverware’ for the club. Next season they will play in Division ‘C’ and mention must be made of their captain Jamie Gilmour who led them to victory and in one of the evening league games scored a massive 153 runs.

Once again during the winter months we are continuing playing in the Darts and Domino League for Hunmanby and District. We have a decent number of registered players but are always pleased to welcome anyone wishing to play or as a guest just to enjoy an evening of good humoured banter and keep our pavilion ticking over in the winter months.

The web site for the cricket club, which can be found at www.folktonandflixtoncc.co.uk has not been kept as up to date as we would wish. It will improve as time allows but keep checking periodically and hopefully you will find something of interest.

As many readers of this report will know another of our life members and in fact a founder member Jim Phillips died in March. He is sadly missed by all at the club.

Unfortunately we have had a spate of malicious theft and damage to our cricket pavilion since the end of the season. It saddens club members that a few mindless individuals seem to take pleasure in wrecking things that the rest of us work hard to look after. We have had the lead taken from the roof of the pavilion which has caused a lot of damage. The village hall also suffered the same fate. Our scoreboard door has been vandalised twice and young trees damaged, plus setting fire to an old BBQ pushed up against the rear wall of the pavilion. The whole place could have been on fire with grave consequences. All of this damage costs a lot of money to put right and like everyone these days money is hard to come by. If anyone knows who the culprits are please try and talk some sense into them to respect other people’s property.

We are always open to new players and welcome anyone, whatever age group or ability to our club. Also anyone who would like to become part of cricket on the administration side would be welcomed with open arms. If you are interested, or know of anyone who would be interested, in playing cricket or helping then please contact the secretary, Mrs Pat Baker 01723 862903.

JUNE REPORTS FROM BOROUGH/COUNTY COUNCILLORS. 95/10 Councillor J Blackburn said he had little to report except that he had succeeded in having the picnic bench removed from the lay bye at the approach to the villages. 96/10 Some outstanding work will be carried out, such as the pathway and kerbs, between Manor Farm and Councillor Creswell’s house. He could not give a specific date for the start of these projects but they are on NYCC agenda. 97/10 Cayton Carrs will be closed for a short period of time while the bridge has its periodic repair. 98/10 A discussion arose regarding the intended building of 170 houses in Cayton and the vehi- cles from this development travelling along Cayton Carrs through Folkton and Flixton to reach the A64 and other points south. Councillor Blackburn informed all present that if anyone wished to see the planning application this information was on SBC web site. NYCC has no intention, at the present time to improve the Cayton Carr road to alleviate this possible problem. 99/10 The Clerk was asked to write to SBC regarding the Parish Councils concerns. Resolved PLANNING. Mr and Mrs Hunter of HolmLea, Main Street, Flixton were granted full planning permission with the proviso that the extension would use materials that reflect the existing Grade 2 listed building. Correspondence 100/10 It was agreed that the subscription for membership of RAY should be paid. Resolved. 101/10 The Office of National Statistics intends to carry out a small census within the area check- ing addresses and post codes. It will run for about 16 weeks. They may knock on a few doors and ask questions: they will not enter premises and will carry ID cards. The full Census takes place in 2011. 102/10 Councillor’s J Carroll and L Thompson will attend the Southern Area Committee Meeting on the 10th June at 7pm in St George’s Church Hall, Moor Lane, Eastfield. Pamphlets have been placed in the notice boards and it is recommended that as many of our residents as possible attend as this will affect our Parish. Resolved. 103/10 Councillor T Creswell took home the Local Transport Consultation questionnaire to com- plete. Resolved. 104/10 A copy of SBC Committee meeting dates are to be submitted to Councillor L Thompson. Resolved. 105/10 Councillors L Thompson and J Carroll will attend the joint meeting of the three levels of Councils. Resolved. 106/10 Councillor L Thompson asked if it was known who had been spraying down North Street and if the weed killer used was legal or dangerous to animals. It was of the general opinion that the substance used would be safe regarding animals and would only be a proprietary brand. Resolved. JULY REPORTS FROM BOROUGH/COUNTY COUNCILLORS. 109/10 Councillor Blackburn stated that the matter regarding the right of way has moved on con- siderably since his last report and now stands at the top of the list. The report should be presented on the 16th September 2010. 110/10 Councillor Blackburn did say that most of the work in Flixton will be carried out as follows:- Folkton brow will be resurfaced at the back end of the year and repairs to the footpath outside of Marigold Cottage and the bridge over Cayton Carrs should be completed this autumn; but, due to drastic cut backs by the Government, the drop kerbs in Flixton will not be carried out in the foresee- able future. 111/10 Councillor Harvey that a bus service between Bridlington and was not being sup- ported by SBC but he will continue to fight for it. 111/10 The swimming for juniors and seniors at Filey school swimming baths was doing excep- tionally well with approximately 50 people attending per week, this will continue with no charge until September 2010. 112/10 Councillor Harvey brought to the attendance of all at the meeting that the Scarborough to Leeds railway line will be closed in September to carry out major work on the line and the powers that be will attempt to have a bus service in place to alleviate traveller’s problems/concerns. He is working closely with Councillor Allanson on this mat- ter. 113/10 One other matter he mentioned was that he was trying to have the mileage payments to Councillors and staff reduced to 40p per mile. PLANNING. NONE Correspondence 114/10 The agenda for Highways Work for 2010/2011 was read but no major work will be carried out in Folkton Parish area. Resolved. 115/10 The Local Development Framework – Housing Allocations Development Plan was inspected and although one area of land was resubmitted it was generally thought that at the present time this will not affect our area. 116/10 A Southern Area Committee meeting will be held at 7.00 pm Thursday 8th July in Muston Village Hall. The agenda was passed to Councillors L Thompson and J Carroll who are our representatives. Resolved. 117/10 The Council was asked if planting of trees was allowed in the cemetery. The matter was discussed and no objections were raised but the type of tree must be specified. Resolved. 117/10 The number of signs on roadway verges at and near to the burger van close to Folkton appears to be getting out of hand and the grass, on the approach to Staxton roundabout is so high it is becoming a matter of concern to motorists. Councillor Black- burn would look into the matter. 118/10 The O’Rourke company, presently carrying out work in the area, said they would improve the signs approaching Flixton from Staxton roundabout and the Village in Bloom Group would plant flower around them. Resolved. SEPTEMBER PC Davis 123/10 An excellent report was given by this officer on the problems within our area. He pointed out that diesel stocks should be securely locked away and vehicles, if possible, placed in an area that can be observed at all times. 124/10 The majority of the major crimes committed lately are due to criminals entering from out- side this locality and they are very well organised. 125/10 The number of crimes has risen over the last four months but the figures on the Police Report do include the camp sites at Primrose Valley and Reighton. 126/10 The police are continuing to make a concerted effort and the speed camera division is having a marked effect in this area. Help from the public is always appreciated and information may be submitted without the name of the person reporting the offence being disclosed. 127/10 Councillor Blackburn said the following work will be carried out in the near future: The drain will be cleared and a new manhole cover re-placed in the road outside Marigold Cottage, the path outside of Mrs Bowers house will be repaired, repairs will shortly be carried out on the bridge at Cayton Carrs (Autumn) and the burger van has agreed to move his sign and he will also cut the grass in the vicinity of the van at the entrance to Folkton/Flixton. 28/10 NYCC will write to Mr N Rowntree regarding the state of the path outside his house in Flixton and hopefully resolve this problem. 129/10 The land in Dean Road has been sold to the Company who submitted the highest bid. This has now been reported to be TESCO. Planning permission must be submitted and passed prior to the store being built.

PLANNING. Applicant: Mr S Wells Address: Granary Farm, Main Street, Folkton Application: Erection of agricultural building for free range hens.

This was discussed by Folkton Parish Council and all Councillors present objected to the scheme. There does not appear to be any substantive change between this application and the previous one; except for a reduction in size of the building housing the hens. The Clerk was asked to submit the same objections that were put forward for the previous application. Correspondence 130/10 The Modification of the Definitive Map for the Forden Road has had a slight set back and information on its use prior to 1802 must be produced. Hopefully Church archives will produce this evidence. A meeting in the Village Hall on Friday 8th of October will be held to discuss this matter. The time of this meeting has not yet been set.

131/10 The letter of thanks from the F & F Bloom Group was read out. Resolved. 132/10 A meeting of the F & F Bloom Group will be held in the Foxhound Inn on the 21st Septem- ber at 1930 hrs. Resolved. 133/10 The soil improver give away notice has been placed in the notice board in North Street. Resolved

134/10 Councillor Blackburn will investigate the moving of the signs relating to the unsuitability of the road from Folkton to Cayton for caravans and if possible have them relocated. Resolved.

135/10 The Clerk will inform the Police concerning the graffiti on signs at the entrance to Flixton near Staxton roundabout. Resolved. FINANCE The bank statement was read out. The Clerk was asked to resubmit the proposition appertaining to a holiday for one year of the pre- cept this will enable Councillors to discuss this matter. This will be placed on the agenda next month

HERE ARE THE JUDGES COMMENTS FOR THIS YEAR’S YinB. Category 1B Name of entry - Flixton and Folkton Judges - Denise Wherrett and Nigel Harrison Date of Judging - 21st July, 2010 Introduction The judges were greatly impressed with the passion and enthusiasm of the in bloom group for both villages who clearly work together as one team. The improvements to the wildlife areas have greatly enhanced its beauty and tr anquillity within the local environment. The Humble Bee Camping and Caravan Park was a real find and contributes to both floral and wildlife in the area. SECTION A - Horticultural Achievement Areas of Achievement: Humble Bee Camping and Caravanning Park a real rural treasure. Local pub had some good colourful displays as did Orchard Lodge. The themed permanent planting displays worked and looked well. Areas for Improvement: • A reminder to the In Bloom Group to ensure more bulbs and tress are planted this coming autumn as promised. SECTION B - Environmental Responsibility Areas of Achievement: Incorporating the sponsored wooden posts at the entrance to the wildlife area greatly enhances the entrance and stops traffic damaging the verges. No litter, graffiti or signs of dog fouling. Seats for picnics etc., in the wildlife area - a great idea. Areas for Improvement:  Another reminder to put up the information boards in the wildlife areas in time for the  spring judging for 2011 SECTION C - Community Participation Areas of Achievement; A very pro-active In Bloom Group whose all year round activities raise funds to keep the village looking good. Very supportive local sponsors. © Excellent signage promoting Yorkshire in Bloom Areas for improvement:  A reminder to involve the younger members of the community in the autumn bulb and  tree planting projects and to see evidence of this in the spring 2011 portfolio. Spring Medal Position - Silver Summer Medal Position - Silver Gilt Medal Awarded - Silver Gift Flixton and Folkton Bloom Group

We are very pleased with our result of this years YinB competition and thank everyone for the support and sponsorship we have received. We would also like to say a special thank you to Laing O’Rourke for building the flower bed around the Flixton sign at the Staxton end of the Village also to MKM who generously provided the bricks for the wall around the sign and also our thanks to Mr. Slightholme and Murray Brown for donating the soil. It is truly a community effort. We will plant the bed up as soon as we can. If we are every to improve on our Silver Gilt we need to involve young people in our projects we are very conscious of the restraints around this especially when working with very young children and the difficulties families have of finding time to get involved. Sometime in October we are hoping to plant some more spring bulbs in both villages , it will be either a Saturday or Sunday. We will put posters in the noticeboards when we are going to do this, if anyone could give a hand it would really be appreciated and would give the judges what they want. We are also entering our main fund raising time the posters in this magazine will give you the infor- mation for the events. Thinking ahead in the Spring we will hold a plant sale again. If you are thinking of taking cuttings or splitting up perennial plants we would appreciate any that you don’t need so that we can sell them. FLIXTON AND FOLKTON BLOOM GROUP PRESENT

Services for the coming months are in the Church magazine or in the Church noticeboard in the Church grounds.

The second Sea Sunday Service that was held at St.John’s was enjoyed by all who attended. The Filey Fishermen were in fine voice again both in Church and afterwards at the Village Hall. A very enjoyable buffet tea provided by Mrs. Jill Carroll. A collection of £98.50 was taken and later a Donation for that amount was sent to The Mission for Seafarers.

The ‘Back to Church Sunday’ on the 26th.September doesn’t seem to appeal to people so perhaps we need to get our thinking caps on for this service next year.

The main service in October will be the Harvest Festival Service which is on 8th.October information on poster opposite.
