Jack V. Haney. An Introduction to the Russian Folktale. Armonk, NY and London: M. E. Sharpe, 1999. viii, 135 pp. $40.00 (cloth); $18.95 (paper). An Anthology of Russian Folk Epics. Edited by James Bailey and Tatiana Ivanova. Armonk, NY and London: M. E. Sharpe, 1998. 464 pp. $69.95 (cloth); $29.95 (pa- per). Jack Haney's Introduction to the Russian Folktale is the first volume of an ambi- tious project to translate anew Aleksandr Afans'ev's Russkie narodnye skazki. To help the North American reader cross over into the world of the Russian tale, it discusses the collecting and publication of Russian tales, performers and performance, tale con- tent, and the probable mythic and ritual basis of tales. Haney performs an especially valuable service by concentrating on the Russian perspective on this genre. Folktales are ubiquitous and one of the richest and most varied narrative types. They can be, and have been, approached in many ways. The Russian approach is probably the least familiar to the North American reader and the one most in need of explication. Folktales tend to be associated with the past, either the historical past or the past of an individual, namely childhood. In the West, Bruno Bettelheim's Uses of Enchant- ment and the works of Marie von Franz have encouraged us to look at tales in the con- text of human development, to see parallels between the psychological growth of the child and the adventures of tale heroes. More recently, Jack Zipes and Marina Wamer have drawn our attention to the political dimension of tales, the messages beneath the surface and even the commercial intent behind the folktale versions produced in film studios.

  • Herald for APRIL 2008 Copy.Indd Alan.Indd
Saint Sophia HERALD Volume 13 Number 4 Many Lives...One Heart April 2008 From Warehouse to Cathedral Easter 2008 It was a few minutes before midnight on April 13, 1908. The rented warehouse at 240 Anderson Ave here in Los Angeles was pitch dark. Greek immigrants from throughout Southern California and beyond waited in huddled anticipation. Their Sunday best attire newly cleaned and pressed smelled of orange and lemon colognes, a reminder of the old country’s festive scents. It was so far away from their “horio”, their villages. Far away were parents and families. A world apart. Yet for those few minutes the sights and sounds were familiar and embracing. Behind a curtain at a makeshift altar the visiting priest proclaimed “Defte lavete fos”…Come receive the light. Slowly from his candle, the small warehouse was brightly lit, candle by candle, person to person. The incredible joy of Easter was upon them. It was 100 years ago that the parents and grandparents of a number of you who are reading these words, celebrated Pascha and joyously proclaimed Christos Anesti. We can only imagine what they were thinking of and hoping for on that Easter Sunday, as they embraced and greeted each other. One thing is for sure. The church was in their heart. Christ lived in their simplicity, in their broken halting English, and in their humble homes and struggling businesses and jobs. The light of Easter that year moved them to sign the official Charter establishing the Greek Orthodox Community of Los Angeles. That same unfading light inspired them to build in four short years their church on San Julian Street.

  • 2011 Annual Report from the President and Chair
2011 ANNUAL REPORT FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CHAIR 2012 marks the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Buzzards Bay Coalition by a dedicated group of citizens spanning the Bay from Woods Hole to Westport. They were brought together by the loss of shellfish beds to contamination from sewage, by the ongoing threat of oil spills from barges, by toxic pollution in need of cleanup in New Bedford and at Otis, and by the spread of sprawl development and loss of open space throughout the watershed. In 1987, these problems were reaching an all-time peak and the Bay’s citizens came together to create a new future for our region’s environment. They believed that local citizens from all watershed towns should work together; for they had the most to gain from the Bay’s preservation and the most to lose by its degra- dation. They created the Buzzards Bay Coalition to carry forth that mission. So a sign was hung on a donated cadets room at Mass Maritime, a phone line estab- lished, and from the keys of a typewriter, the Bay Coalition began its work to build a citizens movement to clean up the Bay. The accomplishments in this 2011 Annual Report speak volumes about how far we’ve come as an organization and how the challenges facing our Bay have changed in the past quarter century. But one thing that remains as true today as it was in 1987 is that people are the engine of the Buzzards Bay Coalition. Our members and generous sup- porters who volunteer their time, money, and ideas are at the heart of our efforts and make our work possible.

  • Missionary Sisters of Saint Charles Borromeo - Scalabrinians
In this first volume of the history of the Missionary Sisters of Saint Charles – Scalabrinians that covers the period of 1895 – 1934, Sister Lice Maria Signor dedicates herself patiently in giving an attractive and documented form, the historical path of the MSCS Congregation and does it under diverse aspects: social, economic, political, cultural, ecclesial and religious. It is evidenced her determination in looking at the elements to construct our history and to show how the existence of the MSCS Sisters Congregation, is a historic/missionary path of evangelic service to the migrants, that become the incarnation of the words of Jesus Christ: “I was a stranger and you welcomed me” (Mt. 25,35). “Seeds emigrate on the wings of the wind, plants emigrate from continent to continent, carried by the water currents, birds and animals emigrate, but more than all, man emigrates, now in a collective form, now in an isolated form but always an instrument of that Providence that presides over the destiny of humans and guides them, also by catastrophes, for the final goal, that of perfectioning man over the land and the glory of God in the heavens” (Scalabrini).
