Spiritual refreshment, and great views, on Aberdeen pilgrimage

BISHOP HUGH GILBERT offers great insight into the Aberdeen Diocesan Pilgrimage to Fatima, Salamanca and Avila

IN 2012, Lourdes had been the destination of the Aberdeen Diocesan pilgrimage. In 2013 it was the turn of Rome. This year some 30 doughty pilgrims made their way to the Iberian Peninsula. They came from both the Inverness and Aberdeen ends of the diocese, and were accompanied on the October 11-18 journey by Deacon John Wire, the Chancellor of the Diocese, by the Vicar General Fr Stuart Chalmers, and by myself, Bishop Hugh Gilbert. Our first port of call was Fatima. There, of course, our Lady appeared in 1917 to the three children, Jacinta and Francisco Martos and Lucia dos Santos. Our visit coincided with the anniversary of the final apparition on October 13. The event was marked by a concelebrated Mass presided over by the Archbishop of Goa. Though the temperature dropped and rain fell in unusual torrents, soaking clothes and shoes and threatening candles, spirits largely remained un-dampened. The austere holiness of the place and the local helpfulness were sensed by all. LETTER OF THE WEEK Biggest threat to family is lack of interest in marriage

SYNOD fathers take note, the final 2014 document is written but a great deal can still happen in the year until the World Synod. The biggest threat to the family today is not divorce or same-sex relationships. It is not actually remarriage either—and, in my opinion the Church really does need to recognise this. No, the biggest threat to marriage in our time is the limbo-like state of cohabitation, when people commit to being together for the duration of heady, romantic love with an easy out when times get tough. This leads to arrested development in couples and families. How sad that true, supportive love that last a lifetime—and families that stick together—are deemed old fashioned. I believe that some of our young people actually struggle to commit to marriage —knowing that the Sacrament of marriage is designed to last a lifetime and distracted by a world of other choices. But in our wider society there are also people who sadly, have not been set a good example by there own parents of a lifelong commitment to marriage and supporting the family. As Catholics, we need to do our best to uphold Church teaching and our own values on marriage. In doing so we do not set ourselves above anyone else, we simply set a much-needed example as we strive to honour God’s law. It takes work, and sadly does not work out for everyone. While I am on the subject, my heart Much can be learned from the end of Mass we are told to leave and bleeds for divorced and remarried others bearing witness spread the Word. One way of doing this, is Catholics. JOE McGRATH’S WAY OF THE CROSS PART TEN

HE tenth station on the Way of the Cross concerns Jesus being stripped of his garments before He is crucified. Considering the treatment that Jesus experiences on this journey, this might seem to be almost trivial in comparison. In our society people go off to Spanish beaches and strip Tat will. What is the significance of this station? Obviously Jewish society in Jesus’ time would not have shared our permissive attitudes. To strip someone in public would be to shame them, to remove their dignity. I suspect most of us would feel the same despite the permissive society we live in. Clothes are very important to people. Your clothes don’t just guard your modesty; they make a statement about you. Your clothes can say something about your status in society. Their messages can be confusing at times. We had a conversation about a dress code for Eucharistic ministers at a recent parish committee meeting. Is it permissible to wear jeans on the altar? I noted that my ‘respectable’ trousers from the outlet shop cost much less than the expensive jeans worn by many young—and not so young—people. Who is being more respectful? Our weekly series on Children’s Liturgy has lesson plans and activity suggestions for use with young people who are on the path to Christ Each week, Catechists will find readings and Psalm responses, complemented by prayer, reflection, FAITH discussion questions, and activities. Please feel free to use them as you wish The lessons are created by Adorer-theologians using the lens of the spirituality of St Maria de Mattias, which also embraces precious blood spirituality FIRST While this is the starting point for the lessons, readers are invited to approach them however the spirit moves you The Church is concerned with the availability and understanding of scripture for children who have their rightful place in the Church. In light of this SCO aims to provide a useful tool in drawing children closer to KIDS the Catholic Faith

Canon Michael Ryan was joined by his friends and SPOTLIGHT ON family, and the parishioner of his current parish of St Bride’s in East Kilbride as he celebrated his 80th birthday. Canon Ryan, a native of Sligo, has served in the Motherwell Diocese for over 50 years, and in his time in the parishes around the diocese has won many great friends thanks to his dedication and hard work in his priestly ministry. Having been ordained in Thurles, County Tipperary, in 1959 he was shortly afterwards transferred to Scotland where he began to make his first connection with the people of East Kilbride. After beginning his work with them in those early days it was to be in 1989, on his return to the parish, that he made his greatest impact on the area. Beginning new projects, such as Renew and Faith Friends, he revitalised the parish and refreshed he connection of many with their Faith, and build a relationship with his parishioners which endures to this day. Although he is now retired, he still serves the parish and diocese he came to when he sailed up the Clyde in 1959, with his fellow Irish priest Fr Michael McNamee, and in recognition and in honour of his ministry his 80th birthday celebrations were marked with a thanksgiving Mass. After Mass the happy congregation retired to the St Bride’s Pastoral Centre where a reception arranged by the ladies of the parish kept the celebratory mood in full swing. HE two councils that followed the First Lateran, rather unimaginatively named Second and Third Lateran, took place within a short time-frame—1139 and 1179—and were both concerned with four aspects: Papal schisms, reform, heresy and crusading. They effectively summed-up the Tpreoccupations of the High Medieval Church, and put our notion of that particular Church as the summit of Catholicism into sharp question. Divisions, schisms, heresies, scandals and mediocrity were as much part of the great Reform Movement Church as it was of the Church of any other time. This makes these two councils of great interest. Let us have a look at how this period is frequently perceived by those influenced by the Romantic Movement. In the English-speaking world, the most profound influence of the Romantic view of the Middle Ages came from the Gothic Revival. This Victorian movement looked back to the Middle Ages for inspiration in all sort of fields, including architecture (the Houses of Parliament in London), literature (Dracula, Frankenstein, much of the oeuvre of Walter Scott), painting (the Pre-Raphaelites) and design (the Arts and Craft Movement). Two elements bound this medievalism together: an aesthetic longing for the forms of the late Middle Ages and a religious longing for the Faith of the High MiddleAges. The latter was most immediately expressed inAnglicanism, in the Oxford Movement, and in Catholicism in Chateaubriand’s Génie du christianisme. This oversimplifies matters greatly, and there were deep political and economic impulses at work as well, but the reader, considering the immense list of profound and still active influences listed above, will easily understand just how deep the notion of the perfect Middle Ages ran and runs. At first glance, there is much to recommend the idea. This was an age in which art was deeply shaped by Faith, in which political society at least acknowledged the precepts of Christianity, an age that saw the influence of the Church and the Papacy rise to a height that it would not reach again. However, this idealised picture masks a much more complex set of realities, not in the least that many Christians living in this period believed it was an age of decay, and that the Church required continuous efforts at reform.
