Church of Our Lady of Good Counsel - St. Thomas More August 05, 2018 Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Theme/Call To Worship Jesus is the true bread from heaven sent down by God to feed us for eternal life. Introduction To The Word Exodus 16:2-4, 12-15: Today’s first reading takes place in the early stages of Israel’s journey through the desert when the tension and panic were so high that talk of a “famine” resounded among the Israelites. God intervened on Moses’ behalf, assuring Moses he would “rain down bread from heaven” not only to feed his people but also to “test” the Israelites. The divine action of sending bread from heaven became an important defining moment in Israel’s sacred story and cultic identity. Ephesians 4:17, 20-24: In the second reading from Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians, Paul urged the Ephesians to “be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and put on the new self, created in God’s way in righteousness and holiness of truth.” John 6:24-35: In today’s Gospel Jesus teaches three important points. First, focus on the food that feeds you for “eternal life.” Second, our role in the “work of God” is simply to “believe in the one he sent.” The crowds’ request for a sign from Jesus leads to his third and most important point: the very same God who originally sent bread from heaven through Moses to the Israelites in the desert now sends “bread ... from heaven” that “gives life to the world.” Adapted from Liturgical Publications Inc, Connect! In this first volume of the history of the Missionary Sisters of Saint Charles – Scalabrinians that covers the period of 1895 – 1934, Sister Lice Maria Signor dedicates herself patiently in giving an attractive and documented form, the historical path of the MSCS Congregation and does it under diverse aspects: social, economic, political, cultural, ecclesial and religious. It is evidenced her determination in looking at the elements to construct our history and to show how the existence of the MSCS Sisters Congregation, is a historic/missionary path of evangelic service to the migrants, that become the incarnation of the words of Jesus Christ: “I was a stranger and you welcomed me” (Mt. 25,35). “Seeds emigrate on the wings of the wind, plants emigrate from continent to continent, carried by the water currents, birds and animals emigrate, but more than all, man emigrates, now in a collective form, now in an isolated form but always an instrument of that Providence that presides over the destiny of humans and guides them, also by catastrophes, for the final goal, that of perfectioning man over the land and the glory of God in the heavens” (Scalabrini). The city of São Paulo took in many new inhabitants in the final years of the 19th century. They came from various ethnic backgrounds, but mainly from the Italian Peninsula. The peaceful city became a metropolis and its factories attracted unemployed people from the state's countryside. Since many families caught diseases and did not withstand the long trips, their children became orphans.
