They are representative of a path to spiritual self awareness and unveil the different stages of life as we move thorough our path. They all hold very deep meaningful lessons. Jay French Presents...The Archangel Series © Raphael The Breath of God Above all, Raphael’s legends paint a picture of a healer. Often represented with the “Golden Vial of Balm”, and a pilgrim’s staff, Raphael has an apparent charge to heal the Earth. He was the angel who healed Abraham’s pain of circumcision, cured Jacob’s thigh after being wrestled by Samael, and gave the medical book, “The Book of the Angel Raziel” to Noah. Raphael also provided Solomon with a magic ring, the Pentalpha, in order to build his temple. He is one of the Princes of the Presence, healing, joy, miracles, grace, patron of travellers, and ruler of the 2nd Heaven. According to my research (which although it was vast, is not foolproof), here are the translations of what I believe to be the Hebrew words on the seal: ΡΑΠΗΑΕΛ RAPHAEL Means: “God has Healed” ΑΓΙΟΣ AGIOS A name of God The Signature of Archangel Raphael name of the Α∆ΟΝΑΨ ADONAY “The Lord” Wednesday 2nd Heaven ΟΤΗΕΟΣ OTHEOS A name of God Raquie About The Series Based on a combination of Christian, Judaic & Islamic legends & history, I was inspired to render these mysterious creatures in their more mysterious and dramatic light. All too often angels are depicted as “cute” or “docile”, and I wanted a view of the warriors, the secret-keepers, the guides and messengers. Of course, this does fall under my basic love of archetypes, but my methodology reflected my thoughts to some degree, in that I wanted to capture the timeless conundrum of the angel concept. -

CHAPTER 4 Revisiting Hell’s Angels in the Quran Christian Lange According to the K. al-Aghānī (“Book of Songs”) of Abū l-Faraj al-Iṣfahānī (d. 356/967), the wine-loving poet Ādam b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz gained the per- sonal favour of the caliph al-Mahdī (r. 158–69/775–85) after repenting for the debaucheries of his youth. Among the more irreverent of his verses is the following: isqinī yā Muʿāwiyah … sabʿatan aw thamāniyah isqinīhā wa-ghanninī … qabla akhdhi l-zabāniyah Give me to drink, oh Muʿāwiya … seven or eight [cups]! Give them to me to drink, and sing for me … before the zabāniya take [me]!1 Ādam pictured the zabāniya as duplicates of the angel of death who, according to the Quran (4:97, 32:11), seizes the souls of sinners when they die and inter- rogates them about their wrongdoings. This is also how later tradition pictured them: as black creatures who appear at the moment of death to pull people’s souls out of their bodies and drag them into hell, where they torture them.2 However, the identity of the zabāniya, who are mentioned only once in the Quran (96:18), came to be established only gradually over the course of the early centuries of Islam. While Ibn ʿAbbās (d. 68/687–8) is said to have held the view that the zabāniya are the punishers in hell,3 his contemporary ʿAbdallāh b. Abī l-Hudhayl thought that the zabāniya had their feet on the 1 Ādam b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz was an offspring of the Umayyad family, who survived the purge of the ʿAbbāsid revolution. -

JOURNAL OF JUNGIAN THEORY AND PRACTICE VOL. 7 NO. 1 2005 The Union of Opposites in the Kabbalah Gustav Dreifuss Abstract The union of opposites in the Kabbalah (the Tree of Life) and in alchemy is discussed. The kabbalistic tree of life represents the dynamic aspect of the divine being and, psychologically, of the Self. The symbolic, archetypal aspect of sexual- ity is shown as a mysterium coniunctionis. The Song of Songs, the biblical erotic poem, is added as an amplification of the masculine-feminine union. Keywords Kabbalah, Sephiroth, alchemy, coniunctio. Whereas Christian culture elaborated the idea of the union of opposites with- in the framework of alchemy, the Kabbalah formulated its ideas within the system of the Sephiroth, which Jung (1963a) defined as “a highly differentiated coniunctio symbol” (para. 652). The union takes place within the Tree of Life. It represents divine powers with branches made up of the ten Sephiroth, which could be defined as non-figurative archetypal constellations. They can be seen as stages, aspects, attributes, hypostases, principles, emanations, names, lights, and powers (energies). Modern individuals have trouble accepting the existence of a reality that cannot be formulated in rational terms. The urge to know where we come from and where we are going to is the basis of human development. Lurking in this desire to know is hubris—the belief that, in time, we will surely find the answers to the secrets of creation. In hubris, human beings lose the numinous sense of a reality that exists beyond intellectual knowledge. The Tree of Life represents this dynamic aspect of the divine being or, in psychological terms, the Self. -

More D often than not, despite all protestations to the contrary, there certainly is. So it is with me. In having been asked to write an introduction to this new edition of The Tree of Life, I feel a warm inner glow which combines a number of quite separate emotions. This book has special meaning for me that none of my other writing ever had. Primarily, there is the basic fact that it was the first book that emerged from my burgeoning spirit. A Garden of Pomegranates, a prior publication, simply expanded itself from a set of Qabalistic notes I had kept for several years-and that is all it ever was.
